Ibukun Awosika: I Had Great Plans For First Bank by Nobody: 5:43pm On May 01, 2021
Former Chairman, Board of Directors of First Bank of Nigeria Limited, Ibukun Awosika, said she had great plans and aspiration for the bank before her sacking on Thursday by the Central Bank of Nigeria.

She also said First Bank was able to deliver value to customers and stakeholders under her leadership.

Awosika made this known in a statement on Friday posted on her Instagram handle titled, ‘My FBN Group Journey’.

The PUNCH had earlier reported that the apex bank removed Awosika and all the board members of the bank on Thursday “to protect 31 million customers, minority shareholders of First Bank of Nigeria Ltd”.

The CBN also announced the immediate appointment of Tunde Hassan-Odukale as Chairman of First Bank. Before his appointment, Hassan-Odukale was the Managing Director of Leadway Assurance Company.

The re-organisation of First Bank by the regulator was not unconnected to the removal of Adesola Adeduntan as the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the bank and the appointment of Gbenga Shobo as MD/CEO designate without regulatory approval. CBN had earlier queried the Board of the bank over the development.

Reacting in a statement on Friday night, Awosika chronicled her journey with the board of First Bank which she said started in October 2010.

At various times, she was the chairman of the board of FBN Life Insurance Ltd, FBN Capital, FBN quest Merchant Bank Group, which she chaired until her appointment as Chairman of First Bank of Nigeria on January 1 2016.

She stated, “For over five years , I have worked with a dedicated team of board and management , with the support of Central Bank of Nigeria to rebuild and restructure the institution for its future. This included cleaning up non performing loans, establishing good operational governance systems and processes, building controls and an effective and robust risk management system.

“I am confident we have brought First Bank of Nigeria to a place where it is more than able to deliver utmost value to its stakeholders and the nation at large.

“As a board, we acted in what we clearly believed to be in the best interest of the bank and we had great plans and aspirations for where the bank could go to in its future, building on all the work that has already been done in the last five plus years.

“Without a shadow of doubt, I will unequivocally state that I have always acted in honor and integrity with the utmost interest of the institution, all our stakeholders and the Nation.”

No corporate or organizational "great plans" will work smoothly when the THREAT of the regulatory authorities isn't factored in the SWOT Analysis. With due respect, that's poor planning.

They are both Teflon Dons that made sure no dirt could be found on them in an industry plagued my money laundering for corrupt politicians and military generals ,abuse of insider loans and other breaches of CBN regulations.

They have successfully navigated the minefields that could have brought them down by hook or crook.

How much is Ibukun Awosike owing First Bank. Why did she allow herself to be used by Dr. Oba Otudeko to sack the entire management of the bank without recourse to CBN? Check out my signature if you want to go into export business.

Atleast when you are committing a crime, the rules says don't be caught, the same people you are praising had their own bailouts by the central bank.

I can't believe people like her suffer things like this. She is a strong woman, she will pull through.

I believe the bank underestimated the CBN. They must have been surprised by their actions.

When I heard they sacked Dr, I wanted to remove all the money in my account with them until CBN had to call me and beg me grin if not FBN would have been history grin
Re: Ibukun Awosika: I Had Great Plans For First Bank by ecolime(m):
Awosika represents the FirstBank brand perfectly well. She is actually an epitome of grace and I have no issues with her.

Allowing herself to be used by Otudeko was a great misstep. You can't just remove a Bank MD via boardroom coup. Someone whose tenure is almost over already.

The management team achieved a lot by reducing the Bank's NPL to a single digit- A great feat no doubt. Awosika and co miscalculated seriously and fall my hands big time cry

My verdict: CBN/FBN should liquidate Otudeko's loan with his shares. And the balance should be taken from his Airtel shares.

Five years was good enough to have implemented and achieved your mission. Between you, the board and CBN know why you were butted out. All the same congrats for the achievements within your tenure.

Why didn't you go against Oba Otudeko when he borrowed loan worth over billions of Naira from First bank to run honeywell last two years and couldn't pay back till now....
Not only shouldn't CBN have sacked you all but you all should be in EFCC net for playing with people funds in your care

Medicine after death

Her board and her overall chairman, miscalculated and thus underestimate CBN's power to regulate banking industry. Following their too much familiarity with the regulatory agencies believing that FBN is too big to fail.

Let her leak her wounds.
