Refusing to act stupidly or follow a lost cause is not cowardism. When Nzeogwu and his boys orchestrated the coup that exterminated leaders from all regions except the east and bragged about it in the media, which led to the installation of Aguyi ironsi who use military decree to created a unitary govt believing he will last in the seat, but the northern officers organised a counter coup which killed him.

Now having done that, Ogundipe is the most senior officer at the time and next inline to rule. But he was not a coup plotter, he never wanted a share of the tribal bloodshed between the Hausas and and Igbo.

He was not a power drunk. He decided to let the coup plotters enjoy the benefits of their Bloodshed's by installing their leader. Which led to the emergence of Gowon. The Biafra war was partly a personal war, because Ojukwu doesn't want a Junior to him to hand him instructions, he would prefer Ogundipe who obviously does not want Yoruba in the mix of the ongoing tribal tsunami.

Only a fool will expect the Hausa led coup leaders to install an Igbo man simply cos he is the most senior giving the incidents that led to that point.

The Igbo's are quick to shout, but are responsible for majority of the nations problems as soon as it was created.

So, before you say coward, ask yourself if you would fight a war that is not yours? Ogundipe was smart, the position was a trap, if he entered it, he will never come out alive, and it is you Igbo people that will still continue to say he did not do enough for you.
