Thanks. I currently use a costly method - wire mesh.

@ Farmtech - I like this your concept. But is it particularly effective? The space within the net appears large enough for the rodents to pinch and thereby renders the fruits a waste

What has been your experience?

I think mechanical means though more expensive is safer than the chemical means more so when the fruits are almost due for harvest

Thanks

it's possible to make millions of nairas from watermelon farming if you play your cards right this is not rocket science or magic it's about doing the right thing at the right time below are the list of inputs that I bought for planting watermelon on ten acres my aim and target is to harvest at least 30k balls and sell each ball at the price of 150 naira and make 4.5 million by may ending/early June
Please kindly give updates on your plants

This is very good analysis. Waiting for the cost analysis. In my experience tho, watermelon can be very profitable. One acre of watermelon can give you better gross income than one acre of Cassava, and the cost of growing the melon is lesser than the cost of growing Cassava. Plus, you sell in 10 weeks unlike a year for Cassava. But, it's very risky. I hope to plant it again sometime in the year. Is your farm located in the southwest? Mine is. What period of the year do you think is best for watermelon (for farmers who don't have drip irrigation)?

Where in South west?

Well done JeAgro, a very informative and excellent training. I am about to start my own watermelon farming, going by all you have taught here. One issue is, is it necessary to make heap(bed) before planting? What's the pros and cons of doing and not doing so? Also, my farm land is 4 hectares, cow dungs are spread over the farm land the activities of cattle roaming(this has been addressed, spoken with the herders about it), do I still.need organic fertilisers, how do I measure the quantity enough for my watermelon growth. I understand too much of something can have adverse effects sometimes

Useful thread. I learnt a lot.

Hope OP is ok. From what he says he lost a lot of money to rogue herdsmen attacks and government did nothing to preserve or protect his rights. undecided

This is where the action is. Instead of government to do its job, all we hear is the usual lip service to agriculture. The government talks and talks and talks some more...but does little or nothing to help the average farmer...and to make matters worse, it turns a blind eye to the destruction wrought by rogue herders? undecided

There is an agenda. Its been there for years.

I've been a watermelon farmer for over 8 years now. There's no secret in water melon farming that I don't know from it's disease, how to plant the best method to adopt and so on.

I've learned so many things along these years, as a matter of fact, there are things that I learned the hard way.

These pictures were taken last year. I've planted on ten acres this year. If there's anything you want to know about watermelon farming feel free to follow this thread. I'll be lecturing you on how to plant watermelon, maize, sesame seed, rice yam ground nut free of charge. I've been growing all these crops right from child hood so I'm supposed to know better.

Welcome to my world of watermelon.

Good Morning Bro

Please I need your help to guide me concerning watermelon. I have an important question I need answers to. Can you please spare some time to speak with me
