The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) on Thursday gave a two-week ultimatum to the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, to resolve the strike embarked upon by university lecturers since 1 July. The NUT President, Mr Michael Olukoya, gave the ultimatum in Abuja at the end of the union’s meeting with teachers’ representatives across the country. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that ASUU, had on July 1, embarked on a strike it described as “comprehensive, total and indefinite”. The lecturers are protesting the non-implementation of some issues, contained in an agreement the union had entered into with the Federal Government since 2009. Olukoya said that members of the union would not hesitate to close down the nation’s schools, if the two parties failed to reach agreement after two weeks. He described the current ASUU strike “as nationalistic, patriotic and self-sacrificing. “We will not hesitate to shut down the education system in the country, if the government fails to fulfil or honour the agreement it entered into with the lecturers.” The NUT president said that Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo’s call for a complete over-haul of teachers’ qualification as unacceptable to the NUT. He said that the blame should be put on the doorsteps of the employers and not teachers. “NUT will forever be proud of all its teachers, believing that all employment agencies are corruption-free, disciplined and quality conscious in their employment drives.” Olukoya also urged the governors of Kogi, Benue and Cross River to honour the agreement they made with teachers on the payment of 27.5 per cent teachers salary structure. |
Wizee: Op that was then, bcoz now Govt school teachers don't teach like b4. You can imagine where a govt school teacher will bring his/her own business to school. How will he/she be serious about teaching. Bt the lecturers shld get moreriverstate teachers are serious with their jobs |
God, see the academic qualification of those who want to lead us. Many of them hav ssce, neco, wasc as their highest certificate. In as much as high academic qualification does not ensure good leadership but at least, we shld be sure our leaders can speak gud english. |

theoctopus: While I will not want to bash Amaechi this morning or necessarily go along with the @op, I do wonder one thing. Why is it that almost all the defenders of Amaechi are Yorubas living in the south west, yet they claim they known PH better than Rivers state people? Most people of Rivers are tired and pissed off with Amaechi right now. He has completely abandonded the state and is going around campaigning. He is more interested in NGF and VP position right now than Rivers state. Something will happen very soon. Just watch................ dats a lie. go nd luk at d work going on at slaughter-elelenwo road. he is still working |
some pple surprise me o. they bhave worse than children@op. u pass 2ru a bad road nd u say amaechi is corrupt, ph is rot. it waz only 1 road i saw in dat ur pix nd do u expect amaechi 2 transform ph in jxt 2 tenures. go 2 oda places nd c his gud works. even wit his present political travails, he is still working. at least he is dualising slaughter road now. |
Big Brother Africa 2013 finalist, Beverly Osu who represented Nigeria and became one of the most talked-about housemate has now revealed that being controversial has never been her goal. In a recent interview on Abuja, she talks about life before the house and what her future plans her. Read Excerpts: Life before Big Brother: Before Big Brother, I was into entertainment. Big Brother Africa was just a platform for me to do what I wanted to do. Before now, I wanted to be an actress, I wanted to be a reverend sister, but things did not just work out the way I planned it. Being a controversial housemate: Going to the house, I didn't have any plan or strategy. I just went in there. While in the house, I used to be blunt every time, it used to be me living my normal life. The controversial side, I don't know because I used to be a very sweet person. On how she was never up for eviction: I didn't do anything. I know that people picked my name but I wasn't bothered because I also got to pick one or two people. I knew when Natasha or anybody else picked me for eviction but I understood it was just a game. However, I was generally liked in the house because I'm a people's person. On her relationship with Angelo Me and Angelo were so business minded people, we think alike, we do a lot of things together. We have projects we are working on together so, it was much like we went to BBA as individuals but we didn't come there to mark time. And now, we have a platform we have to use. Now, he is in his country but when there is something to do, we will go together. It is not that we won't have our time but it's more of the business because we all came for something in our lives and since we have gotten the opportunity, we should use it right. Her future plans: School, my career-acting, so many things in next year let me feel I'm not sure what to say next because my voice is Ok |

Members of the Abubakar Kawu Baraje-led faction of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) has commenced a seven-day fasting and prayer beginning today, to intercede for the prolonged strike by members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). This spiritual intervention was bred out of the concern of the new PDP faction for the plight of parents and students who have been affected by the prolonged ASUU strike and they have therefore, called on all its members worldwide to participate in this exercise. The new PDP has however, set up a four-man Committee consisting of Governor Babangida Aliyu of Niger State as Chairman, Governor Murtala Nyako of Adamawa State, Chinwo Ike, President of UNIPORT Alumni, and Mr. Timi Frank, the nPDP National Youth Leader to advise the party on the best way to get the Federal Government's negotiating committee and the leadership of ASUU to reach an agreement on the issues at stake and thus end this three-month-old strike. The group said: "We sincerely solicit the patience of Nigerians while appealing to the Federal Government and the leadership of ASUU to end this imbroglio so that our children may go back to school instead of engaging in acts inimical to their future. "The need for this has become urgent as reports reaching us indicate that many of these students have out of frustration and boredom turned to prostitution, armed robbery and other vices due to the prolonged strike. |
