As a corp member thinking out of getting job after the service, Agriculture always comes to mind. Cassava has been where I want to start due to its resistance and available expertise (many do plant it), The land(1 hectare) is available but my though is is it really worth waiting a year for?

I know nothing is constant in agriculture but forecast is possible everywhere. Please like how much will I spend In cultivating a cassava(leaving no stone unturned)farm (1hectare)and how much is the possible return?

1. You should start applying to jobs even before NYSC. GTB graduate vacancy is presently on and applications end soon. But the positions won't be filled until after months of tests and interviews. So, start applying to jobs now.

2. I am not a Cassava grower and do not hope to be. Historically, cassava has really poor monetary value to the farmer except maybe those that are able to have yields of 30 tonnes per hectare or sth close. Most Nigerian farmers don't even have yields of 10 tons per hectare. It is usually inter-planted with maize and sometimes melon (egusi), giving the farmer more room to make more in a year on the same piece of land. In the past year tho, Cassava has been very good financially for those who grow it as you should know that the price of garri has tripled. For smallholder farmers, Cassava may be worth it because they hardly pay for labour. And it also requires less energy. But, less energy = less profits. You hardly come across big commercial farmers growing Cassava. It's just not worth their time and investment, although less risky than most crops. The Cassava space is also crowded. The supply is high whereas the demand is quite stable. In the past year, supply has been lower with stable demand which is the reason the price has gone up. Basic economics.

3. Like I said, I'm not a Cassava grower. For a youth like me, 12 months is too long to do nothing. So, I don't know much about the profits and costs, but the cost is very similar to maize which is sth I grow often. The profit isn't similar to maize tho. I wouldn't want to give you a quote here on a public platform cos it might be skewed. But we can have a chat on email or phone. Timmylehyn@gmail.com

4. You can try the Cassava and see how it goes. Just be diligent and do the right thing at the right time. Although I believe Cassava price will go down a bit again since many farmers will grow more of it because of current prices, I don't think it would go as low as previous years. But that is provided that supply doesn't massively overwhelm demand. And the higher prices also reflect the current trend in high labour and input costs.

Let's talk.

Yes the meat can be tasteless regarding how they were just fed on synthetic feeds...And fast growth boost.

And u know light is 24/7 over there......most times they feed them 24/7...To get the taste of meat from the domestic animals, allow them follow the natural way...waking 6am and sleeping 7pm..Its a secret most poultry farmers aren't aware..
Yeah.

I think that is what they call free range birds/eggs....I might be wrong though
It's usually more expensive.

yeah its a good time to plant spacing is 10 feets between holes and between rows

Can I add lime to the soil before planting to ensure that the plant doesnt lack calcium?

Also what chemicals do you use to keep animals like squirrels and other herbivores away from the farm when the seedlings are quite young?

The reason why many people fail in watermelon farming in nigeria is because they treat the plant the way they want and not the way the plant want and they don't pay attention to it the way it's supposed to pls note that watermelon is not like cassava and other crops that even if you pay less attention to them they still survive

it's possible to make millions of nairas from watermelon farming if you play your cards right this is not rocket science or magic it's about doing the right thing at the right time below are the list of inputs that I bought for planting watermelon on ten acres my aim and target is to harvest at least 30k balls and sell each ball at the price of 150 naira and make 4.5 million by may ending/early June

there're some other charges that I've forgotten but let's go straight to the point with the above expenses we planted 4k seeds in each acre making 40k plants on the ten acres now I'm assuming that I will be likely to lose 8k plants to insects or wild animals despite knowing that it's not possible cause I have all I need to guard my melons with that assumption I'll be left with 32k plants then if each of these give me just 2 balls each that means I'll have 64k balls then I'm still assuming that I'll be likely to lose some fruits to accidental falling and thieves let's say I lose 19k balls to accidental falling and thieves I'll be left with 45k balls

Water melon performs best when done mono but if you are addicted to mixed cropping i'll recomend you to plant either millet or maize when the melon is one month old

Whu plant maize when melon is a month old?

Local farmers told me maize kills watermelon when intercropped. Dunno how true this is.
Re: My Watermelon Farming Experience by JeAgro477(m): 11:33pm On Mar 18, 2021
now even if I'm to sell each ball at 100naira I'll be having 4.5 million this is just the worst scenario cause in 2019 I harvested 18 balls of watermelon from a single hole of 4 seeds in that same year I selected 10k balls from my 6 hectare farm during the first batch I was so lucky it was during ramadan period that's the time that watermelon prices do goes up each year so I got two 911 lorries and conveyed them to my customer alhaji Bello in boundary ajegunle lagos near navy road guess what

this is not hearsay it's what I've been doing if you plant them at the same time together the maize will kill the melon but if you plant after one month by this time the melon will start covering everywhere so before the maize leaves start providing shade you will harvest all your watermelon
