We dnt necessarily have to breakup. Nigeria as a state lacks legitimacy. And a state can not develop when it lacks the support of the majority of its citizenry (legitimacy). And no developed country achieved legitimacy by force (military). The only way to do that is by dialogue with the citizens. The conner stone of China's development is legitimacy of the state. We MUST discuss first, and resolve the issue ot ethnicity in Nigeria through sincere dialogue, and reach a concrete agreement by all ethnic groups b4 we can achieve meaningful progress. By then, all these Aguta killings, Baifra, Boko haram, Mile 12 killings, and ethnic clashese will be over. Peace and stability will be achieved and development wil take place. "Nigeria is a mere geopgraphical expression" will vanish. Let all begin to talk about #ethnic dialogue# Ochuba |
Is not all about justice. It is beyond that. Nigeria needs serious dialogue. |
The truth must be told!! The needful must be done!! Sen. Ben Murry Burce must move motion in the house if truely he loves Nigeria. Nobody should see me as anti-Ben Murry Bruce or being against his most valuable book. But i still insist that he must go beyond commonsense appeal and take pragmatic steps in solving Nigeria problems. I critised his book for lack of coherent and logic, especially when place within the purview of ethnicity and tribalism which he saw as the underpining factor hindering Nigeria's progress. I never wanted to bring this issue up again, but current happenings which have validated my critique, forced me to do this. These events include, but not limited to Ese abduction and Emir of Kanu's role; Aguta killings and sentiments flowing from it; the Biafra agitation and Kanu trial, and issues emanating from it; ethnic division on social media; position of some of our national leaders on tribalism, such as Femi Kayode; ethnic division among students and youths; and most especially, the recent continous killings in Mile 12 Lagos, btw Yorubas and Hausas extraction. I still insist that people like Ben Murry Bruce, who wants to see Nigeria progress, should go beyond pleading to different ethnic groups, to see themselves as brothers and sisters (When in truth they are not), but find a way to fundamentally address the Awolowo's scientifically proven assertion "Nigeria is a mere geographical expression" which have been hunting us. It is only when this is done, that Ben can now compare Nigeria and those countries he mentioned. No need for us to continue to live in pretence. We need to address our fundamental problem. Note: this is not to say i do not believe in Nigeria. But we must move our country foward, by telling ourselves the truth. China modernised by "seeking the truth from the fact" So we must seek the truth from the fact. Ochuba #Trying to see things differently# |
Nigeria and the wayforward - Ben Bruce's strategic plan. I noted in the conclusion of my crtique of Ben Murry Bruce's book of Commonsense Revolution, that the book is somehow faulty, though has some commonsense in it. Now, i want to put my constructive criticism outside and elaborate on the good part of the book that made my appeal. Just in the spirit of moving Nigeria forward. Ben spoke extensively on many ways Nigeria can move farward. But the part that struck and upgraded my thinking faculty was his strong analysis of EDUCATION as a strong instrument for sustainable development. He did not choose the word education, rather "WE NEED MORE BRAIN INFRASTRUCTURE" However, his conceptualisation of education and its intended effects differs from my own, though complementary. His major argument is that, education is a major instrument for fighting insecurity and not gun. Now, taking an insignificant walk out of our general perception of education in Nigeria, as an acquisition of knowledge in order to get a good job and live a comfortable life. Education has been a very vital and strong instrument for national development, especially in the area of science and technology. At this point, i define modernization and development as the ability to master science and technology. This my definition simply tells you that all developed countries of the word have mastered science and technology. Just mention any of them in contrary. In other words, any country claiming to be developed without science and technology is underdeveloped just like Nigeria and Africa. You will therefore, agree with me that these two are not just read in theories but learnt in practice. My little inquring about many developed countries shows that, these countres spent 'sooooo' much money in educating their citizens to master science and technology. A good example is China. The summary of China model of development is that, the government of China at point assembled a very small number of its researchers and engineers to study and digest the western technologies and then develop China's own. Is this not marvelous? This is the spirit of a country that wants to develop. Let me not go far. In Nigeria, year in- year - out, we have group of engineers finishing with first class from our prestigous univeristies, and end up scampering for a few empolyment spaces meant for economists, accountants, business adms. Political scientists etc. Recently, Unilag produced the highest first class students from engineering (41). What next?? We have many talented-scientifically inclined citizens. Some without formal education, but have constructed aircrafts, houses, cars, electricity, and many more. But, these people are barely noticed. The only people we notice are the breadseller (Olajumoke) that even Mr Ruben Abatti wrote special articule for her; the fight of Olamide and Don Jazz, Davido and his babymama (Ruben also wrote about it) and many more insignificant events. I therefore, suggest that our government should focus more on our educational-technological advancement, and one way we can achieve that is to copy from China, by assembling some of our researchers and engineers, send them to the west to study and digest the western technologies. Like Ben Bruce also suggested, we should find a way to assemble back our people who have excelled in abroad to help Nigeria. Personally, i do not support the so called #5000 stipend, because it has absolutely nothing to contribute to our developemt. We must look beyond giving our children in public schools 3square meal. We must seriously encourage team research. Invest heavely in our scientists and engineers. We have to stop praying for Nigeria, but ask the government to do the needful. Nations develop by strategy and plan and not by prayer. Ochuba Polycarp #trying to see things differently# |

Critique of Ben Murry Bruce's book tittled "Commonsense Revolution" By Ochuba Chichebe. Though Ben was good enough to outlined the numerous problems facing Nigeria, and patriotic enough to have offered some solutions. But he was quick enough to blame Nigerians and the government for these problems. The summary of Commonsense Revolution was a pinpoint of our problems, failures and corrective messures to be taken. My initial expectation was to see a dramatic and systematic step towards surmounting our foundational challenges. In other words, the book is an articulation of what ought to be, rather than what is. This is to say that, is highly idealistic and apologetic. Though there are some elements of objectivity when he deployed comparative analysis. But this scientific gesture did not conform with some of his anaysis. In other words, there is a problem of coherence which made it illogical. I therefore, with the following points, see it as an expression of views rather than reality: Having made tribalism and ethnicity the major bane of Nigerian development. Having as well, criticised and blamed Nigerians and the government for banes, by taking preference of federal character principle and regionalism in allocation of national cake against merit and capability. Ben bluntly refused to take notice of the nature and character of the Nigerian state. Scientifically, you dont make prediction when you have not established any correlation. So if you want to blame Nigerians, you must first establish the foundational relationship between the so called Nigerian state and her citizens? Is Ben oblivious of the history of this country? Did he not know that there was at no point these people he accused of being tribal agreed to live as brothers and sisters? Or is Ben not aware that a large number of Nigerians do not believe in the so called 1999 constitution imposed on them? I was even more shocked when Ben said there was nothing like tribalism in the post-independence era. Is either that Ben lacked full knowledge of history, or he was pushed to decieving many of us that are yet to read history into believing that post-independence was without tribalism. One of our forefathers which Ben decribed as the best president Nigeria never had (Chief Awolowo) onces said "Nigeria is mere geographical expression" Is it not yet time for us to address that phrase? Or should will continue to pretend as Ben has suggested? Is not good enough for him to condemn anybody without asking the Nigerian govt. to do the needful. On this issue, i conclude that Ben only admonished Nigerians to forget who they are and accept who they are not. Ben also spoke about underdevelopment (though he did not use the word underdevelopment) and accredited it to corruption, mismanagement, lack of patriotism, and the principle of going to Abuja to share the national cake. Well, i agree with him that Nigeria is underdeveloped. But disgree with his causes . All those things mentioned above are just peripheries. The core cause lies with the political structure of the state. Federalism and capitalism are not our ideologies, so if we must practice them, we must do it strictly on the basis of their orgins (USA). In USA, where Ben had his education, the constituent states control their resources and pay tax to the centre. Local governments are autonomous and cause grassroot development. Is Nigerian federalism the same? The center is the super power which contravened the principle of federalism by K.C Whare. I had expected Ben Bruce to ask the Nigerian state to go back to what many described as true federalism and not asking us to be patriotic. Problems are solved systematically and not by mere wishes. Addressing the problem of youths, Ben, no doubt made some good suggestions, especially the fact he admitted that the youths are the most valuable resources Nigeria has, and therefore must be accorded number one priority. In this regard, Ben was more of hypocritical than realistic as demostrated at his 60th birthday where he treated the Nigerian youths/students as second class citizens. This was in total contradiction of his doctrine. About the third alternative to APC and PDP, which he described as "patriotism" Ben was being economical with the truth. The truth remains that an average Nigerian youth prefer to be loyal to his primodial state to the Nigerian state. Because they do not believe in the state called Nigeria. In general and in conclusion, though, there are some commonsense in the Commonsense Revolution, but Ben should have known that the solution to Nigeria's problems does not lies in the Commonsense Revolution in his perspective of commonsense, but in the foundation of the state. We must take a critical look of our foundation. "Nigeria is a mere geographical expression" said one of Nigerian philosopher. Lastly, i will suggest that Ben Murry Bruce to find a book tittled: "The two Publics" by Peter Ekeh. This book captured clearly, the root cause of Nigeria problems and offered systematic solution. The book is more of scientific. My name is Ochuba Chichebe #Trying to see things differently# |
