http://www.punchng.com/news/bombs-rock-three-rivers-courts-jusun-suspends-strike/Barely 48 hours after the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria declared the suspension of the eight-month-old strike in Rivers State, unknown persons have bombed three separate High Courts in Degema, Isiokpo and Port Harcourt areas of the state. The incidents were coordinated and happened almost simultaneously in the wee hours of Monday, just as the State Police Command confirmed that minimal damages were recorded and no life was lost. It was gathered that one of the courts in Degema was completely razed by unidentified arsonists with many documents burnt beyond recognition. Two courts in the state were attacked before the judiciary workers embarked on strike on June 10, 2014. Details later… |

The Federal Government officially reacted on Thursday to the war threat by ex- Niger Delta militants, saying it was reprehensible. The condemnation came barely a day after a former Minister of Defence, Lt.Gen. Theophilus Danjuma, called for their arrest and seven days after the ex-militants made the threat at the Government House in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State. The ex-militants – Mujahiden Dokubo-Asari, Government Ekpemupolo (aka Tompolo), Victor Ebikabowei (aka Boyloaf) and others – had at the end of a meeting attended by Bayelsa State Governor Seriake Dickson, said, “For every Goliath, God created a David. For every Pharaoh, there is a Moses. We are going to war. Every one of you should go and fortify yourself.” But as the Federal Government, through the Minister of Interior, Abba Moro, cautioned against inflammatory remarks, unrepentant Ekpemupolo, said Danjuma was the one that should be arrested by security operatives. The minister, at a news conference in Abuja, said that there was no basis for the ex-militants to be beating war drums since President Goodluck Jonathan had said he would concede defeat if he lost the February 14 presidential election. He said, “It is reprehensible for people to threaten this country with mayhem should their candidate lose the election . The President, Dr. Jonathan, has not left anybody in doubt as to his preparedness to conduct a free, fair, credible and transparent election. “Mr. President has said that in the unlikely event of his losing the election, in the course of this exercise, that he was straight man enough, he was democratic enough to concede defeat. “So, if Mr. President himself, who is the main contestant, who is the President of this country, who is the leader of the PDP(Peoples Democratic Party) has come out to say that he was going to ensure free and fair elections where the choice of Nigerians would be respected, I do not see where statements from supporters of either Mr. President or any political party for that matter should derail the course of this democratic movement.” The minister, who said that the anxiety over the elections was unwarranted, stressed that the Federal Government was determined to conduct hitch-free elections. He added that security agencies had been sufficiently mobilised for the elections. Shortly after Moro spoke, Ekpemupolo, in a statement by his Media Adviser, Paul Bebenimibo, wondered why Danjuma, who did not condemn the stoning of Jonathan’s convoy in Katsina and Bauchi states, would want them arrested. He asked, “Is Gen. Danjuma not aware of the peaceful atmosphere when Gen. Buhari visited Delta, Rivers and Bayelsa states for campaign? Why is it that President Jonathan’s convoy was attacked in Kastina and Bauchi states without any provocation? “Where was this so-called statesman when the APC campaign Director General, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, threatened to form a parallel government if Jonathan wins the 2015 elections?” Ekpemupolo said that Danjuma should be reminded that the treaty that brought the Southern and Northern Protectorates together in 1914, expired last year.http://www.punchng.com/news/dokubo-tompolos-war-threat-unacceptable-fg/ |

The All Progressives Congress governorship candidate in Kaduna State, Malam Nasir el-Rufai, said the presidential candidate of the APC, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari(retd.), will inherit a sick economy when elected as President in the February. El-Rufai noted that he would inherit a bankrupt state if eventually elected as the chief executive officer of Kaduna State in the February 28 poll. The former minister of the Federal Capital Territory spoke at an Organised Private Sector interactive session on Tuesday in Kaduna. He said the state was reeling under domestic liabilities totalling N106bn owed to various sources. He argued that most of the money received or generated is used to settle debts, adding that about N700bn was wasted in the past seven years in the state, a situation he described as most “unfortunate.” El-Rufai noted that the nation was presently passing through an economic crisis as it was in 1983. “General Muhammadu Buhari will be inheriting a broken economy like he did in 1983, just like I am going to likely inherit a bankrupt state when we take over power,” he said. Speaking on his manifesto, the governorship candidate said if elected into office in February, he would, among other things, develop human capital, ensure a free and compulsory education for the first nine years for all children in the state as well as fix schools and improve on teachers training. He said he would ensure that the salary of teachers were higher than any civil servants in the state’s workforce. Other area that would receive his attention, el-Rufai said, was the security of lives and property of the people of the state. He emphasised on the need to support security agencies, improve intelligence gathering and above all, to improve governance and tackle corruption in the state.http://www.punchng.com/news/buhari-will-inherit-a-sick-economy-says-el-rufai/ |
The ranks of the Peoples Democratic Party in the House of Representatives further depleted on Wednesday as eight more members defected from the majority party. Four of the defectors joined the rival All Progressives Congress, giving indications that the leading opposition party had gained the control of the House as the majority party. The All Progressives Grand Alliance gained two of the defectors, while the Peoples Democratic Movement and the Social Democratic Party each gained one, bringing to eight the total PDP defectors on Wednesday. All the defected legislators either cited dissatisfaction with the conduct of the party’s last primaries or divisions in its fold as reasons for their decision to abandon the PDP. The four who defected to the APC were Garba Ulma, Zakari Ibrahim, Ibrahim Kamba and Abdulmalik Cheche. Wilson Nathaniel joined the SDP, while Tony Madwatte and Nwogbo defected to PDM and APGA respectively. Another member, Mr. Benjamin Aboho, defected to APGA, while Mr. Forte Dike left APGA for the APC. Deputy Chairman, House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Mr. Victor Ogene, also made his defection from APGA to the APC official on Wednesday. By Ogene’s defection, both the chairman of the House committee on Media and Public Affairs, Mr. Zakari Mohammed, and his deputy are now members of the APC. The APC alone gained six out of the total of 10 lawmakers who changed political parties on Wednesday. A National Assembly official toldThe PUNCHthat the series of defections hitting the PDP lately had raised the numerical strength of the APC to 179 members, giving it the upper hand over the former. The official said, “As it stands today, the APC has taken over as the majority party. There are now 179 APC members, while PDP has 162. The small parties together have 19 members. “Ten of the members belong to the SDP.” WhenThe PUNCHsought the reaction of the Deputy House Majority Leader, Mr. Leo Ogor, he neither denied nor confirmed the figures. Ogor merely described the loss of his party’s membership as “inconsequential.” He reminded our correspondent that the issue of defections in the House was still before the courts. “This issue is inconsequential because the PDP is clearly in control. The courts have said status quo should remain. “So, we are not bothered as we are in control. Even if it is only Leo Ogor who remains in the PDP, we are in control, so long as the courts have not decided on the issue of defections”, he said. The SDP has jumped to the third largest party in the House with 10 members. Labour Party has about three members, APGA has three, PDM has two members and Accord Party, one.http://www.punchng.com/news/apc-regains-house-majority-as-pdp-loses-8-reps/ |
Buhari Spent Only Two To Three Years As Head Of State And He Performed More Than You Who Has Spent Almost Six Years And Failed Unconditionally! |
President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday said the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) had his chance as military head of state but failed to transform the country. Jonathan therefore asked Nigerians not to allow Buhari to come back to power by stopping him from winning the February 14 presidential election. The President, who spoke in Osogbo, capital of Osun State, at the presidential campaign of the Peoples Democratic Party said that Buhari would unleash more hardship and unnecessary punishment on Nigerians if he won the poll. He said Buhari had the opportunity to ensure an effective mass transit system in the country but he did not do anything about it. He said, “We have done reasonably well despite the challenges before us. All of you saw the train that just passed through this place now. We promised to resuscitate railway and we did it. All of you saw the train; we can even end the campaign with that. “Those who have the opportunity to do it but did not do anything about it and they want to come back now. Don’t allow them. Mass transit cannot work by using small buses, you need train which will be cheaper.” The President said that his administration was planning the railway line that would link Lagos State with the eastern part of the nation to make transportation of people and goods safer and cheaper. Jonathan said that the Federal Government was also working on Ilesa Dam and Ife Dam and that he would do more if he given the opportunity to steer the ship of the nation for another four years. He thanked the people of Osun State for the support they showed him in the 2011 presidential election while asking the people to show him and the PDP candidates much more support in the 2015 poll. While further enumerating the achievements of his administration, he said that higher institutions in the state and in other states had been equipped through the Tertiary Education Trust Fund. The President said that his administration had been working hard to tackle the problem of insecurity created by the insurgents, saying the problem would soon be over. “We will win the war against terror very soon; terror cannot continue forever. In the next administration terror attacks will be minimal.” he said.http://www.punchng.com/news/buhari-had-his-chance-but-failed-says-jonathan/ |

In 2011, Nigeria under Jonathan made a similar and even worse foreign policy blunder that had implications in the escalation of the domestic terror attacks. The African Union had taken steps to find a negotiated settlement to the then festering crisis between the Benghazi-based opposition Transitional National Council and the Libyan government of Muammar Gaddaffi. The opposition TNC clearly backed by the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation with air cover and generous supply of equipment from NATO was desperately moving to secure a military victory. Most of Africa, especially South Africa, seemed to understand the far-reaching implications of a NATO-backed military victory for the insurgents and stuck to the gun of a negotiated settlement. President Jonathan broke away from the emerging African consensus on a negotiated settlement and became the first African country of significance to recognise the NATO backed TNC in Libya. With NATO generous air campaign, the Gaddaffi regime was violently overthrown and with the country thrown into chaos, the well supplied armoury was thrown open. The formerly ragtag Boko Haram extremists and other insurgents in the sub-region laid their hands on the sophisticated weapons from the Libyan armoury with a consequence for escalation of the insurgents’ activities both in Nigeria and the West African subregion. Since then, the terrorists in Nigeria have increased in their capabilities and their weapons have become more sophisticated. The destabilisation of Libya directly fed to the growing insurgency in Nigeria and the Jonathan administration is reasonably complicit in the act and its consequences of the thriving terrorist activities both in Nigeria and the sub-region. |
http://www.punchng.com/opinion/implications-of-nigerias-abstention-on-palestinian-vote/In what Thisday newspaper called “pivotal foreign policy shift”, Nigeria’s foreign policy actually took a dramatic plunge to new lows, when on December 29, 2014, the country abstained from a vote at the United Nations Security Council that would have set a definite timeframe for the end of Israeli occupation of the Palestinian land. For sure, the United States of America would have exercised her veto to shot down the resolution, even if Nigeria had voted for it but at least, we would have been true to our fundamental principle of long-standing aversion to any form of colonisation, land grab and racial discrimination which have been the primary bases for Nigeria’s stance on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. Credible reports have it that Nigeria’s foreign affairs ministry was fully geared to exercise the country’s traditional vote in favour of the resolution for a time-table to end Israeli occupation of Palestinian lands until the Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, placed a direct call to President Goodluck Jonathan. The call evidently threw the country’s foreign policy machinery into disarray, with explicit instructions for Nigeria’s permanent delegation in the UN to vote against the resolution or at best refrain from any voting at all. And with Nigeria’s abstention, the resolution fell apart, after falling short of Nigeria’s one vote to sail through, though with only a potential Washington veto to thwart it, had we voted for the resolution. Even reports said that the Israeli foreign ministry was pleasantly surprised at Nigeria’s last minute abstention, as they expected a yes-vote to the resolution. The Palestinians were shocked beyond words. Their ambassador to Nigeria, Dr Montazer Abu-Zeid, captured the mood of his people when he told reporters that, “It is a shock for us, why they (Nigeria) abstained. It was a surprise because the ministry of foreign affairs informed me that they would vote for us and I have informed my president and foreign minister as they assured me they would vote for an end to the occupation”. Further ruminating on Nigeria’s volte-face, the Palestinian envoy said: “It is a sad day for us. Nigeria has recognised the state of Palestine since 1988 when it was even difficult times. They voted for the two state solutions; they voted for us on all issues on Israel and Palestine. Nigeria has been a big brother to us but at this crucial time, to vote to end the occupation, they abstained.” However, it should be made clear, that Nigeria’s traditional pro-Palestine stance is not derived from unqualified support for the Palestinians or any subsisting antipathy to the Israelis but from a principled stance with explicit commitment of Nigeria’s foreign policy to oppose any form of colonisation and racial discrimination. There is no other way to describe Israeli seizure of Palestinian lands than colonial occupation. Based on this principle, Nigeria recognised the Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic which also operates a mission in Abuja. It is thus a pity that with just a phone call, from the Israeli prime minister, President Jonathan destroyed one of the core and enduring principles of Nigeria’s foreign policy. |
President Goodluck Jonathan Campaign Organisation has said there is no evidence linking a former Head of State who is also the Presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari(retd.), with the Boko Haram sect. The spokesperson for the organisation, Chief Femi Fanikayode, stated this at the maiden press briefing of the organisation in Abuja on Wednesday. But he said that because of the alleged anger shown by the APC when the sect was proscribed by the Federal Government, the APC might be in support of the group.http://www.punchng.com/news/no-link-between-buhari-boko-haram-jonathan-campaign-group/ |
Nigeria Cannot Afford To Spend Another Four Years Under Jonadahft, No Court Will Want To Disqualify The President Of Nigeria In Waiting! |
The Independent National Electoral Commission on Saturday said only the courts could disqualify a former Head of State and Presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), ahead of the 2015 general elections. The commission, which said there was nothing it could do in the matter, also said it had not received any petition against President Goodluck Jonathan of the Peoples Democratic Party, Buhari and other presidential candidates, more than seven days after displaying their particulars. The Director of Voter Education and Publicity in INEC, Mr. Oluwole Osaze-Uzzi, in an interview with our correspondent, said the commission could not go beyond its constitutional powers. “What do you want INEC to do? INEC cannot disqualify anybody and there is nothing we can do. We don’t have any power to disqualify him.He didn’t bring it (certificates) and so there is nothing INEC can do. INEC cannot disqualify him and cannot remove his name. It is only the courts that can disqualify him, if they feel there is something wrong that he has done. I am not aware of any (petition); none that I am aware of for now. I am not aware of any (petition). I am not aware of any so far,” Osaze-Uzzi said. Buhari had in an affidavit which he deposed to at a High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, explained that all his academic credentials were with the Secretary, Military Board. The affidavit deposed to at the FCT High Court and dated November 24, 2014, was stamped and received by INEC on December 18, 2014. “All my academic qualifications documents as filled in my presidential form, President APC/001/2015 are currently with the Secretary, Military Board as of the time of this affidavit. The affidavit is made in good faith and for record purpose”, Buhari stated. The Nigerian Army had said it would readily release credentials and certificates in its custody to serving and retired officers whenever they apply for it. The Director, Army Public Relations, Brig.-Gen. Olajide Laleye, had while reacting to Buhari’s claim in his affidavit, said that his credentials were with the military. He said the procedure for the retrieval or collection of the certificates was known to all serving or retired officers of the military. He said, “Every serving and retired Army officer has, at least, a copy of his certificates and credentials kept with the Nigerian Army while that same serving and retired officer has copies of those same certificates and credentials. “And there is a laid-down procedure to request for certificates. It is known to any serving and retired officer. If you want anything checked in your file, you simply follow the due process and it would be given to you because the credentials belong to you.” “The Nigerian Army does not refuse to give anybody his credentials if the due process is followed. Now, take note of this. Not only does the Nigerian Army keep these things, the individual officers, whether serving or retired, have copies.” Also speaking, the Chief Press Secretary to INEC Chairman, Mr. Kayode Idowu, said he was not aware of any petition against any of the presidential candidates.http://www.punchng.com/news/only-court-can-disqualify-buhari-inec/ |
Adamu Muazu is an unrepentant Islamist. At least 30 Christians were killed during a June 2001 outbreak of violence between Muslims and Christians in the Tafawa Balewa and Bogoro areas of northern Nigeria's Bauchi state. More than 158 Christian-owned houses were burned, along with two churches and a Bible school belonging to the Church of Christ in Nigeria, according to a statement signed by four leaders of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN). by Bunmi AwoyemiJan 02, 2015 Adamu Muazu the PDP National Chairman is an Islamist and unrepentant sharia advocate who ordered the slaughtering of Christians as Bauchi state Governor in 2001. The current PDP Chairman, Adamu Muazu as Governor of Bauchi state adopted sharia law as part of the law of Bauchi state and signed it into law in 2001. Buhari as former military Head of State with immense power did not adopt Sharia law as national law, he also refused to register Nigeria as a member of the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC). It was IBB that later registered Nigeria as a member of the OIC after his successful palace coup against Buhari. Adamu Mu'azu The religious clashes began on June 18, 2001, after Bauchi Governor Alhaji Ahmed Adamu Muazu declared on June 1 that Islamic (sharia) law applied to all persons in the state, not Muslims only. On June 4, Muazu assigned an Islamic court judge to Tafawa Balewa and Bogoro Local Government Areas to enforce Islamic law in the predominantly Christian villages. The four Christian leaders, Rev. Markus Musa, Rev. Canon H.A. Eluwa, Michael Lulu and Yunusa Manzo, accused the governor of masterminding the Christian killings. "He knew well that Christians were slaughtered at a roadblock at Zwall and Burgel villages by Muslim jihadists. Yet, to date he did nothing about it," the Christian leaders claimed. "The fact that Governor Ahmed Adamu Muazu, as the chief security officer in the state, did nothing to prevent the slaughtering of the Christians at those roadblocks means that he actually helped in the planning and execution of the jihad against the Christians in Bauchi state," the Christian leaders concluded. Recently, President Jonathan despite the false accusation of his campaign team against Buhari, attended an OIC meeting and this is the first time this is happening in 15 years. This evinces the fact that President Jonathan and his handlers are award winning liars who are extremely desperate for power. Based on the foregoing it is becoming increasingly clear that the long-standing allegations against Buhari that he is a Sharia advocate and Islamist is diversionary, wicked and hypocritical. It is the PDP as exemplified by its Chairman Adamu Muazu that not only advocated that Sharia be widely adopted in Nigeria but also adopted and enforced Sharia law. A speaker from Osun State that he had told Gov. Mimiko to help them tell the President to use his power and office to quash Ogbeni Aregbesola before the general elections, so that PDP could produce more votes for the President and that the idea of fighting Gov. Aregbesola would be by going to the Court of Appeal which he said could be influenced to remove Aregbesola. So, he urged the honourable leaders of our amiable party to look into the issue of Osun State. Discussions now moved on to the strategy that would be used for winning the presidential election; • Delegates present at the meeting discussed more on campaign that they should do less of rallies, instead, they should embark on full campaign with propaganda that would tarnish the image of APC presidential candidate, Gen. Buhari. And part of what should be used use to campaign against Gen. Buhari in Lagos is that he was the one who stopped the Railway metro project of Lagos State 30 years ago, and that instead of Buhari completing the project, he paid the penalty for breaching the contract of the railway metro line project. • Delegates present laid serious emphasis on using the media to dent the image of the presidential candidate of APC. Some delegates maintained that the change that the emperor of Bourdillon wanted to change Nig. democracy to totalitarian dictatorship. Members stated that when PDP had no State in the South-west, the President got good votes from the South-west and now that the party has two States, it would be able to win all the other States if the two States in its kitty are well utilised. Senator Omisore said in his speech that propaganda of any form shoule be utilised and that all efforts should be mobilized to win the Presidency as without the presidency the party is nothing. In the speech of Mr. Ayo Fayose, he said propaganda would only waste time and that attack is the best from of defence. He maintained that the party in general and the South-west PDP needed to be valiant to face the Tinubus anywhere they are. He further said we have the control of police and the army and “I CAN NOT AFFORD TO LOSE MY CONTROL ON POLICE AND THE ARMY” and without Jonathan being the president we will lose the control. Further, he said the presidential election is a do or die affair but Gov. Mimiko quickly countered that it should not be a do or die affair but rather a do- and-win affair. Governor Fayose later said they should forget about all governorship elections and concentrate on the presidential election, that once President Jonathan returns, we could be declaring the governorship candidates of PDP in various States as they like, meaning that the Presidential election is very paramount. As the meeting progressed, leaders at the meeting put Oyo State in focus and maintained that PDP could get more votes for the president there by begging both Chief Alao Akala and Chief Rasheed Ladoja to align their parties with the PDP since they have no presidential aspirant and there is every need to throw out Ajimobi, Amosun with using militant thugs loyal to PDP. Mr. Kolapo Ogunjobi representing Otunba Gbenga Daniel said they PDP on ground in Ijebu side of Ogun State and they were grassrooters and that they could deliver with good resources. Sen. Musilu Obanikoro in his own speech said 3 days after he lost the PDP primary election, that Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu came to him in private which he said was quite unusual of him. He said Tinubu asked him how much he had spent and that he was ready to give him 2 billion Naira and a senatorial seat from APC in Lagos State. He said he refused the offer and stressed that they could just imagine how smart and clever Asiwaju is. He further stated that Cardinal James Odunmbaku (Baba Eto) was almost at the concluding part of decamping to PDP and that even he had even concluded with the presidency in Aso Rock before Asiwaju hijacked him back with the position of Director- General of Campaign of Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode. He said they could see that Tinubu is the smart type. Senator Obanikoro further said he was the only person that could match Bola Ahmed Tinubu because he said he knew his tactics. He further emphasized that with cash in his hand, Tinubu is nobody. |
http://saharareporters.com/2015/01/02/governor-fayose-explodes-presidential-contest-do-or-die-affair-advocates-use-policearmy An inaugural meeting of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Southwest was held in Akure on Saturday with the objective of outlining a strategy for winning the 2015 elections in the area, with Ekiti State governor Ayo Fayose reiterating the party’s old mantra that the presidential contest is a “do or die” affair. Ayodele Fayose The returnee-governor said the party must be prepared to use its control of the army and the police, which it currently controls, to ensure victory for President Goodluck Jonathan at next month’s polls. The meeting was organized by the PDP South-West co- ordinator, Gov. Olusegun Mimiko, who shared the high table with Senitor Iyiola Omisore, Mr. Kolapo Ogunjobi, Senator Musilu Obanikoro, Governor Ayo Fayose and various leaders from the zone. Governor Fayose underlined that the presidential election was critical, advising that the party should forget about governorship elections and concentrate on the presidential contest. According to him, once President Jonathan was re-elected, everything else would fall into place and the party could declare the governorship candidates of PDP in various States as it likes. Minutes of the meeting obtained by SaharaReporters shows that some delegates advocated de- emphasizing rallies as campaign strategy, preferring that the PDP should focus on propaganda aimed at tarnishing the image of the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, General Muhammadu Buhari. Some of the delegates wanted to use the media to dent the image of General Buhari. In that connection, Senator Omisore expressed support for the extensive use of propaganda against Buhari, joining Governor Fayose in stressing that the all efforts should be mobilized to win the Presidency because the PDP would be nothing without the presidency. Mr. Fayose disagreed with the propaganda strategy, describing it as a waste of time. Stressing that attack is the best form of defence, he said that the PDP in general and the South-west PDP should be valiant to face the Tinubus anywhere they are. He underlined that the PDP cannot afford to lose its control of the police and the army, which it will without Jonathan being the president. On Fayose’s description of the presidential election as a “do or die” affair, Gov. Mimiko, obviously aware that the outburst could be used against the PDP, countered that it should not be a “do or die” but rather a “do-and-win” affair. One of the decisions taken by the meeting was to set up a number of committees, including Security, Contacts, Traditional, and INEC. The committee on Security is saddled with the responsibility of working with the police and the army. The party leaders also further tasked the students at both the national and regional levels to monitor various institutions and polling booths to make sure that the election goes in favour of President Jonathan. It was also stated that a national student body had submitted a proposal for a youth conference that will hold in FUTA this month where the South-west students would adopt Jonathan as their presidential candidate. |
President Goodluck Jonathan has vowed to deal decisively with anyone who may decide to foment trouble before, during and after the 2015 general elections. He said he would wield the big stick against troublemakers because of the post-2011 elections violence that erupted in some parts of the country. Jonathan read the Riot Act in his New Year message broadcast on radio and television networks early on Thursday morning. He said his administration would not tolerate a repeat of the 2011 orgy of violence. “After the 2011 general elections, some unpatriotic elements embarked on an orgy of violence, resulting in the destruction of lives and property. That will not be allowed to happen this time around. This government will act decisively against anyone who disrupts the public peace, before, during or after the 2015 general elections,” the President declared. Jonathan observed that the general elections were important for the country, saying their successful conclusion would further strengthen Nigeria’s democratic institutions and place it more firmly in the comity of truly democratic nations. He said given the challenges that had characterised some previous electoral contests in the country, the eyes of the world would be on the conduct and outcome of what he described as the nation’s fifth post-military rule general elections. He reassured Nigerians and the international community of his administration’s commitment to free, fair and credible elections. The President added, “My commitment to free elections and one man, one vote remains unwavering. Our administration has worked hard in previous elections to prepare all key stakeholders including the Independent National Electoral Commission, security agencies and the electorate optimally, to ensure a progressively improved electoral process in the country under my watch. We will continue to do so for the coming elections. “We will continue to provide adequate funding to INEC and maintain the commission’s independence and isolate it from any form of interference or meddling in its day-to-day affairs. This shall continue to guarantee its impartiality and ability to conduct more credible and acceptable elections. “The national security agencies will also be given all necessary support to enhance their ability to ensure that the elections are peaceful and violence-free.” Jonathan reiterated his position that no political ambition was worth the blood of any Nigerian. He urged politicians, as they carry out their campaigns, not to promote sectionalism, disunity or hate. Jonathan further advised them to conduct their campaigns with decorum and civility towards opponents. “Let us not promote sectionalism, disunity, intolerance, hate, falsehood or the malicious abuse of political opponents. Whatever we feel or seek, we must have a nation and a people before we can dream of political ambitions. Let us put the nation and the people first. “Let us all conduct our electoral campaigns with the highest possible decorum and civility towards political opponents. Let us give INEC the fullest possible support and cooperation it requires to conduct credible and violence-free elections in 2015,” the President added. He said all Nigerians of voting age were free to vote during the elections based on their convictions. Jonathan also assured Nigerians that political campaigns and the general elections would not distract his administration from its ongoing efforts to improve their living conditions. He promised that his involvement in the campaigns and election as the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party notwithstanding, he would remain focused on providing good governance and delivering better public services to Nigerians. He said, “Being very conscious of the inherent perils of our over-reliance on income from crude oil exports for national development, we have focused on accelerating the diversification of our economy. “The non-oil sector, which has grown by an average of eight per cent in the last few years, is now a major driver of growth in our economy. “The 2015 national budget, which is now before the National Assembly, is targeted at deepening our efforts at becoming a non-oil economy. “The budget also includes measures to ensure that the downturn in the price of oil does not affect our development plans and our national economy too adversely. We are adjusting our financial processes to safeguard our economy. We are also taking steps to ensure that the poor and the low and medium income earners do not bear the brunt. “In 2015, this administration will continue to lay the foundation for a vibrant economy that attracts significant Foreign Direct Investment and promotes policies that ensure economic stability. “We will ensure stability in the value of the Naira by striving to take away speculative behaviours that cause market exchange pressures.http://www.punchng.com/news/2015-jonathan-vows-to-crack-down-on-troublemakers/ |
I Hope Tanoids Will Now Shut Up And Allow Quietness To Reign? |
The presence of the Maj.-Gen. Mohammadu Buhari’s running mate, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, at a concert organised by award-winning hip hop artiste, Olamide, in Lagos on Sunday has become a subject of a raging online debate. Online commentators questioned the attendance of Osinbajo, the presiding pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Olive Tree Parish, Banana Island, Lagos, at the event, which was described by many as “worldly.” Such people argued that no “spirit-filled” pastor would find it comfortable listening to “worldly” music in passing, let alone attending a live concert where many of such songs would be rendered. Responding to the photos splashed on social media, showing Osinbajo while the concert was underway, one Shydoo Shadrack wondered on Twitter if the cleric had not begun backsliding occasioned by his foray into politics. “Are we sure Osinbajo is a born-again Christian needless to talk of being a pastor? What was he doing at a worldly musical concert? Or was it that this man has begun backsliding so soon?” he asked while expressing concerns over the development. An entertainment blogger, Segun Oleniju, could not imagine how Osinbajo would have been dancing to the rhythm of Olamide’s songs such as ‘story for the gods’ and ‘Durosoke’. “I thought they said this Yemi Osinbajo man was a pastor? What was he doing at Olamide’s concert? Too much fakeness in the name of God,” he added on Twitter. Following the debate his appearance at the concert has stirred, Osinbajo has replied critics questioning his move. The professor of law wrote on his Facebook page that all Nigerians have something to offer to bring about the needed change the country needed. He added that Olamide was one of the popular Nigerian recording artistes that should join other citizens in transforming the nation. “I met the popular recording artiste – Olamide. He is an impressive young man. We are richly blessed with talented and energetic individuals who have a lot to offer the nation. Everyone should get involved in transforming our country. “It is achievable. Change is possible; change starts with you,” Osinbajo, who is running with Buhari on the platform of the All Progressives Party said. Fans of the APC VP candidate also rallied round him online, hailing his resolve to identify with the likes of Olamide and other entertainment artistes as an appealing and inclusive strategy. A lawyer, Babalola Ogunmefun-Aare, argued that since Jesus whose teachings modern day Christians follow did not shun the ‘tax collectors’ and other sinners during his lifetime, Osinbajo had not erred by attending Olamide’s concert. “So, the Professor (Osinbajo) should snub Olamide? Did Jesus Christ snub the tax collectors in the Bible? Did people not accuse Jesus Christ of dinning with sinners? Mr. Vice President in-waiting, we endorse your political moves,” Ogunmefun-Aare stated on Facebook. Another Lagos-based respondent, Fredrigez Deval, arguing in support of Osinbajo on Facebook, said, “He (Osinbajo) only met with the young man (Olamide) and attended his show. Even Jesus Christ himself mingled with the harlots and tax collectors. “We should not be in a rush to judge this man of God and the status of his Christian faith. Better still, maybe we should leave Osinbajo with God who searches the hearts of men to judge,”http://www.punchng.com/i-punch/why-i-attended-olamides-concert-osinbajo/ |
Why Has The Pdp's Led Government Since 1999 Not Achieved More Than 4000Mw, We Need Change! |
Average power generation declined to 2,900 megawatts per hour in the third quarter of 2014, down from 3,250MW/h recorded in the second quarter of the year. Despite efforts to increase power generation to at least 5,000MW before the year ends, latest figures from the third quarter economic report of the Central Bank of Nigeria showed that the country lost 350MW/h of generated electricity during the review period. In August, the Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke, in a document put together by the Petroleum and Power ministries, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission and the CBN, said the country’s gas-fired power plants would be maintained so that the 5,000MW target could be attained before the end of the year. Alison-Madueke had said her ministry was focusing on a number of gas projects that would help to cushion the effect of supply shortage in the short term, adding that the projects were at various stages of maturation and would be concluded before the end of the year. “These projects should unlock an additional of 370 million cubic feet per day of gas, assuring us of a total of 5,000MW (inclusive of hydro) within the four to five months to the year end,” she stated. But the CBN, in its latest report, stated that the average electricity generation and consumption fell during the third quarter. The bank said, “At 2,900MW/h, estimated average electricity generation fell by 10.8 per cent, compared with the level attained in the second quarter of 2014. The development was attributed to the shutdown of the Utorogu and Ugheli East gas plants for maintenance. “At 2,867MW/h, the estimated average electricity consumption fell by 5.8 per cent, compared with the level attained in the second quarter of 2014. The decline in electricity consumption was attributed to the fall in power generation, transmission and distribution.” The Minster of Power, Prof. Chinedu Nebo, stated that in November, Nigeria lost about 1,200MW of electricity as a result of the rupturing of pipelines that supplied gas needed to fire the power generation plants. He stated that the country’s power generation fell from about 4,600MW, which was attained earlier in November, to about 3,600MW. Nebo said, “Sometimes, people don’t understand what is happening. For instance, for about four weeks or so, until about two weeks ago, we were generating a minimum of 4,200MW. Sometimes, we generate 4,300MW and 4,400MW, plus spinning reserves of over 200MW. “But all of a sudden, vandals hit both the eastern and the western axis, disrupted the flow of gas to the turbines and we had to shut down the power stations and lost over 1,200MW.”http://www.punchng.com/business/business-economy/power-generation-fell-to-2900mw-in-q3-report/ |
The founder of the Synagogue Church of all Nations, Prophet Temitope Joshua, has claimed that he saw a vision of the disappearance of a Singapore-bound AirAsia plane days before the incident. The AirAsia Flight QZ8501, which had 16 children and 146 other passengers and crew members on board, was said to have disappeared from the radar in Surabaya, Indonesia on Sunday. Following the disappearance of the passenger plane, SCOAN released a video on its YouTube page, in which TB Joshua accused Indonesia of failing to heed its earlier warning. “I have a message for the nation, Indonesia. This country, Indonesia – I don’t know what is happening. They should pray for Indonesia. That is, the nation Indonesia. When it comes to this disaster issue, I don’t want to mention it. It looks so nasty to me to mention – a situation where it will cost a lot of lives, suddenly. “This is a crash. Why should this continue to happen there? I think there is a nature – a geographical atmosphere. There is something there that they should look into,” TB Joshua stated in the video sermon which the church claimed had been shot days before the plane’s disappearance. The church added that on its YouTube page that in spite of the Indonesia’s failure to look into the “geographical atmosphere,” TB Joshua and his followers had begun praying “that God would strengthen the family members and friends of all those involved in this tragic incident.” But the British High Commissioner to Ghana, Jon Benjamin, urged the general public to dismiss TB Joshua’s claims. “But he couldn’t prophecy his own church collapsing, killing over 100?” Benjamin, a British foreign service officer of 28 years, who has simultaneous diplomatic accreditationto Togo, Benin and Burkina Faso, said via his Twitter page. Apart from the UK diplomat who carpeted TB Johsua over his claims, an online outrage trailed his prophesy. A Black Briton, based in Croydon, United Kingdom, Melody Badza-Chinouriri, lambasted for claiming to have foretold the air disaster. Badza-Chinourir said, “I will never run to a man who does not even own up to the disaster he failed to avert at his backyard. He even blatantly refused to attend the coroner inquest despite repeated invitations. No accountability whatsoever. “I hope Nigeria will wake up and arrest him this time round. He is putting that country on the spot for wrong reasons. Let him prophesy all the killings happening in Nigeria. Many people have died in Nigeria than Indonesia. You have a prophet; why are you perishing then in Nigeria?” A respondent on Lawyer Omegad queried the credibility of the said video, adding that TB Joshua’s controversial prophecies were useless as they had over the years failed to redeem lives. “How come we are only seeing this so-called prophesy today? It’s obvious the video was posted many hours after the plane has already gone missing. I doubt this because God revels to redeem,” Omegad said. Another online activist, Emeka Martins, said, “Indeed most Nigerians are gullible. Why should they believe in prophesies of end-time fake pastors. TB Joshua should explain to the court what led to the death of those people in his synagogue. Why did he not prophesy his own calamity?” While other online commentators taunted the clergyman strings of prophecies, some Nigerians challenged him to foretell the day in which the abducted Chibok girls would be freed by the fundamentalist Islamist sect, Boko Haram. “We don’t want to know which disaster is next, we want a prayer that will bring the Chibok girls back home,” a respondent, Samuel David, wrote on SCOAN’s YouTube page. However, TB Joshua’s followers rallied round him, fending off criticisms of what they described as his divine calling. A Malawian, Elsie PembeKumwenda, insisted on Facebook that the cleric is God sent, saying, “Prophet TB Joshua is doing what no one can do today. Whatever he prophesises comes to pass, yet we don’t believe him. We usually regret our actions when it (tragedy) happens. May God give our prophet more of his grace.”http://www.punchng.com/i-punch/uk-envoy-lambasts-tb-joshua-over-airasia-crash-prophesy/ |
