The Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, has warned secessionist groups not to hoist unnecessary flags in his state, noting that the state was not part of such struggles. He was reported to have said to some Ekpeye Chiefs who visited him:

“Rivers State does not belong to any other place. It is an autonomous State. Nobody in other State can come and tell us that we are with them, No.

“So, I will not allow anybody to enter this State to tell us that we are part of them. We will do everything we can to protect the interest of our State.

However, a young man called Paul Achallah took to his wall to reply Wike:

"Gov. Wike must not forget that Rivers State was not created by popular referendum but military decree!

The Egbemas, Ndokis, Ndoni and so many others lumped together or annexed as Rivers State have every right as human beings to exercise their inalienable right to self determination"
