The Implications of the Federal High Court Judgement Stopping CBN from Remitting Monthly Allocations to Rivers State 30-10-2024 As a keen observer and advocate of developmental politics, I am compelled to reflect over the recent Federal High Court judgement halting the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) from remitting monthly allocations to Rivers State. This decision has far-reaching implications that could plunge the region back into turmoil, and it is the people whom I call the grass who will inevitably suffer the consequences. Political events in Rivers State have taken a troubling turn, reminiscent of the volatile years of militancy in the Niger Delta. During my visits to Port Harcourt, the state capital, I witnessed firsthand the pervasive atmosphere of insecurity. Navigating the city involved passing through multiple checkpoints, enduring thorough searches, and often trekking long distances as transporters avoided certain areas out of fear for their safety. The sight of nearly 200 helicopters taking off and landing daily was a stark reminder of the insecurity that plagued the region, as expatriates preferred aerial travel over the risk of kidnappings on the streets below. The sacrifices made by security agencies during those tumultuous years cannot be overstated. Countless lives were lost defending oil facilities and personnel from the clutches of militant groups. To this day, the Nigerian government spends billions securing pipelines in the Niger Delta, a cost that underscores the region's importance to the national economy. The Federal Government must not forget these sacrifices or the historical context that shapes the current political landscape. Let us not overlook the substantial investments made in the presidential amnesty programme, which aimed to rehabilitate and reintegrate repentant militants. The resources allocated for training, feeding, and caring for these individuals were significant, as were the billions spent on disarming them. The consequences of neglecting the needs and aspirations of the Niger Delta were clear: a nosedive in national revenue and a resurgence of violence disguised as a fight for freedom. It is imperative that the Federal Government prioritises the peace of the region over the interests of any individual, no matter their political clout. The administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu must exercise caution to ensure that the actions of a few do not jeopardise the stability of a region that has long been a cornerstone of Nigeria's economy. The world is watching as we strive to fulfil our role as a leading nation in Africa, and we cannot afford to allow selfish interests to overshadow the collective good. The people of Rivers State have no alternative chief executive; we are bound by the same constitution that governs our nation. When the youth, who work in various ministries and parastatals, contemplate a future where their salaries are uncertain, we risk igniting a sense of restiveness that could further destabilise the region. The potential for unrest is a reality we must confront, and it is in the hands of the President to act decisively. Moreover, the judiciary's actions must be scrutinised. Allegations of the procurement of dubious court judgements and injunctions pose a grave threat to our democracy. This trend is a pathway to chaos that we cannot afford to traverse. The President must think critically and act constitutionally to restore order and uphold the rule of law. As we reflect on these challenges, I am reminded of the words of Martin Luther King Jr.: "Peace is not merely a distant goal that we seek, but a means by which we arrive at that goal." In this light, it is crucial that we pursue peace through dialogue and understanding rather than allowing conflict to dictate our future. conclusively, I urge the Federal Government to consider the broader implications of its decisions on Rivers State and the Niger Delta as a whole. The stakes are high, and the consequences of inaction could be dire. Let us remember that "peace is cheaper than war," and it is our collective responsibility to ensure that we do not allow history to repeat itself. Fanisi Babatunde, PhD, a Researcher and Development Analyst writes from North Central Nigeria. It is time to act for the sake of our people and the future of our nation. |

You will get cheap Nigerian Foods and get to see Our Nigerian Brothers in Thousands.you will really need to be careful with them. They don't have jobs so some can be Criminally Minded. You will get to see private taxi operators. Private Cab is somehow an Haram in Dubai so Most of the Cabs are clean Government owned Cabs. At a fee Metro is cheaper... You buy a One off ticket and cruise for the whole day. Watch out for shopping deals.. Many of the Malls does Awuff around 10am in the Morning particularly Alguair Mall on Almakthoum super high way.
