Very correct. Do you know the beautiful thing? All of our alumni who are lawmakers are not in support of the renaming. It cannot work. The students, the staff, the alumni, even indigenes of Borno are against it.

That’s how it should be. And must a University be renamed after a president who might have not done excellently well for the Institution or the Educational sector in general.

Someone wrote in earlier post , imagine you graduate and take your degree abroad, and it’s Buhari University
There are names that shouldn’t be associated with a University. If they want, they can rename NDA to Buhari Academy, after all he was a military officer
Or was Buhari an Alumni of UNIMAID?
Thank you.

Did Remi not receive Aisha after her return from London?

This popular opinion about Tinubu desperately wanting to win over Buhari's loyalists may just be true.

That is good development. You cannot keep holding, while there is scarcity of space and accommodation in the land. Same should be replicated in Abuja.
Although, instead of pulling down in Abuja, Government should seize and allocate those empty estates and buildings to the public.

Empty plots in choice areas of every city like PH, Enugu, Abuja, Lagos etc, should be re allocated to serious developers who would build to let or private abode, and bridge the gap in the real estate industry which would force the prices of rent down.
God bless you for this brilliant submission. I hope they act.

The international airport in Maiduguri, the Senate Building in University of Maiduguri, the Trauma Center in the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, a secondary school are all named after Buhari in Maiduguri. A female hostel in University of Maiduguri is named after Aisha Buhari.

Yet PBAT felt the smartest thing to do is rename the whole University after this same person. Very ill informed decision. Aside the UNIMAID community, the indigenes of Borno are groaning because of this.

Its actually nice to note you will challenge this in court, though I think Buhari as a two time H.O.S and the first governor of Borno isn't entirely devoid of deserving this honour (especially as he was governor around the time the university was formed), however he already has the airport in Maiduguri named after him so naming the university after him may be too much for indigenes and stakeholders.

As for your point on Oxbridge, you are right to say they are known as Public universities in the UK but this is only because they receive government money (mainly as the government pays tuition for their citizens, which makes almost every university in the UK a bit of a public institution); however the government does/did not own the institutions nor their assets and most of the funding these two universities receive is from the private sector (85% for Oxford at the last count). So they are pretty much like Harvard in all ways (don't forget that though Harvard is private, Trump has been forcing them to bow to his will using threats of cutting government funding and FG's powers as their regulator to ensure they fall in line with his MAGA vision. So this again shows how its almost impossible for any university not to be somewhat controlled by the government).

@PMG2024

The pleasure is mine.

Absolutely well said. I didn't even realize that Muhammudu Buhari has many monuments named after him in Borno State. One thing I noticed about Tinubu is that once something gets to his notice, he changes course from the earlier intended plan and listens to the voice of the people if it's a rational thing to do.

You folks will have to let him know personal through 'Femi Gbaja his Chief-of-Staff and the VP Shettima himself about the alreaady existing multiple naming of infrastructure after Buhari in Maiduguri. That to me is an overkill! Besides, he's from Katsina State, so Katsina majorly (or any military institution) can have Federal institutions renamed after him. Till date, many alumni who attended the "University of Ife" still prefer by default to identify themselves as products of "University of Ife" NOT "Obafemi Awolowo University, Ife" despite the FACT that Chief Jeremiah Obafemi Awolowo, GCFR, SAN, was an iconic man who brought innovative development to the Old Western Region.

Cheers.
Thanks brother. I appreciate your contributions and valuable insights. We will diplomatically engage those you have advised. God bless you!

Lets be a bit factual in these arguments.

Havard is named after it's founder.

Yale was renamed after a particular benefactor that came almost 20 years later and gave substantial donations.

Oxford and Cambridge are almost a 1000 years old and both were formed by groups of theologians/academics, thus no one person got the naming rights. However both Universities consist of several autonomous colleges, and a lot of the colleges are named after people.

Again, none of these universities above are owned by one person or government, they are private universities, and the private people chose the names.

Also several American presidents have prominent universities named after them, with George Washington alone having 5 ! Bush Snr, Clinton, Bush jnr, Obama and Biden all have educational institutions named after them.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_educational_institutions_named_after_presidents_of_the_United_States

Though I agree with sentiment that says you should not change names of prominent institutions without the buy in of stakeholders, the fact remains government owns them and until these institutions can prove they are prominent enough to be self sufficient, everything any of us say about renaming them is pure opinion.
This should be about the second most objective response I have read today. The rest are just political vultures making noise and working for their stipends. Thank you for your objectivity, and sincerely, I learnt a couple of new things.
Infact, I cannot gainsay anything you have stated in your post. But I will love to chip in that Oxford and Cambridge are regarded as Public institutions and receive government funding. I agree with you on how they were formed though.

Finally, we hope to challenge this decision in court, I believe that is our last resort. Even though your last paragraph already sheds light on what the possible outcome might be based on "he who pays the piper" reality. We can at least try. Thanks again!

You guys will have to massively hit the streets of Maiduguri like the UNILAG students did years back before you will be taken seriously and the government and/or the President of Nigeria would listen. If NOT, then the new name would remain permanentky. The University of Abuja was renamed "Yakubu Gowon University, Abuja" just in 2024 and the rebranding looks OK to me with the new name. The Abuja master plan was also initiated by his Gowon's military government, so the renaming wasn't too bad.

Tbh, I know that it's simply because Muhammadu Buhari was once the military Governor of a large state that encompassed Borno and Yobe States that the government renamed that institution after Buhari whose mother also had mixed Hausa and Kanuri ancestral heritage. The then "National Stadium in Abuja" was rightly renamed to "MKO Abiola National Stadium, Abuja" because as a multimillionaire, he was regarded as the "pillar of sports" having funding sports activities the most as a private citizen and business mogul while alive.

The Nigerian President would also have consulted with the now Vice-President Kashim Shettima over the renaming being a former student of that institution as seen right BELOW.

=>https://www.nairaland.com/7606556/kashim-shettima-shares-photo-undergraduate#121656808

Because of the purpose of branding, I absolutely do NOT like the idea of changing the original names of educational and medical institutions to the names of prominent people who have passed on.
Thank you for your brilliant submission. I can tell you for free that the VC and the academic community were taken aback by the announcement. VP Kashim Shettima isn't the only one that should have been consulted, should he? Borno indigenes are so livid. Literally every major infrastructure in Maiduguri has Buhari on it. Including the Senate Building, Female Hostel, Teaching Hospital and other centers of UNIMAID. The International Airport also. It only reeks of high service to be very honest. But like you have rightly said, the ball is in our courts as stakeholders of UNIMAID.

You know the south west people are bold and confront things heads o.

With the north being conservative and the love they have for Buhari, and the fact that he just passed away. The North might not be bold enough to collectively speak against it like the south west did for unilag.
That is why I as a southerner from Oyo State spearheaded the petition and now it has been captured on one of the national dailies. So far, the petition has garnered over 6500 signatures. I very much understand what you mean, but through our collective actions, we have been able to get a lot of our alumni and students (who although are quite conservative) to speak up. We will be engaging media houses next week, and will follow up with a peaceful walk to the National Assembly. Our final resort is the Court. We will take the FG to court.

UNILAG is there, he can name it after Buhari to show his love and loyalty to him. Maybe he thought he will get northern votes by doing this!
Even for UNILAG, we reject it. I am an alumnus of both UNIMAID and UNILAG and we say no to renaming of educational institutions after politicians.

In 2012, Tinubu received over 100 protesting students of UNILAG who marched to his house to submit a letter of petition against the renaming of UNILAG. He received the petition and would later lend his voice to the struggle then, categorically stating that renaming UNILAG wasn't the best way to immortalise MKO Abiola.

Today, we vehemently refuse the renaming of UNIMAID. Re-echoing Tinubu's words that renaming UNIMAID is not the best way to immortalise Muhammadu Buhari.

Yes, our voice will be heard. UNIMAID is not a place for politicians to toil with.

Will USA change the name of Harvard University to honour a past president?

Will UK rename University of Oxford or University of Cambridge in honour of a late King or Queen or Prime Minister?

Will University of Toronto alter its name to immortalise a politician?

These are centuries old institutions of learning yet they have three things in common - excellence, consistency, and legacy.

We must stop renaming our educational institutions after politicians. University of Maiduguri is 50 years old this year for heaven's sake.

It is very wrong.

Go and name the Federal University of Transportation in Daura after Buhari. There is the Nigerian Army University Biu which can be used to immortalise him being a former General. Even though I don't support the idea of renaming educational institutions after politicians.
