My coy has a case in court to claim our money owed by one client.

You know these type of clients that enter into an agreement but find it hard to honour same agreement once job is executed.

The next thing I heard was "go to court." I quickly engaged our lawyer & we are at the judgement stage.

I want them to please call off the strike although, they have a right to insist on their autonomy.

Why would the executive and the legislature be enjoying their autonomy but a part of the judiciary under the stronghold of state govs be denied same?

Nigerian governors should have some shame and respect the constitution. Enough of the excuses.

Nobody is saying anything about this judicial staff strike and its serious, I was supposed to swear an affidavit of good conduct and that I'm not a member of any secret cult group so as to gain admission to start my masters but not a single court is open and time is going. I tire o.

As a lawyer, I was supposed to attended to about 13 cases that was to come up in the month of April, most notable is a client whose ruling on his bail application was to be given by the Court on the 15th, a young man who may have has lost the job he sought to protect by now as he is remanded in one the Correctional facilities. Painful !

Another one is a new client who has an issue with one of the banks, all originating process had been prepared to be filed after the Easter holidays, they feel very sad cos the issue had dragged for years before we were briefed and I believed/was hoping that the bank would sue for peace and we'd reach an amicable settlement at the pre trial conference, as they would have more to lose if it went to trial. Frustrating !

They're all missed and we're in May already and even when the courts resume dates for hearing them cannot be expedited cos the diary for May/June will certainly be full and by the end of July, the Legal year ends and there be a compulsory vacation that'll run till end of September/early October.

Plus no new briefs as everyone is holding unto their briefs and money. Why pay for the justice you cannot get at the moment. I can on and on but I stand with the Judicial workers, the government should do the needful.

It's not only about people who have court cases everyday people go to courts all across the nation for one thing or the other, most common reason is for getting Affidavits all kinds and for different purposes, that can't be possible anymore..
Re: How Has The Strike By Judicial Workers Affected You? by Nobody: 7:23am On May 03, 2021
There are criminal matters where the accused was granted bail, but we were unable to perfect the bail, before the strike. So those guys have been cooling off in prison custody since April this year.

I felt pity for my clients when I visited Ikoyi Correctional Centre last week. It was not funny.

That was the first causality, Right?

It's also affecting us in our civil matters. There are some time-bound matters like blocking a BVN, vacating a PND, mortgage foreclosures and winding up proceedings that are pending. We would have made tremendous progress in these areas, but there is a strike. And the innocent client is suffering.

That's the second causality, Right?

This was the very same pain the draftsmen who drafted the constitution foresaw and thus, posited that there should be a separation.

So who do we hold responsible for this mess at the end of the day?

Is it the one who is saying implement the provisions of the constitution or the one coming up with some excuses why implementation is a problem?

All the same they are on strike or not it doesn't matter because they don't judge right so strike or no strike all the same, the judiciary only favours the big ones .

The umbrella body of judiciary workers in Nigeria, the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN), had on April 1, 2021, directed its members across the country to shut down all courts on Tuesday, April 6, a directive that has since crippled both court proceedings and commercial activities within the courts’ premises.

The effects were not seriously felt at the beginning. Judicial workers, businesses, and individuals all have stories to tell.

For example,

A lawyer will have no one to represent in the courts, hence NO PAYMENT.
A lawyer narrated how he was frustrated by the daily calls from the family of his clients, currently being remanded at the correctional centre for a minor offence.
He said that the court had granted them bail, which they were unable to perfect and this landed them in the correctional center before the judiciary embarked on strike.
He further said that the matter has been settled between the nominal complainant, but as a result of the strike, the correctional service officers could not produce the accused.

Similarly, a friend had a minor issue that led to the suspension of his BUSINESS BANK ACCOUNT. The matter had been resolved but the bank needs a court order to FREE the ACCOUNT. Now he has millions of naira trapped, injuring his business badly.

Unfortunately, the end seems not to be near.

What has been your personal experience?
What is your opinion on the matter?

It hasn't affected me yet and I pray it doesnt. Judicial workers should be reasonable for once and return back to their duty posts. Can't they make sacrifices for our country? Too much greed everywhere.

How will they be impartial when governors sit on their funds and expect them to follow their directions at all times?

Maybe you don’t understand what the judicial workers are fighting for, search around saner climes and tell me where the judiciary aren’t granted financial autonomy

If govs keep buying vehicles for Judges, and tending to what they should get and not, the country will be a mess

Instead of passing the blame to Jusun, tell the governors to be patriotic and give the judiciary the independence they do deserve.

The only people it affected are people with court cases.
Not all judicial cases are court cases as we know them. Some of them involving business/commercial transactions are affected too. It is becoming a serious concern.

Eviction case has been stalled because courts are on strike. The tenant owing 18months rent is just enjoying free accommodation. I wish there's something one can do to chase them out.

One of my tenants has been misbehaving, constantly breaking rules of the Tenancy Agreement. Now their rent has been determined, and I’m not willing to renew with them. But then one needs the court to be open so that I can issue them Seven Days Owner’s Notice to Recover Possession, but there is no court to endorse the Notice, or to pack them out eventually when they fail to heed to the Notice. It’s actually sad. I entirely depend on the rent.
U can issue ur notice and serve it on him. U don't the court to open before u do dat. If he refuses after seven days then go to court
