Hi folk,

I'm considering buying a car from abroad so had a look on Nigeria Custom Service to see how much a car clearance costs these days. I realised its 70% of purchase fee.

Now I'm a bit confused. Does this mean if I get a car for 2000 euros, I'm going to pay 70% of that? Or do I pay 70% of what the car worths in Naija market?.

Can someone tell me how it works please.

Thanks

I is funny that you now just came across the greatest puzzle mankind ever created for itself.

By logic you take that 70% and add another 7 % sales tax to it then the commission the agent , port and other toll collectors will get.

I hope this explains why we ship scrap cars to Nigeria, or use cotonou port.

No body will give you the clear answer even when they said it is 10 % not.

In Nigeria, things only flourish when there is chaos and confusion.

Because world economy slowed, import slowed and all those trailers are lining up for fewer customers, creating a flourishing business for some collectors

For new cars, it's now 35% duty and 5% levy.
There are other charges.

For older cars (Tokunbo), it's just 35% duty.

There are also other charges.

Basically for tokunbo, customs will use a value determined by them based on their valuation book (all cars under the sun known to customs have a value in their valuation book).

That value is in dollars. An exchange rate will be applied. Exchange rate is determined by customs using the official exchange window.

That value (surface duty) multipled by 1.38 is what customs will bill you. Then there are other charges and your agents commission as well.

Customs does not use your purchase price to determine duty payable on your car.

I hope this helps.

Thanks a lot for your responses.

Honestly I must say, the charges is absolute rip off. Making peoples lives miserable just to put more money in their pockets, as if they haven't stolen enough.

I rest my case, its no worth the hassle.

I am not in Nigeria but I wish I could believe any statement about government operations in Nigeria.

The import duty regime right now is like the chicken tax war, only directed at Nigerians by the Nigerian government.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicken_tax and that called it a war at 25% at our rate it a chicken extinction which is why the auto industry is extinct.

The funny thing is when civilian secretaries were running the customs, things were very same.
Take a look at the history of their leader and you will see when trouble started for the Nigerian economy

clearing of car in Nigeria is not determined by the price of the car
the are factors that determines the cost of duty being paid

1 year of the car
2 size I.e SUV or sedane
3 the car itself I.e luxury or normal car
4 shipping line I.e is it grimadil, five star or others.

I hope this helps if you have any questions I can be of help

o7 grand Cherokee valuation shouldn't pass 257 multiply by 1.35

Google is your best bet for the second question
my opinion though

Are you telling me about 350k when the standard price for SUV has been touted as 650-700k on SUV And Siena Minivan?
if we don't change how we do thing , it will only get worse.
Importing used cars is not a sustainable system, we should be looking at newer vehicles with longer service life.
Another thing will be to have reduced rate for wholesale companies to allow for economics of scale.

Instead of FG taking both duty and sales tax, sale tax should be the 5% that should be paid at state of registration. that will ofset the cost of road infrastructure in state of operation.

sir, understand your point buh what can an average Nigerian do?
a new Camry of year 2007 cost almost 7million naira excluding duty fee do you think Nigerians can afford these cars?
our currency can never let that happen.

550 multiply by 1.38
