For years I've been praying that the continued exploitation and victimization of the south east people by security forces does not get to a retaliation point. I was praying that the officers will stop it before the region begins a rebound. Igbos have a natural tendency to push back oppression on their soil.
We have over time seen as police and army officers lobby and bribe to be posted to south east because its peaceful and they believe they will always use force to get them to part with cash. Efcc staff in the zonal command in Enugu will park themselves in vehicles and drive down to owerri where they will raid male students hostels of their choice and parade them as Yahoo boys and then force their families to cough out large sums as bail. When they need money again, they will raid another hostel and the cycle continues.
There were more checkpoints on the south east roads than there in the whole of north east, north west and north central combined. You couldn't drive from gear 1 to gear 4 without encountering a police or army checkpoint and each one must 'collect'.
At this point we can only pray that God's will prevail over the land.
