Adire Eleko, which was originated from the Western part of Nigeria in the early 19th century is one of my favorite designs in fabric design method.

This dying technique is created by spreading cassava flour paste on the fabric through a designed motif or stencil of your choice. The cassava paste (mixed with active dying agents) acts as a dye-resist on the fabric when immersed into the dye bath.

The flexibility of making Adire Eleko from different imaginary intricate designs into reality is amazing.

In the 90s,parents believed that only the 'big-named' courses like law, medicine, engineering and accounting would put food on the table. They believed that vocations were meant for the illiterates.

" If you are not careful, I'll send you to a tailor's shop to learn the trade!"
My mum would scold me. I wasn't bold enough to tell her that I loved the fashion job! She would have landed me the NIGERIAN SLAP OF LIFE if I dared to.

During university days, I'll buy fabrics at Tejuosho market to make some tops through the tailor beside my mum's shop. I recycled my old tops and skirts. Some of my nosey friends would notice and we all laughed it off. I would borrow some money from dad to do quick business of making and selling simple tops. Fast forward to days after school, I wanted to follow my passion. I wanted to be a fashion designer but I couldn't just tell my dad. I didn't want to break his heart.

THE BREAKTHROUGH
A friend borrowed me a book titled "WHO MOVED MY CHEESE?". I read through and decided to borrow my dad. He wondered why but I insisted. He loved the book so much and agreed that life was not how he saw it after all. That was when I could tell him about my passion for fashion and guess what? HE GAVE HIS FULL SUPPORT!

PRICING

Pricing is very important in the fashion business. Your pricing must look the price. If the price is too expensive, it will not sell. If its too cheap, you won't make enough profit, hence, will frustrate you out of business. Before you think of how to place your price, you have to put some factors into consideration.

- Your Customers: How much can they afford? What price do they buy clothes. People are different. Some could feel that if it's too cheap, its of low quality.

Your Location: The area which you operate business is also very important. You cannot charge the price of high-rise location if you sell in the low-rise or ghetto.


What Should You Do?

- Survey Price: Visit other stores that sell clothes that are similar to yours. This will give you an idea of how much you should sell yours. Check the fabrics used, finishing and packaging (don’t copy their designs, it will degrade your brand) Also, be ready to explain how you arrived at the price in terms of fabrics quality, embellishment and work force to whoever asks questions.

HOW TO PRICE

- Most upcoming fashion designer’s don’t know how to put a price on their product. Your price must cover everything you used before the garment is sold; fabrics, accessories, workmanship, electricity, samples, patterns, telephone, trade shows, advertising, public relations etc. You should make all your cost based on all these...
