In startups, its easier to get more experience and job role. In big coys, u
can be a junior Dev for 4-5 years because the manpower is sufficient
over there.
Please help a brother start up a business have been nurturing for years due no start up capital , its lucrative . I beg any kind heart in this forum, all I want rent me a shop and few accessories . its an electronic repairs business.

Those big companies you mentioned don’t have a lot of product in the market(I mean software market).

Many times they employ expert majorly for maintenance purpose and maybe a one off development team to build a product.

Many software dev in those company works are majorly expert level work and they don’t really have space to hire people to train or give space to grow, so many young devs don’t look forward to them except you have gained ground and your ready to chop money.

As a young dev startups can stress your life for peanuts but would give you a big room to improve your skill set and confidence. So starting out many devs look forward into them.

On a lite note another angle, start up give young devs insight about how company you see everyday are made and raised

Me sef they find dev for my startup.

Better ones oh..

Solving problems with code in Nigeria is still foreign to many.

Even the younger generation don't use these tech, they are reserved for enterprise solutions.

Plus, if I have an application like MS word that works well, I won't need to change the stack, I only need to improve on it.

Oga, you are in Nigeria.

Go and learn PHP.
Why if I may ask, i don't want to waste my time learning python oh.
Please explain further.

In all sincerity, there shouldn't be anything like old or new stack. But what I mean is, programming languages/tools that are no longer getting attention like before, e.g. C, C++, Jquery and the likes.

Even Java is not as popular as when we didn't have nodejs.

With the increasing quest for electric cars, embedded devices in the field of medicine, and smart homes , C++ is really in high demand.

Python is a powerful language and is rising in popularity.

If you were in Europe and America, there are a lot of python jobs.

But in Nigeria, PHP is still the king.
It's old but it is more relevant in Nigeria.
Python is a recent language and is not yet very widespread in Nigeria yet.

You can learn python. It's an excellent language, but learn PHP too.

I don't know if it's just me or maybe my network but most Devs I know seem to be more crazy about working for startups than big multinationals. I mean people would prefer companies like paystack, flutterwaves and andela than working at places like British tobacco, ExxonMobil, shell, pwc, Cognizant et Al as Devs.

I see Dev roles regularly on this companies career pages but I hardly meet Devs who work in such companies.

Why are Devs so crazy about startups? The work is ten times harder, hardly any job security. You can be sacked at anytime. Extreme pressure and very horrible pay with no pension benefits or severance package.

It's simply because it's easier to get hired in a startup than big companies. For big companies, you would need to have enough referrals and be grounded in ds and algorithms for the interview process.
Tell me why anyone would want to leave the giant pay and comfort of big companies for a startup.

We've always been told as junior developers to shoot for the stars.

In fact, I don't even think startups are for junior developers which are the top job seekers. I think it's best to start from a grounded company where you get the early experience you need from the seniors.
Going into startups will only assume you're an expert and you'll get paid way less than your worth

You are partially right as most web dev jobs in Nigeria use php or node sometimes, however, there are also some web dev jobs in Nigeria that use Django or Flask, hence, Python is not for only data science in any location worldwide.

Should i still keep learning Python?
Absolutely yes!

Should i also learn other languages and technologies?
100% YES!

If you really want thrive with Python, either get out of Nigeria or go learn Data Science and still get out of Nigeria after. There are companies outside this part of the world that want your python skill.
That's what I'm working on too because I'm a die hard python programmer, I do almost everything with it. But it doesn't seem there are much Nigerian developers who sees the power in Python. Same for Golang, that language is a beast

Python has had more continuous updates than PHP, so in a sense it is recent.

It's no easy, not even thinkable to change your codebase.
Imagine rewriting the whole software.

They may on the other hand, build new products and service platforms using newer technologies.

Adding to what DeeStarks said about learning data science. Learning backend development with Django also seems like a good route to go. And as he also said, be on the lookout to japa.
