An Interview with Oba Alhaji Abdulazeez Adebayo Olateju, The Oba Yoruba in Enugu, Who settled in Enugu 46 years ago, in 1979
Excerpts: Interviewer: Where are you from, sir? Oba: I am from Ede, in Osun State.
Interviewer: You speak Igbo so fluently. Where did you learn it from? Oba (responding in Igbo): I learned the language here in Enugu. God gave me the gift of understanding languages and the ear to hear. Many people often wonder if I was born or schooled here, but that’s not the case. I was already an adult, fully grown when I relocated to Enugu from Osun. I even voted during the era of Jim Nwobodo and later for Shehu Shagari.
Interviewer: I also learned you speak Hausa. Did you learn it here too? Oba (replying in Hausa): Yes, I speak and understand Hausa fluently but I have never lived in the North. I picked it up here in Enugu, just by listening to people around me.
Oba: Everywhere I go in Igboland, people take me as one of their own. My grandmother who once tried to discourage me from settling here in Igboland but before she passed in 2012 was very happy and always thanking God for leading me to Igboland. I kept bringing all my relatives here and today they are all doing well because Igboland is good to us.

Been vulnerable and defenceless coupled with depression led me into joining a cult group. If I had joined while in school, I may not have lived to tell the full story cos I was going to be killed. I became even more scared cos I was a stranger in that place. This was what led to my Traveling outta the place.. I joined them in attending all the meetings and these meetings always result in attacks from rival groups. Then I asked myself why I should be living such a careless life that could make me die like a cockroach at any time? I asked myself again, Do I want to die so soon after all I suffered to achieve in life? I have completely left the environment, blocked all the phone contacts of my colleagues and even on Facebook. I'm no longer interested. I want peace. I have come along way and wouldn't want to be harmed for no reason but because I joined a wrong association out of Depression and loneliness. For those who were there and denounced their association with them, is there any other thing I need to do? I'm at peace with myself because I didn't kill or harm anybody while I was in the group. Since I joined after sch, I wasn't recruited into the rank and file of the association but as a Senior Man.
BlessedGift: Former Vice President and chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has assured that the Yoruba people will hold prominent positions in his government if elected President in 2027, dismissing fears of a Hausa-Fulani domination.
Atiku, who is married to a Yoruba woman, described the Yoruba ethnic group as “one of the finest species of humanity” and emphasized the deep personal and familial ties he shares with them.
“It is for this reason that I count myself extremely lucky to have a wife from amongst this noble specie of the human race,” Atiku said in a statement issued by his media consultant, Kola Johnson. “The bond uniting me with the Yoruba is like the genetic bond of a family, and this is why the Yoruba, whether individually or collectively, have always occupied a special place in my heart.”
The former vice president highlighted that his first wife, Titi Atiku Abubakar, is from Ijesa in Osun State, and they have four Yoruba children together. “She is now over 75 years old, and we are still together. My children with Titi sometimes call me Baba Rere, meaning ‘good father.’”
Atiku further dismissed suggestions that his presidency would lead to northern domination. “The fear that my ascension to the presidency might lead to Hausa-Fulani domination over Yoruba or other ethnic groups does not arise. The Yoruba are my larger extended family and in-laws,” he said.
Praising the Yoruba for their sophistication and educational advancement, Atiku said: “Yoruba are so sophisticated and highly educated that you can only toy with them at your own peril. My Ijesa-born Yoruba wife is more than a wife to me — she is my jewel of inestimable value.”
He added that Yoruba people have consistently ranked among his closest friends and associates, both in private and public life.

The Justice Annabel Mtalimanja-led Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has so far announced the official results of 24 (out of 36) councils with 85-year old Arthur Peter Mutharika of the Democratic Progressive Party polling 2022879 votes as against the incumbent and perennial rival, Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) with 732575 votes.
Malawi laws allow a maximum 8 days for election results to be announced, with the winner needing a 50%+1 margin to be so declared. The results for the remaining 12 councils is expected to be announced at 3pm Nigerian time.
The duo have now faced each other in close Presidential contests four times (2014, 2019, 2020 & 2025). Chakwera, 70, a preacher and instructor, holds a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy and also a BTh, MTh and Doctorate in Theology. He was the General Superintendent & head of the Malawi Assemblies of God Church from 1989, and at one time, Secretary of the World Assemblies of God Church until his surprising resignation and foray into politics in 2013. Elected Member of the Parliament and leader of the opposition thereafter in 2014, Chakwera premised his policy on fighting corruption, job creation and lowering food prices for the largely rural Southern African nation.
During his tenure as President, he has faced heavy criticisms ranging from his many appointments of relatives and persons from his own political stronghold, fewer women in his cabinet, rising inflation (+20%) aided in part by the cyclone/climate change effects, fuel shortages, selective fight against corruption, rising food prices and economic drought.
On the other hand, Mutharika, a teacher and Professor of International and Comparative Law have at different times served as a Minister of Foreign Affairs, Minister of Justice, Minister of Education, Science & Technology as well as been a Member of Parliament under Bingu Wa Mutharika (his older brother and 3rd President of Malawi who died whilst in office in 2012).
In 2014 before the Presidential Election, Mutharika relinquished his US PR status after it was found out he holds a US Green Card, a disqualification criterion to contest the Malawian Presidency (Malawi outlaws dual citizenship for the Presidency). The 85 year old, a University of London and Yale University alumni was elected President in 2014 in a first 5-year term, in what Malawians term as a period of heavy sleaze and corruption including allegations of his receiving a $200000 bribe for a multi-million Police contract, one he denied.
In 2019, he was re-elected in controversial circumstances with what is now known as 'Tippexing election' where results were manipulated and changed with tip-pex, a brand of correction fluid, heavy protests followed even after his swearing-in on May 31, 2019. Known as the 'Tippexing President', consistent opposition and street protests trailed his Government until the Constitutional Court on 5/2/2020 under heavy military protection in a 7-hour judgement annulled the election (2nd time in Africa after Kenya's in 2017) and ordered a fresh election in 150 days; he lost to Chakwera thereafter. His 2025 chosen Vice President-elect is Justice Jane Ansah (rtd), the chairperson of MEC who midwifed the controversial 2019 Presidential Election.
17 aspirants contested in the Presidential election with about 7.2million voters.

Beerbeer: We are four siblings in my family: two boys who are twins and two girls. When my mum passed, my elder sister stood in as a parent for us. She paid for our university education and sent us monthly allowances for feeding. In fact, three of us would have dropout if not for her. Even when I graduated from school, she was still sending me 30k every month, pending when I get a job. This is in addition to also sending same to my siblings and my father. She has done this for close to 10 years without complaint.
Recently, I finished a project that paid me 2.1 million. This is how I spent the money: I gave 500k to my church to thank them for getting me the job. 300k to my father. 100k to my stepmum. 100k to my second sister. Bought 700k laptop to help with my coding job. I used the rest to pay rent, change my wardrobe, clearance from school, and feeding.
My elder sister found out from my twin brother and got angry because I didn't tell her anything about the job or the money. She was also angry because I didn't set aside money for my twin brother going to law school this year.
To be honest, I didn't think it was a big deal to tell her. I knew my twin was in safe hands cos she was already handling that so I didn't bother. Before now, she had already paid the law school fees (about 500k). So I thought it was settled. I tried to reason with her but she refused to hear.
She was also angry I didn't tell her about the laptop. I knew I messed up here because she was the one that encouraged me to pick up coding and even bought my first laptop. I told her I wanted to finalize everything but it made her angry tye more. She blocked me and I also found out she blocked everyone else including our father.
All these happened in April. I thought she would calm down by now. But I just discovered that she has moved out of our state without telling anyone. She has blocked all the numbers we tried to reach her.
My twin brother said she only sends him allowance for law school (100k every month) and has blocked his number so he won't contact her. He is the only person she sends money to now as she has stopped giving us as before.
I am so confused. Why is she acting like this? Shouldn't she be happy for me? Nairalanders help me.
