Yes, Wondychiqe STEM is good for your husband, but the last time the government specifically selected STEM in Express Entry was in 2024. Since then, STEM draws have only been held a few times since Express Entry began in 2015... I think like 3 times so that's a bad gamble

Medical Laboratory Technician
Clinical Laboratory Science / Medical Laboratory Science

and then secures a job in that field after graduation, it may provide a more consistent pathway.

My husband is 40+, studied mechanical Engineering, has PGD also, COREN too and works in Facility management. A relatively good job paying in 6 figures.

I am 30+, studied Biochemistry, have an MSC too. I am a senior Govt worker. My income is okay and I have a little business bringing in some income too.
We have children with the youngest being a year plus.
We want to try this study visa, who should go and have better opportunities in CA for relocation/PR.

PPR - Passport Request. PPR is not the same as PR. This request is typically made by IRCC to issue a visa.

The reality is simple: graduating from a Canadian institution does not automatically lead to PR. Many graduates today are struggling with low CRS scores, expiring permits, and uncertain immigration pathways.

I am a recent Geography graduate from the University of Ibadan (Second Class Upper) and I just completed my NYSC at the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) in Ibadan. I am currently targeting a funded thesis-based master's degree in Canada for Fall 2027, specifically in the area of environmental governance and sustainable development.

I have already identified some programs and schools I am interested in, including McGill University, University of Waterloo, Western University, Queen's University, and University of Ottawa. I am also currently applying for the McCall MacBain Scholarship at McGill.

I would love to hear from anyone who has gone through the Canadian graduate school process, especially:

1. How did you find and secure a supervisor? Did you cold email professors and did it work?
2. How long did your study permit take to process as a Nigerian applicant?
3. Any tips on writing a strong statement of purpose or personal statement?
4. Is there anything you wish you had known before applying or arriving in Canada?
5. Any experience with the McCall MacBain Scholarship specifically?

Many schools are already facing financial pressure, and some programs have been reduced or closed because of lower international student enrollment. The education sector also supports many jobs, so international students continue to play an important role in the economy.
How students plan to obtain PR after graduation is a separate issue. If someone assumes that studying in Canada automatically leads to PR without doing proper research, that is their responsibility. Prospective students need to understand the financial realities,and risks before making such a major decision.You can fake proof of funds, but you cannot fake the reality you will face after you arrive. Rent, food, bills, and tuition are real. Make sure your plans are realistic, sustainable, and based on your actual circumstances.

Freedom of expression is not discouragement. Sharing personal experiences and opinions, whether positive or negative, is a right.

If people can freely post success stories and encourage others to come to Canada through the student route, then others should also be free to talk about the struggles they have witnessed. Calling every honest opinion "discouragement" is simply an attempt to silence viewpoints that some people, like you, may not agree with.

At the end of the day, everyone is responsible for their own decisions. Advising people to do proper research before spending their money is common sense, not discouragement. The truth is not always comfortable, but it is still the truth.

I did not post my comment to discourage or encourage anyone to come to Canada as a student. It is your money and your decision.

But honestly, I would not advise even my enemy to come to Canada as a student without doing serious research, especially if PR is the goal. I would rather encourage people to consider learning French and exploring other better pathways.

This is my fourth year in Canada. I came as a PR, and I live in Toronto. There is a school close to my house, and I have seen many Nigerian students crying and regretting their decision because of academic stress, financial pressure, difficulty getting work, and no clear pr route.

People post nice pictures on social media, but not everyone shows the real struggle behind the scenes.
Our people need to hear the truth: research properly before making any decision. Research the course, the school, the PR pathway, job opportunities, and other alternatives before jumping into the student visa route.

what school are you looking at and what program ?

IELTS is good for getting admission, but in my opinion, it is not necessary.

Most school in canada will waive English proficiency for Nigerians.

All you need is to obtain an English proficiency letter from your school in Nigeria stating that your studies were conducted in English, that you were taught in English, and that all your exams were in English.

Your school registry in Nigeria knows how to issue this letter...even at that for some schools once the admission office in Canada knows you are Nigeria they normally wave language requirement

Your Canadian school will likely waive the IELTS requirement, but if you want to take it, you can. However, in my opinion, you do not need it

I wanted to change my tone to be nice for a sec, but the average Nigerian doesn’t like direct truth; they prefer sweet lies. Just like one guy mentioned, he paid 20k to join a group so they can add him so he can know how to school in Canada for 10 million naira

People who do not even have the funds are thinking about loans; IRCC does not waste time with that....

except you get a scholarship its very hard becasue you must explain to IRCC how you got your funds

I will always be direct: schooling abroad is not cheap siina. the avergae 2 years masters or PGD program will cost you about more than $45,000 CAD thats a conservative amount
