Many people were feared dead on Thursday in a fresh attack by Boko Haram Islamists in Ghumbili community in the Madagali Local Government Area of Adamawa.

The attack comes a few days after a similar incident in a neighbouring village in the Local Government, known as Mildu, where seven people were killed by the insurgents.

Confirming the attack, the Chairman of Madagali Local Government Council, Yusuf Muhammed, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the attack lasted from 11 p.m. on Wednesday to 3 a.m. on Thursday.

He said that the jihadists burnt no fewer than 60 houses and looted foodstuff.

“They looted foodstuff, killed livestock and burnt the village completely,” he stated.

Mr. Muhammed said that the exact number of dead and injured people had yet to be ascertained and that villagers who escaped the attack were currently taking refuge at Gulak, the headquarters of the council.

But the Spokesman of the Police Command in Adamawa, Othman Abubakar, who also confirmed the attack, said no life was lost.

He said, however, that houses were destroyed in the attack–the latest in a string of deadly blows on mainly soft targets in Nigeria’s troubled northeast.


Speaking on the development, the Executive Chairman of the Adamawa State Emergency Management Agency, Haruna Furo, said only one person was killed and that many houses were destroyed.

Boko Haram appears to have raised its onslaught in recent weeks in its eight-year bloody insurgency that has claimed thousands of lives.

Forty-eight corpses of persons killed by Boko Haram insurgents during an oil exploration to the Lake Chad Basin have been brought to the Maiduguri Teaching Hospital in the Borno State capital.

Sources at the UMTH and the Maimalari Army Barrack told The PUNCH that the corpses were brought into Maiduguri from the scene of the attack.

The corpses brought include 18 soldiers, 15 Civilian JTF, five university staff and four NNPC drivers.



Also six persons who were wounded in the attack but escaped to somewhere in Yobe State were later found dead and brought to Maiduguri.

Apart from the wounded soldiers admitted to military hospital in the town, two members of the Civilian JTF were as at Thursday on admission at the UMTH.

The Army, in a press statement on Wednesday by it’s spokesman, Brig. Gen. Sani Usman, had claimed that all the NNPC staff abducted in the Tuesday’s ambush had been rescued.

Usman, in the statement, said: “On receipt of the information, the Brigade mobilized and sent reinforcement, search and rescue party that include the Armed Forces Special Forces and guides that worked and pursued the terrorists throughout the night.

“So far, they have rescued all the NNPC staff and recovered the corpses of the Officer, 8 soldiers and a civilian who have been evacuated to 7 Division Medical Services and Hospital.

“The team recovered 4 vehicles one of which include a gun truck mounted with an Anti-Aircraft Gun, 2 white Hilux taken away from NNPC staff and 1 blue Hilux belonging to CJTF. The team also recovered large quantities of arms and ammunition, several spare tyres, many jerry cans of containing Petroleum, Oil and Lubricant, assorted drugs, Improvised Explosive Device (IED) making materials, reflective jackets and a Motorola handheld radio, among others. The team also neutralized many of the terrorists.”

But investigations by our correspondent revealed that five lecturers from the University of Maiduguri in the exploration team were killed.

Names of three of the lost were given as Dr. Joseph Millitus, Dr. Manaja Uba and Idris Njodi.

A family of one of the deceased (Dr. Joseph Millitus), Daniel Millitus told our correspondent that the family was still in grief over the lost of one of the rising stars of the family.

Daniel Millitus, who is a pastor in one of the parishes of Redeemed Christian Church of God in Maiduguri, said the family is making arrangements for the burial of their son.

Another relative of a slain lecturer (Dr. Manaja Uba), said the family was still in shock and found it difficult to believe that “Manaja was no more.”

She lamented that another relative (Yusuf Ibrahim) also in the exploration team is still missing.

When contacted on phone by journalists, the spokesman of the University of Maiduguri, Professor Danjuma Gambo, said, he was in Abuja and, therefore, has limited access to information on happenings at the institution.

He, however, promised to get more information on the claims as soon as he gets back on campus from Abuja.

The Deputy Director Army Public Relations, Col. Kingsley Samuel, when contacted on the matter, said it was not within the purview of the 7 Division where he is the spokesman.

He asked that: “You have to get in contact with Abuja on this, as I have no available information. It is under the 8 division.”

In a video obtained exclusively by Sahara Reporters through salkida.com, the Abubakar Shekau faction of the dreaded Islamist terror group, Boko Haram, recorded dozens of its fighters driving into Maiduguri, capital of Borno State, in military painted trucks with little opposition from the military. 


In the first 23 minutes, the video shows the Islamist insurgents’ attack on Maiduguri, displaying uniforms, shoes, ID cards, arms and ammunition the group claimed their fighters seized from the military during the attack.

The mercurial Shekau, who remains alive despite several claims by the Nigerian military that he had been killed in operations, appears in the middle of the video. Speaking in Arabic and Kanuri, he repeats some of the earlier claims by his commander, who spoke in Hausa. According to him, “It is not true that all the attackers were killed in Maiduguri on that fateful night. It is not true that we were overcome during the attack. The battle in Maiduguri was successful,” he says.

Remarkably, unlike in the past year where his video appearances were recorded indoors, the latest video features Mr. Shekau outdoors in an open field flanked by armed militants in front of armored tanks and trucks mounted with anti-aircraft machine guns.

The factional leader of Boko Haram reiterated his group's determination to fight on, adding that there was no room for any dialogue. He cited Somalia, Afghanistan, and Syria where Islamist groups have waged longstanding wars. Mr. Shekau rebuked those who have been claiming that the Islamist group’s war around Lake Chad was over. “Our kids and grandchildren will continue from where we stopped,” he vowed.

By Emman Ovuakporie ABUJA— The House of Representatives Committee on Public Procurement, yesterday, vowed to unveil owners of the five-day old company, which got contract for deployment of revenue monitoring solutions on telecommunication companies from Federal Inland Revenue Service, FIRS. The committee also had to adjourn hearing as the Chairman of Federal Inland Revenue Service, FIRS, Babatunde Fowler, and other key stakeholders failed to show up at the venue. Oluwole Oke, chairman of the committee, who revealed this at the opening of the investigative public hearing, however, expressed displeasure over the failure of Babatunde Fowler, FIRS Chairman; Ifueko Omogui Okauru, former FIRS chairman; Joseph Ari, Director General of Industrial Training Fund (ITF) and management team of National Pension Commission, PenCom, and Corporate Affairs Commission, CAC, to honour the invitation of the committee. The documents obtained by the House, showed that the Certificate of Incorporation issued by Corporate Affairs Commission, CAC, showed that the company was registered on the December 2, 2016, while FIRS awarded the contract on December 7, 2016. The petitioners further alleged that FIRS breached Section 6(3) of the Industrial Training Fund (ITF) Act 2011 and relevant Procurement laws. During the hearing, the lawmakers chided FIRS chairman for failing to provide relevant documents on the FIRS Procurement documents from 2016 to 2017 under his purview. Two former FIRS chairmen who appeared before the committee are Kabir Mashi and S. S. Ogungbesan Sponsor of the motion, Onyema Chukwuka, had expressed displeasure over the award of the “contract to ASISL notwithstanding the fact that the company was incorporated at the Corporate Affairs Commission on 2 December, 2016, just two working days before the award was made.” According to him, this is indicative of the fact that the provisions of the Public Procurement Act, 2007 and other subsidiary legislation were not complied with. He explained that the FIRS recently engaged the services of 100 tax consultants to conduct tax audit and assessment on companies in Lagos, Abuja and Port-Harcourt but noted that  the engagement process was not made public and not competitive as required by law. In his opening speech, Speaker of the House, Yakubu Dogara, who was represented by the Minority Leader, Leo Ogor, frowned on the spate of breaches. Dogara said:  ‘’All procurements of agencies of government for goods, works and services are subjected to various processes and criteria as stipulated in the Public Procurement Act, 2007 which was enacted to curb excesses found in the award and execution of government’s contracts. “More importantly, this law was enacted with the aim of checkmating corruption and procurement irregularities, thus ensuring that government obtains value for money and by extension, enhance the fight against corruption. “The Federal Inland Revenue Service is an agency of government saddled with the responsibility of delivering quality service to tax payers, in partnership with other stakeholders. The agency is also expected to operate a transparent and efficient tax system that optimizes tax revenue collection and voluntary compliance that enhances the revenue of government. “Instances and allegations of abuse, disregard, breach and violation of the provisions of this law in whatever form should be investigated.’’ While urging all the stakeholders invited to make suggestions, contributions and constructive criticism on the subject of the investigation, Dogara urged the committee to look into all the submissions and positions presented critically, thoroughly and dispassionately in order to ensure a meticulous investigation. In his ruling, Oke, who presided over the session, directed CAC, ITF, PenCom, and other regulatory agencies to provide relevant documents, requested for Certificate of Registration and Incorporation, evidence of tax payment among others, of the beneficiary companies for verification on June 6 2017, when the investigative hearing would continue.
