Voters Registration Resumes June 28 – INEC by valentineuwakwe(op): 12:41am On Apr 03, 2021
The Independent National Electoral Commission will commence a nationwide Continuous Voter Registration on June 28 across the 774 Local Government Areas ahead of the 2023 general election.
INEC’s Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, said this on Thursday during a press conference held in Abuja.
He also noted that the indefinite suspension of the bye-election held in Ekiti East following gunshots, electoral violence, and killing would stay, saying, “if the purpose of election is to kill, the election will remain suspended indefinitely. And when I mean indefinitely, I mean indefinitely.”
The INEC Chairman also answered questions on the attack on a former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Prof. Charles Soludo, and the killing of his three aides ahead of the November 6 governorship election in Anambra State.
“Our fears have been heightened and we always cringe whenever there is election violence and we hardly sleep during elections,” he stated.
According to him, the registration exercise would be carried out continuously for over a year until the third quarter of 2022.
The commission had earlier in the year announced that the exercise would commence in the first quarter of 2021.
He said, “The CVR could not recommence in 2020 due largely to the COVID-19 pandemic. In line with the general advise by health officials regarding events involving large groups of people, we considered it inauspicious to restart the CVR at the height of the pandemic. In the light of the pandemic, the commission promised the nation that it would recommend the CVR in the first quarter of 2021.
The first quarter of 2021 ended yesterday (Wednesday) and obviously the commission was unable to restart the CVR exercise. In consideration of these challenges and the measures we have taken to overcome them, the commission is now in a position to announce Monday June 28 2022 as the date for the recommencement of the CVR exercise nationwide.”

Since the BVN, JAMB, phone numbers, driver license, International passport etc are now being synchronised with the NIN, why then is INEC too foot dragging about tying down the voter's identity with the NIN? INEC should not be the coming last in this synchronisation given the sophisticated availability @ their technology.

Why does Nigeria have many biometric databases in the first place when a social security number like the NIN can serve many purpose? For instance, one can vote from any part of the country & the world without necessarily having to travel back to the registration point to vote just with the NIN.

Since the NIN is one of the most verifiable means of identifying the citizen, it behooves INEC to swiftly adopt it as the number-1 method. However, for it to discard same for flimsy reasons simply means that INEC is not ready to avoid the challenges associated with electoral fraud or irregularities especially the underaged voting & foreign voters issue.

So any CVR not tied down to comprehensive electoral reforms that will involves linkage of Voter's card to the NIN and electronic voting is gonna be a waste of time

This is because the problems of underaged voter and foreigners(fulanis) interference among many will continue to be a recurrent challenges to the credibility of our electoral process hence democratic journey.

It shows us what has been clear before. Everything done is just politics.

If not having NIN is criminal offence, why should such person be allowed to vote huh?

Hypocrisy killing this country.
If NIN is compulsory for every Nigerian, then I see no strong reason for INEC objecting.
