Nairaland / General / Alibaba Founder Jack Ma Retires At 55 With $38bn Wealth by PHILLAKAY: 1:51am On Sep 11, 2019
The founder and chairman of Alibaba – the Chinese e-market – has retired at the age of 55.
The charismatic former English teacher, who founded the internet company 20 years ago in a shared apartment, is stepping aside from the day-to-day running of the business to spend more time on his other great loves in life – his philanthropic works, education and his family.
Ma, as China’s richest man, does not have to worry about paying the bills.
According to the last estimate by Forbes, he has a net worth of $38.4bn (£31.1bn) thanks to the phenomenal success of Alibaba, though the changing of the guard at the top has investors in the US-listed firm worried.

At a time of slowing domestic sales amid the US-China trade war, Alibaba will be run solely by Daniel Zhang whose appointment was announced last year as part of a succession plan.
Ma said of him: “He has the logic and critical thinking skills of a super computer, a commitment to his vision, the courage to wholeheartedly dare to take on innovative business models and industries of the future.”
He has little of the charisma of Ma – known for a flamboyant approach to get attention.

Crime / Brazil Gang Leader Found Dead After A Failed Prison Break Dressed As Girl by PHILLAKAY: 11:33pm On Aug 06, 2019
The Brazilian gang leader whose failed prison escape dressed as his daughter made headlines is found dead in his prison cell on Tuesday.
The state prison service in Rio de Janeiro stated that officers found the body of Clauvino da Silva, on Tuesday morning at the prison complex he had tried to flee from recently.
Silva who was part of notorious Brazilian gang; had been serving a 73-year sentence when he tried to flee on Saturday with the help of a silicone mask, a black bra and wig, and a skin-tight T-shirt emblazoned with three pink doughnuts.
According to BBC :
“Prison officials said it appeared that Silva had hanged himself. On Tuesday guards found him in his cell in Bangu 1 prison in Rio de Janeiro state, to which he had been transferred after his unsuccessful escape attempt.”
—  BBC News
da Silva, affectionately known as Baixinho which means “Shorty”, had an epic fail prison break attempt as he tried to trick prison guards into thinking he was his 19-year-old daughter, who had been visiting and left in Silva’s cell.
da Silva’s daughter, who had stayed in his cell while her father tried to escape, was being investigated along with eight other people for the alleged involvement in the attempted prison break.
Suspicious officials stopped da Silva as he tried to leave the building and demanded he strips before the cameras. This video further went viral all over the world and da Silva was moved into solitary confinement as punishment.
Officials were celebrating their efforts to stop a prison break and distributed photographs and video of his unusual disguise to the media.
The Rio de Janeiro State Secretary of Prison Administration released photos showing Silva in his “girl image”; officials further indicated that da Silva was part of the leadership of the Red Command, which happens to be one of the most powerful criminal gang in Brazil that control drug trafficking in a large part of Rio.
This is not da Silva’s first attempt to jail-break
Silva had escaped from jail once before, in 2013, when he soldiered through the jail sewer system he was later apprehended.

Foreign Affairs / Bobi Wine Charged With "Annoying" President Museveni In Uganda by PHILLAKAY: 10:56pm On Aug 06, 2019
A Ugandan court on Tuesday charged pop star turned leading opposition figure Bobi Wine with “annoying” President Yoweri Museveni, his lawyer told AFP.

The singer, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi, appeared in court on a prior treason charge after he and other opposition politicians allegedly stoned Museveni’s convoy during a campaign rally in August last year.

“He was charged with annoying the president” in relation to the same case, his lawyer Asuman Basalirwa told AFP.

Wine who entered parliament in 2017, has emerged as a leading critic of Museveni — who has been in power for over three decades — and has faced multiple detentions while authorities have frustrated his efforts to perform.

He announced last month that he would take on Museveni in 2021 national elections.“
This government of President Museveni is in panic mode. At first it was treason and now it is annoying President Museveni. Who on earth can’t be annoyed?” Wine told AFP.“

It is a ridiculous charge and am ready to challenge it in court,” he said.

The new accusation against Wine comes just days after prominent activist Stella Nyanzi was sentenced to 18 months in prison over her vulgar posts on social media against Museveni — which she sees as a way to get her message across.
