VICE President Yemi Osinbajo is currently decorating Usman Alkali Baba with the rank of Inspector-General of Police, IGP

Recall that President Muhammadu Buhari had on Tuesday approved the appointment of Usman Alkali Baba as the Acting Inspector-General of Police.

The Minister of Police Affairs, Maigari Dingyadi, who disclosed this to State House correspondents at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, said that the appointment was with immediate effect.

The Acting IGP replaced Mr. Mohammed Adamu whose tenure expired February 1, 2021, but President Buhari extended his tenure for three months.

Until his appointment, Mr. Usman Alkali Baba was a Deputy Inspector-General, DIG of Police and will be in acting capacity pending his confirmation by the senate.

Present at decoration ceremony taking place at Vice President Conference Hall are the former IGP, Mohammed Adamu, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, Boss Mustapha, the Minister of Police Affairs, Maigari Dingyadi, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu and his colleague in the office of the Vice President, Laolu Akande.

Also present is the Permanent Secretary, State House, Tijjani Umar and the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Police Affairs.

Former IGP Adamu came with enviable Interpol experience but performed poorly in local Nigerian environment. He is a huge disappointment. He added little ideas to improve community policing, which was topical at the time he was appointed. He stayed too far away from local realities by his over-reliance on TACTICAL SQUADS that he routinely sent from Abuja Headquarters to crime scenes

The new IGP Usman Alkali Baba, among things, should:
- Stop treating some police officers like Abba Kyari as supercops. Yes, there is nothing wrong with special crack tactical squad but every police officer should be trained and retrained to fight crime with elite mentality at every level.
- Strengthen the intelligence function of police. Intel gathering and analyses help nip organized crimes in the bud.
- Design and implement a new police/citizen partnership blueprint. It is simply unacceptable that locals would notice strange movements of bandits on motorcycles and not inform the police.
- Renovate and equip police colleges to improve quality of training.

Congratulations to the new IGP. His job is cut out for him already. He should hit the ground running immediately and take the war to those causing insecurity all over the country.

He should collaborate with the DSS and other security agencies to flush out terrorists, bandits, insurgents, secessionist and all other criminals from the country.

Whatever will improve the security of the country is welcome but the manner in which the former IGP was deposed and the new man appointed leaves much to be desired.

How can you sack him while he's in Owerri with the VP, meaning the VP may not be in the picture at all. No recognition or respect for his office at all!

Osinbajo needs all the support he can get now from us because obviously someone else is running the country in Buhari's absence.

Some of U are jus pathetic. He was with the former IGP in Owerri wen a new IGP appointment was announced in Abuja. The "Presidency" didn't even give him the courtesy of being around wen the announcement would be made. What does dat tell U? He's a mere Poster boy who has no idea what's going on

Is this decoration not premature?
This is an "acting" appointment.
Won't the IGP nominee be approved by the Senate?
Or will there be another "decoration" after senate approves the nomination?
