It's for good By 1995 there was no single private university in Nigeria People fought to stop it. But I think it's positive overall |

That will mean more members for ASU or are they planning to balkanise ASU very soon like they did to the labour union? But above all, I see NASS members retirement plans therein cuz every Nigerian wants to bear "graduate" tag Else how do you explain Poor funding to education by FG High unemployment for graduates (even Npower program can't carry all at same time) yet they are trying to establish more universities to be run with same financially POOR FG funds 1 Like |

zinodizt: From 2013-2020, power cost 20-30 naira per kwh. Meanwhile, it cost N53 to porduce one kwh. Until recently, Nigerian DISCOS were, as a result, selling power at a loss. The difference was paid by a combination of loans and grants from foreign bodies, and countries. Even then, it was not enough to cover DISCO losses. Also, as at 2018, 40% of Nigerian electricity subscrbers were not paying their bills at all A combination of that, and at the end of the day, DISCOS and GENCOS are running at a loss. Maybe if you were running a business, and 40% of your customers were not paying, and the rest did not pay you full price, you would have difficulty meeting your customer';s needs. (Data from reading widely...see PwC's report on Nigerian power sector too) Nah Nigeria u dey talk of as if nah UK you dey. Same country that will spend huge sums to rehabilitate refineries that will not refine 5litres of crude in a whole year. 1.In the UK, everyone pays their power bills. Power costs higher than IT does in Nigeria. 2.Refinereis don't work, because we inssit on paying N162 for something that costs more than 200 naira to produce. Niger has a functioning refienry, and they pay N350 per liter of fuel....despite being an oil producer like us....which means their refinery makes enough profit to run well. And we have been underpaying our refinereis for the fuel they produce for decades. The subsidy they pay has at no time been enough to cover losses resulting. And because NNPC refinery worker's salary is not dependent on refineries being profitable....they get their salary if the things work or no...no wonder we don't have functioning refinereis. If we deregulated, and allowed marketers to charge the prices they want, and privatised NNPC and the refinereis, thighs would work. But you Nigerians have told all your governments since the 1990's you want subsidy. So, prices are kept artifically low for refinereis to work properly. |

maxell: That's the sad thing with Nigeria. Really, if I had my way, educaiton would be dirt cheap in Nigeria. But I know as a student I paid cheap fees, and got poor equipment, etc...meanwhile...people abroad pay for educaiton either with high fees, high tax rates, or both. A lot of people want education to be cheap like it was in the 1960's and 70's...but knowing how many students they were overall in university then(far far fewer)...plus standards were higher (people had to jump though many hoops to get into unviersity. So you got 5 A'S AT O'level? Maths and English inclusive. Congrats...you have 2 years to repeat the same at A level, plus write the Uni's matric exams...and maybe you might get in!) |

Islie: Shows the stupidity of our type of governance. All NASS does is create new everything, from schools to govt parastatals and agencies. Yet the money to set them up and operate them effectively is nowhere to be found. NASS alone wants to use N40bln to Renovate its building (not build a new one o), yet they will give these universities N1bln take off grant. What can N1bln build to set up a university, and when common 4 bedroom individual duplex in Lagos is going for N200mln. It seems we don't appreciate how much our currency has fallen. N1bln is not big money again. Just $2.5mln. Can you set up a university in US with that? Not sure that is even enough for American secondary schools. |

MasterRahl: Mass education is key to human and economic development. An educated population is easier to govern. Let them use the money being stolen by politicians to establish education institutions all over the place for the youths to get tertiary education. With time, the standard in the tertiary education institutions shall improve. Even at that, the students who truly entered university to get knowledge do study on their own, and often measure up with others who studied in universities with best standard. 1 Like |

I know it sound stupid but more schools will take more youth off the street and this will reduce the crime rate we have. If everything is being thought right, it can spark the human capital development we need and in turn lead to growth of our gdp. In real sense, giving our large population that's growing rapidly we need more schools and specialize institutions. I know we can't maintain but let's build these ones first 2 Likes |

More universities means more admission, more school fees and more employments both direct and indirect. It will even help more businesses to grow as well as forcing growth and development in host communities. This is a welcome development. I hope it works. 1 Like |
