Are things so bad now that people can just sit down and start analyzing how it was okay for a woman to call her mother-in-law insane?

That shiit is simply NOT okay, no matter what...
And the only reason why any woman can open her mouth to say such to her MIL, is because she has no respect for her husband.

And since she has no respect for her husband, I doubt he can do anything about it.

Maybe she has abused you in like manner in the past, to be able to extend it freely and courageously to your mum. The fact that she has the gut to utter such abominable word to your mum shows your position in the house. It is truly difficult to advice however, I will suggest you encourage each party to apologize to one another and then start some anger management program with your wife. I don't know how convenient it is for someone to call another insane irrespective of the heat of the moment.

Let her know that your mum also gave birth to someone like her and she should see her as her biological mother

Tell her to apologize to mum let peace reign
