Check your data connection and your mobile data balance if it is low or you dont have it wont work.also make sure you are not using a social bundle data plan because that only works with facebook,whatsapp and socials.if trying all these doesnot work try connecting through wifi.if that does not work just reboot your device or clear all apps and restart the so called gmail app.i think that enough.it should work by now
