Fowl Cholera is a serious, highly contagious bacterial disease that affect a range of avian species like chickens, turkeys, and water fowl. It may be acute with sudden death. The route of infection is oral or nasal with transmission via nasal exudate, faeces, contaminated soil, equipment, and people. Other names are Avian Pasteurellosis and Avian Hemorrhagic Septicemia.

Cause
Fowl cholera is caused by the bacterium Pasteurella multocida. The incubation period is usually 5-8 days. The bacterium is easily destroyed by environmental factors and disinfectants, but may persist for prolonged periods in soil and other carriers like rodents, cats and pigs. Predisposing factors include high density and concurrent infections such as Upper Respiratory Disease.

Symptoms
a) Affected birds may show symptoms including:
* fever
* bluish discolouration of the skin, wattle and comb (cyanosis)
* loss of appetite
* ruffled feathers
* mucous discharge from the mouth
* green watery diarrhoea
* respiratory difficulty
* sudden death
b) Signs of chronic infection are localised swelling in the joints, foot pads, eyes and throat. Mortality rates of 5–20% are fairly common in the early stages of disease and may even reach as high as 45%. As the disease becomes chronic, mortality may drop to 2–5% a month.

Treatment
* Sulphonamides, tetracyclines, erythromycin, streptomycin, penicillin are some of its medications. The disease often recurs after medication is stopped, necessitating long-term or periodic medication.
* Vaccination for fowl cholera may provide protection after laboratory confirmation. However, there are a number of different serovars of the bacterium P. multocida. That is why you need to consult a veterinary doctor for guidance.

Preventions
Biosecurity, good rodent control, hygiene, bacterins at 8 and 12 weeks, live oral vaccine at 6 weeks are some of the preventive measures against fowl cholera.

VACCINATION IN POULTRY FARMING

Adequate vaccination is an essential part of a good poultry management and for the success of any poultry operation. Effective preventive procedures such as vaccination protect poultry flocks from many contagious and deadly diseases and have resulted in improved flock health and production effectiveness.

Vaccination cannot be a substitute for poor biosecurity and sanitation. Thus, vaccination programs may not completely protect birds that are under stress or in unhygienic conditions.

The primary objective of vaccinating any poultry flock is to reduce the level of clinical disease and to promote optimal performance. The two (2) commonly vaccine use in poultry farming are

1. Infectious Bursal Disease which is known as GOMBORO VACCINE

2. Newcastle Disease which is known as LASOTA VACCINE.

THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE VACCINATING A BIRD

1. Do not vaccinate a sick bird because the capacity of their immune systems is already diminished. So therefore vaccinate only the healthy bird.

2. Give your birds multivitamin a day before vaccination and a day after vaccination. Thus will enable them to recover quickly from the vaccination stress as vaccination stress kills bird.

3. Get the right dose of vaccine for the right numbers of bird. 1 liter of water for 100 doses of vaccine, 2 litres for 200 doses, 3 litres for 300 doses,etc. 100 doses of vaccine is required for 100 birds below, 200 doses for 200 birds below, 300 doses for 300 birds below etc..

4. Do not buy and keep vaccine at home except if you have a constant electricity that can keep your freezer working 24/7 because a vaccine need to be stored at 4-8 degree Celsius. So it's advisable you buy the vaccine as and when needed.

5 .Check the expiry date of the vaccine before buying, as an expired vaccine used can cause serious damage on the birds or even kill them.

6. When buying a vaccine, get a flask along for stored purpose, put the vaccine inside the flask with an ice block. This will keep the vaccine temperature within 4-8 degree Celsius.

7. Do not expose a vaccine to sun or heat, as this will render the vaccine useless

8. Do not use a tap water for vaccination. A tap water contain chlorine and chlorine hinder the activeness or effectiveness of the virus in the vaccine. So therefore, use a boiled bore hole water or clean well water or boiled tap water as boiling of the water kill germs, and neutralize the chlorine in the water. NOTE; boiled water must be COOL before use.

9. Do not add fatty milk into your vaccination water, the required milk is skimmed milk. Farmer should consider adding skim milk powder to the water to protect the virus from chlorine or other materials but if you use boiled water, skim milk might not be necessary. The skim milk acts as a protein source and the vaccine virus attaches to it. It contains vitamin and calcium and non fat. Sometimes, many farmers will substitute fatty milk powder because skim milk powder is more difficult to find. However, fatty milk powder does not dissolve well as skim milk does, and it leaves more residue on the top of the drinker.

10. Take away the drinker from the birds prior 2-3 hours before vaccination. This will make the bird thirsty and enable them to drink the vaccinated water within a short time usually 1-2 hours when introducing the drinker back to them.

11 Do not vaccinate a bird under harsh weather. Vaccination should occur during the cooler part of the day either early in the morning or later in the evening. This will reduce the vaccination stress on them.

12. Wash all the materials used during and after vaccination.

HOW TO ADMINISTER A VACCINE VIA DRINKING WATER.

1. Get the right dose of vaccine on ground

2 . Get the right quantity of chlorine free water on ground.

3. Open the vaccine and add little chlorine free water into the vaccine for dilution if the vaccine is in powder form.

4. Shake the vaccine gently and make sure it's evenly diluted

5. Pour the vaccine into the chlorine free water with you and shake gently.

6. Pour the water into different available drinkers as this will enable the birds to drink the water easily and without much stress.

7. Take away the drinkers after 1-2hours of introducing the vaccination water.

8. Don't give the birds anything for 20 mins after you withdrew their vaccination water. This will enable the vaccine to settle down very well in their body.

9. Place the birds under multivitamin for the rest of the day.

I gave him two customers from my ends here, I am the one to call and I run errands just for him to get those two customers, I was not compensated, I didn't care, because he may still assist me tomorrow.
I order for broiler, at the point of collection, one was already dead, I immediately remove becuasecit is smelling already and I snap to him, he promised to replace it in my next order.
The other guy order for noiler, two of the noilers died 4th day.
Our next order, he replace the noiler that died 4th day that is not his fault but the fault of the farmer, but didn't replace mine that die before I collected the carton.
I was so pained, I called him, he was saying next time.
Imagine o, you replaced 2 noiler that died 4th day and couldn't replace a broiler that die even before I collected it.
Anyway, I'm done
