Additional Rafales for Egypt On 3 May 2021, the Egypt Ministry of Defence (MoD) confirmed that a contract for thirty Dassault Rafale fighter aicraft was signed with France. According to the information, the deal, reported to be valued at USD 4.5 billion, would be financed through a loan to be re-paid over at least 10 years. However, Egypt did not disclose the value of the deal or further details on the split between single-seat and dual-seat fighters. The Al Quwwat Al Jawwiya Il Misriya (EAF, Egypt Air Force) operates the Rafale EM and Rafale DM with the 203rd Tactical Fighter Wing (203 TFW) at Gebel el Basur air base. The TFW consist of two squadrons, the 34th TFS Wild Wolves and the 36th TFS Lions. In February 2015, Egypt signed a contract for the delivery of 24 Rafales, consisting of eight single-seat (EM) and sixteen dual-seat (DM) aircraft. One Rafale EM was lost in April 2019. Flanker:Just wondering how much Ethiopian soldiers get paid considering they number over 160,000. $460m is not enough even for recurrent expenditure. Not unless purchases and proceeds from Ethiopia defence industry are not counted as part of the defence budget. |

According to Africa Intelligence, the #Tunisian Army was granted a loan by BNP Paribas, and put an order for 500 4x4 and 6x6 trucks from Iveco, for a total of 62 million€. The Army has already purchased 500 trucks from the same Italian manufacturer before through its own means. in 2020 Tunisian MoD also signed a deal with Turkey to buy tank transporters from Katmerciler although the number is unknown the minister of Defense said in statement that Tunisian army have a plan to replace 2000 trucks and renovate its logistic fleet

Congratulations to Paramount for making the shortlist. "Some breaking news: US SOCOM has selected five aircraft to participate in the Armed Overwatch flight demonstration. They are: Beechcraft AT-6, AirTractor AT-802U, Leidos Bronco II, MAG Aerospace MC-208 and Sierra Nevada M28/C-145. Super Tucano A-29 is out." https://aviationweek.com/defense-space/us-armed-overwatch-competition-restarting-after-six-month-hiatus

Lurker4Long:I find it interesting that Sierra Nevada submitted both M28 and Super Tucano for this programme. Oh well, hedging their bets. And in other developments: "Three A-29s are being delivered to AFSOC later this year, but not for Armed Overwatch. They will be used to train 6th SOS instructors for Combat Aviation Advisor embeds with foreign A-29 operators." Personal opinion, not a reflection on Super Tucano, which I think is a superb platform: I'm always wary when countries export weapons which they themselves have rejected in open competition. That goes for SA, Russia, Turkey, China and all other arms exporters. |

kikuyu1:You are quite in the line of my thinking but the politicians in Abuja hearing that sum might not understand. In the shape of a battalion can be a starter with amphibious elements drawn from the Army and Naval infantry to save on costs for a new build up from scratch. The focus is first and foremost more on inculcating the marine fighting doctrine on the men followed up by adequate force enablers. A quarter million dollars should do or even less in the short term with assets used in an inter-operable environment from the NAF and the NA seconding some equipment and there we have the first set of Nigerian marines good to go. |

NAF COMMENCES ACTIVITIES FOR 57TH ANNIVERSARY, TO INDUCT NEWLY ACQUIRED AIRCRAFT The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) is set to induct its newly acquired JF-17 multi-role Thunder aircraft into its inventory to add impetus to the ongoing fight against insurgency, armed banditry and other forms of criminality in the Country. The induction ceremony is part of the activities marking the 57th Anniversary celebration scheduled to take place in Makurdi from 19-20 May 2021. This was disclosed today by the Chairman, NAF Day 2021 Organizing Committee, Air Vice Marshal Hassan Abubakar while briefing members of the press on the activities lined up for the low-key celebration. With the theme, “Enhancing Nigerian Air Force Airpower Capabilities for Effective Joint Operations in Response to Contemporary National Security Challenges”, the anniversary is aimed at emphasizing the renewed focus on cooperation and collaboration among the Services in military operations. The theme is also in tandem with the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Oladayo Amao’s vision of “Enhancing and sustaining critical airpower capabilities required for joint force employment in pursuit of national security imperatives”. In addition to the induction of JF-17, the anniversary would also feature a seminar and aerial display by some NAF platforms. There would also be series of pre-event activities which would take place simultaneously at designated NAF Units across the Country. Speaking further, AVM Abubakar stated that there would be pre-event activities which include Juma’at Service, Church Service and medical outreaches to host communities. He disclosed further that the Nigerian Air Force Officers’ Wives Association (NAFOWA) would also be embarking on humanitarian support activities across the 6 geo-political zones of the Country in addition to the launching of NAF Telemedicine facility in Abuja. Speaking further, the Chairman noted that the seminar scheduled to take place on 19 May 2021 would provide opportunity for seasoned experts to brainstorm on doctrinal development and joint force employment as well as standardization of training and interoperability of equipment in the Armed Forces of Nigeria. The seminar would equally proffer workable strategies aimed at checkmating the myriad of security challenges in the country. The induction of the JF-17 Thunder aircraft and aerial display, the Chairman said, would be conducted simultaneously on 20 May 2021 to mark the end of the 57th Anniversary Celebration. Israel's most powerful warship provides security for oil installations as fighting escalates in Gaza. You can see an iron dome system on the flight deck.

Lurker4Long:This is a funny comment. So can you explain to us why the Rooivalk has lost all tenders and competitions it has been involved in despite it been in service with the SAAF? Let me make something clear the A-29 Super Tucano is a fantastic aircraft, it is in fact the best COIN, LIWC aircraft in service today. It in service with over 20 countries across the world including the US military. For reasons we are not aware of, it hasn't been selected for the next round of tendering, however this doesn't take away the fact it is the best and most widely used COIN aircraft today. I know what you're doing there with China, but the JF-17 has never been considered by the Chinese because it can't fill any role in the Chinese air force. The J-10 which the JF-17 shares so many similarities with is already in service with the PLAAF, so why would the Chinese go for the JF-17? Countries purchase defence equipments according to their security needs. A good example is Nigeria and South-Africa, while South-Africa has gone for a 92 meters ship to replace SAS protea, Nigeria has gone for 2 ships one 60 meters and the other 35 meters to replace NNS Lana. Again, this reflects on need and requirements. |

jteku:It's easier to defend against unguided rockets from Hamas, however there is still a high chance that oil installations can be hit if targeted. |
