I'm not surprised with Cross River being there because the kind of Digital Governor we have there it's something else.

By the time Ayade would be done with Cross River ... God would not allow what I'm thinking to happen.

Some have already started defending them.

Had this been 3 south east states, this would have entered 3 pages.

Nigerians have redefined the meaning of patriotism.

Of all the 6 states created in 96 (the last born states). Ebonyi has the least debt and the 2nd highest revenue (behind oil rich Bayelsa)

debts of all the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory Administration exceeded 50 per cent of their revenues, contrary to limits set by the Debt Management Office.

Until when accountability is enforced, it's unlikely this will change.

We have enough resources to enable us stay afloat without debt. How do we harness it. That is the problem.

This clearly shows that Lagos state is poorly run, this is a state that is suffering from infrastructural deficiency, the state employee are poorly paid, while non state employee (Agberos and Touts) are been renumerated and the bailout fund used to buy BRT buses has been handed over to a privately owned company. This is dilemma Lagos state is suffering while some idiot are singing praises of the Lagos state government for it's corrupt strides.

What stupid capital projects are u talking about? The archaic rail systems that we won’t maintain or the over inflated road contracts that build half the quality of the money allocated to it? Not sold educational or health systems. Yet u say we need more debt? Does Nigeria know how to use money properly and efficiently like America or other countries u googled?

Even if we borrow more money we will misappropriate it as usual and then waste everything. States produce next to nothing so keep waiting for handouts from Fg. We are running a failed system and making it worse with bad management and policies.

Debts incurred for long term infrastructures makes sense but to borrow on a regular basis to pay salaries and fund security votes of governors is a no-no for me.
In Lagos, we have a few landmark large-scale public infrastructures that are being funded with debt. I have a feeling that some of these projects are denominated in foreign currency thereby causing the cost to rise as naira falls.
Most importantly, government need to price it's project well because it seems some of our price variation with same projects elsewhere always makes ours far more pricey making me to wonder.

the lagos mass transit rail line is highly inflated, that is why it is taking an eternity to complete. That project should have been completed by now so that its revenue will go to paying down the debt burden..The federal structure we run is also hampers the ability of the state govts to generate revenue.

The article is full of half information, Lagos IGR in three months is greater than it's annual Federal allocation, which was used to calculate the revenue and debit ratio. The answer from the article is not factual, real nor justify realty on ground. Lagos State pays salaries and pensions regularly, able to meet all it's financial obligations as and when due.
A States that generate an average IGR of N38Billion per month.

Lagos debt status is quite understandable, at the end, the investments in the eko Atlantic city, lekki free trade zone and Dangote refinery would spike up revenue in the state.

Eko Atlantic and LFTZ have been "ongoing" for donkey years. D debts are already encroaching any perceived returns. Dangote on d other hand isn't a Lagos State investment. It's private. Even if u say Lagos will benefit from d taxes, d question is who has been benefitting from previous taxes that has now left d state more debt ridden than it's supposed to be?

.

What I don't understand is what Osun state is looking for in number two.
That state should have declared bankruptcy by now, with the way things are going, their debts would go higher than Lagos with no feasible plan of repaying and not much economic activity going on.
.

I can't remember when I even read a news piece from the state. It appears the current governor Oyetola who was thought to bring succor due to his economic background is just sitting around, borrowing money and paying salaries.
Eko Atlantic won't bring revenue to Lagos state, not even in ten years.
That Eko is a waste of money, who is going to buy land and live there? ordinary banana island is almost deserted, u come build eko.
Most times its better to look at the financial capacity of ur citizens before starting something.
Its just like building a two bedroom flats for rent in a community where university students are much, who go rent that ur house?

USA has debt to revenue of 700 percent, same with other developed countries.

The right metric is debt service to revenue. If you can service your debt close to two times in one year especially in a low interest rate environment, no qualms at all.

Of course, judicious use of debt is encouraged.

Quite correct. Debt service to revenue ratio is the right metric as it allows a yearly view of financial health. Loans are repaid over several years, so a balanced way to look at it is by comparing projected revenue over those years of loan repayment. Moreso, as someone said, this does not include IGR, right?

Interestingly, Osun is doing fantastic in terms of key HDI such as employment( sign of increased economic output)and education ( positive sign of improved manpower development).
