Global health experts have said that 25 per cent of survivors of the deadly Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) may suffer blindness as thousands of West Africans who survived the Ebola virus infection are suffering from chronic conditions such as serious joint pain and eye inflammation that could lead to blindness. The World Health Organisation (WHO) experts said the Ebola survivors who fought off the most severe bouts of infection were the most likely to suffer on-going medical problems. Dr Daniel Bausch of the WHO’s clinical care team on Ebola survivors said about half of all those who fought off the virus now reported joint pain while some are suffering from severe effects. Bausch said: “Eye problems including inflammation, impaired vision and in severe but rare cases blindness have been reported by about 25 per cent of survivors. Sight problems, joint pain and headaches have been reported in a few survivors of previous outbreaks since the disease was first detected in 1976, but past epidemics were much smaller. This means that survivor numbers were too small to study or draw any meaningful scientific conclusions.” Dr Anders Nordstrom, a WHO representative in Sierra Leone said: “The world has never seen such a large number of survivors from an Ebola outbreak. During the outbreak, the EVD infected more than 27,000 people and killed almost 11,300 but about 13,000 survived in the three countries of Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone. This is new, both from a medical and from a societal point of view.” The scientist however, noted that the vision impairments reported by survivors of the current outbreak were probably linked to the virus’ persistence in the eyes. He said less measurable but equally serious long-term problems such as increasing rates of depression, post-traumatic stress disorder. Super Eagles coach Sunday Oliseh has finally laid to rest rumours that he does not see eye-to-eye with his former assistant in the Eagles Austin Jay-Jay Okocha when he said; ‘’yes, I hate Jay-Jay’’. A reporter had asked him to clear the air on rumours that he does not see or stay in the same room with the former playmaker of the Super Eagles. The hall was like a graveyard when he made the pronouncement. He looked round and explained further. “I hate Okocha because anytime we play Tennis, he beats me. We played at the weekend at Sheraton Hotel and he defeated me’’. He made light of the rumour that started after he was appointed coach of the senior national team. Many still believe that Okocha stabbed Oliseh in the back when he accepted the captaincy of the Eagles to the 2002 World Cup. ‘’We’re the best of friends and we played Tennis at the weekend’’, he emphasised. Okocha is currently the Chairman of Delta State Football Association and Chairman of NFF’s Study Group. Speaking on the Eagles, Oliseh said that he was going to make the Eagles to play team football combined with individual talents. ‘’If you remember our victories in 1994 and 1996, it was based on individual talents. But we do not have such individual talents again. What we need to do is to play collectively. That is what obtains in Germany and Spain. It’s a lot of hardwork. We’re here to do our best’’, he added. TWENTY-TWO years after annulling the June 12, 1993 presidential elections, former Military President, General Ibrahim Babangida (rtd), yesterday, said he still misses the winner of the historic polls, late Chief Moshood Abiola, who died in government detention in 1998. To show how he sorely miss his erstwhile friend, Babangida, who turned 74 today, said last week he searched for one of the letters Abiola wrote him and re-read it. Babangida spoke at an interactive session with journalists in Minna, Niger State ahead of his 74th birthday anniversary. Asked if he was missing his friend, MKO Abiola, Babangida said: “Let me see, last week, I dug out one of the letters he wrote to me and I read it. So, that shows that I still miss him.” In the engaging interview, the former military ruler also opened up on his response to the coup plot led by Major Gideon Orkar in April 1990, the Dimka coup plot in 1976, his assessment of the President Muhammadu Buhari administration and comments that he is from Oyo State instead of Niger State. General Ibrahim Babangida (rtd), Babangida, who commended the Federal Government on its renewed offensive against the Boko Haram insurgency, also gave the government high marks in terms of performance. He said: “So far, I am confident that they are doing well. They have identified the problems and they look resolute in confronting these problems head-on and there are a lot of people in the society who are offering a lot of sound advice on what to do.” SOURCE...http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/08/i-still-miss-abiola-says-ibb-74/
