Timothy Here Again, 

A quitter never wins and a Winner Never Quit. 

Frankly, combining your exams and other personal engagements like work and family is not an easy one. 3 years ago, A woman, let's call her Temitayo, who was writing the May Diet of that year, called me to say that she wanted to postpone her sitting for the exams to the November Diet.

This is okay because you cannot stop people from exercising their free will as a human. As usual for me, I acknowledged the fact that it was a good decision but probed further. According to her, a personal commitment just came up so she had to postpone it to the next diet. 

However, my simple question is how long have you been preparing for the exams?

Her response was sober and she said 6years. I went further to ask why she had been postponing her exams and her response was the same personal engagement that she was unwilling to disclose. However, I let her know that when it is November, she will still postpone it then finally give up on herself because the personal engagement will not stop coming. 

It will increase. As a result, I encouraged her to write 2 papers instead of 4 papers. Although, it might be expensive but taking this simple action will tell her real self, that inner voice that knows her, the voice that will tell her that she is not serious that she is ready to take the bull by the horn.  

Temitope then decided to write FR and CSME, so she ordered for her simplified and Comprehensive Video lectures and she passed. After the result was released on 20th December 2023, Majority of students who passed from one level to another find it difficult to know the paper to write. Most of them know that their current job will not give them the chance to study effectively and efficiently. 
But that is not all; family engagement is among the factors too. I know of a woman who should have qualified since 2016 but due to events beyond her control and her inability to know the exact courses to write, she had to postpone the exams for 3 years. Although she is now an ACA.

Frankly, students, especially those who are very busy always ask which paper combination should they write and pass once without going through any stress, I always recommend to them and it had worked wonders. I have decided to share this vital information with you.

There are 2 types of papers.
1.Calculations
2.Theoretical/Explanation

In studying for both Calculations and Theoretical, generally split your studying concentration percentage to 60%-40% (in favour of the calculations paper) but no more than this. The key to the Theoretical papers is generally past paper / question technique - this takes time

So, to get the best, go through the following:

-Write Financial Reporting (FR), CSME, before Audit and Assurance (or together)

-Write CSME before Audit and Assurance (or together)

-Write FR, CSME and Public Sector Accounting and Finance

-Write CSME as soon as possible after Audit and Assurance.

There is a lot of common ground regarding internal audit and corporate governance which will help you.

Furthermore, you can also do Performance Management with either Public Sector Accounting and Finance or Performance Management alone.

Furthermore, SFM and Corporate Reporting have very large syllabi - be aware when choosing these with other papers

Write Advanced Audit and Assurance (AAA), Case Study, Corporate Reporting (CR) together

This is really, really helpful as the basic principles of CR standards (not calculations though) are all vital in AAA.

SFM can either be written alone or with Advanced Taxation together or with AAA. Although they are not directly related but your chances of passing the is very high when compared to SFM and CR

The examiner expectations are a far greater range of points and thus knowledge than any of the other papers - so its a proper combination of lots of knowledge work and application skills

Whatever you choose I hope this has helped your thinking a little - they're not meant to be rules, but rather just things for you to consider when choosing.

This post is strictly for those who wrote the last ICAN Exam and did not make it. There are many students who feel like giving up especially if you have one course left to qualify or move on to the next level.

I understand that it is very frustrating and demoralizing because I have been there. I have tasted it too.

However, don't take it too seriously because life cannot subdue you. You must refuse to take her discipline too seriously.

When life tries to hurt you, laugh over it and let the laughter know no pain. For there is laughter in your soul. Because temporary defeat can never make you sad. It simply sets music to the words of defeat and turns it into a song.

Frankly, life is a fickle trickster which slips the emotion of love into your heart so as to make you feel bad. Yet, you have learned to dodge it with laughter.

Hence, Don't take yourself too seriously when things don't go in your favour.

Keep pushing, keep trying, it is not over yet, you must qualify, you must not make it an abandoned project than we will hunt your career in the future. Then you will now be saying that "Had I Known"

You don't need to wait until it gets to that stage. Take the necessary action now...Don't let life trick you.

* Set Personal Goals: Be a person who learns and improves themselves - studying is just what you do. Every day.

* Have Challenges: You’re a person who improves themselves daily.

* Be Curious: Approach the classrooms with a sense of wonder - why are leases treated like they are? Why do we depreciate assets… ask why…a lot!

* Think of the Bigger Picture: not only do you grow as a person but your family and those around you gain benefits too

It is no longer news that the ICAN Exams result was released yesterday. What was tagged as a rumour was the true date of the release of ICAN Exam results.

So, if you are among those who did not make it, especially if you have been writing one course for several diets in spite of your studies and practice of questions and answers. I'm sure something went wrong somewhere.

Although, those who passed the exams were not superhuman with a special ability to pass their exams.

They are humans like you, which means that

—You may be making little mistakes or
—You did not attempt the questions in the context of the Examiner's requirements.
—It may be that you don't even know where to start after seeing the exam questions.
—Or you don't even understand the topic and its application.
—You understood the Topic and did very well based on your perception but did not do as required.

December 18, 2022, was a great day all around the world with the Adrenaline World Cup final. It is one of the best if not the best World Cup final that I have seen. Over 1.1 Billion viewers were glued to their televisions with their hearts beating like a supercharger.

Usually, I don't have much time to watch football but this final made me glued to the TV until the last penalty was taken.

France was outstanding and never gave up despite being down by 2 goals. They kept pressing until they scored in the 80th and 81st minute. Although they lost the match but they gave their best.

Frankly, nobody prays for bad events to happen to him or her but sincerely, life is about ups and downs and this post is not targeted at undermining your worth but to point out the dangers of postponing your exams.

You cannot get your desired result in your ICAN exams if you are still doing the same thing. Life is a mixture of accomplishments and failures, it is a combination of positive and negative.

When you experience the negative, like failing an exam, it's a sign that you need to fix something immediately. I have tasted all in ICAN -  failure, passing partially and Passing in one sitting. It is a part of life and you must learn to handle failure, don’t ignore it. You don’t have to live with it or dwell with it but handle it.

One of the ways of handling it is to first identify the problems that lead to such a negative result. A recent survey carried out on over 400 students revealed the below common problems and the practical experienced solution applicable to them. They include:

1. Time: Most students complained about the time factor. That is, there is not enough time for them to study. Frankly, everybody from young and old, successful and unsuccessful students have the same 24 Wonderful hours.

The question is how do you spend yours? You have between now and the exam date. Do you spend it on social media, music channels, TGIF, Owambe etc, thinking you still have enough time?

2. Complex Syllabus: It depends on your perception. The syllabus has been structured and broken down into topics and subtopics for your easy "digestion". ICAN even went ahead to categorise them by percentages (weight of importance) in the syllabus.

5. Inability to properly interpret questions: From experience, you cannot interpret a question when you don’t understand the topic. If you are the type that cram, then passing is left to chance. However, you can overcome this through constant studying and deliberately opening your mind to understand the topic.

6. Lack of Simplified materials: It is not really a lack of material but a lack of discipline. Frankly, there are several students who have abandoned their ICAN Exams for reasons best known to them and currently, it has not affected their career yet.

Now that you have concluded your ICAN Professional Examination, there is a tendency that you may be thinking about it even when you don't talk about it that much.

In simple terms, I am referring to post-exam thoughts and stress. How do you really manage them?

Last Saturday, I received an email from Rebecca who requested how she can manage post-exam stress which is taking a chunk of her energy and concentration. After a long conversation, I decided to share it with you so that you too can benefit from it.

As we all know, exams are stressful. It takes a chunk of your physical and mental energy. However, that one is just the first phase.

There is yet, another form of exam stress that doesn’t get recognized as much in a general discussion on this topic. And this is what I want to touch on today.

I’m talking about the exam stress that comes after you have written your exams and those seeds of doubt in your ability prop back up when it is ultimately too late to do anything about it.

So, here are some of the recommendations I told Rebecca to follow after writing any exams.

1. Never Search your notes after an exam looking for answers: We’ve all done it. You finish a particularly rough exam and, in a desperate bid to console yourself that you knew what you wrote, you immediately begin searching your notes to see if you got the test questions correct. Doing this is risky as it almost always leads to heartbreak.

2. Use your exam break to do something you enjoy: This point may seem obvious to some, but the exam break should be used to reward yourself - sport, some other short knowledge acquisition etc.

3. Belief in your ability: Writing a bad exam can be a deflating experience, especially if you feel like you put in a more than adequate effort in preparing for it. Keep in mind, however, that there is a myriad of factors that can lead to you writing a bad exam beyond your comprehension of the course material.

Perhaps you focused on the wrong material, or weren’t studying as effectively as you thought you were or fell ill the day before — these are all plausible situations. Try to learn from your bad exam experience and use it to more effectively prepare for future exams.

4. Resume your routines back: During the final weeks of the exams, many of us are scrambling for time to get everything we need to get accomplished. In doing so we tend to neglect certain other important parts of our lives (loved ones, Owambe etc)

5. Don't Talk to Your Colleagues about the exam. Don't talk with your colleagues about the exams because their answers can be damaging if they responded to the exam questions differently than you did.

Do these and see the difference.
