The only reasonable reply on this post.
Web is saturated...

With IT in Data Science and machine learning u can function in almost all field...in fact python is now the employed skill now in the world.

Op
If u ever need to become a programmer...u can pick any of this listed below
Devops engineer
Cyber security and Ethical Hacking
Data science
Networking
Cloud computing
Block chain etc

So if I learn a front end framework called JS, how difficult can python be for me?

My point is, Learn just one programming skill very well, most other languages is just syntax difference.

First, you need to be realistic with your ambitions.

Do you think you can really learn programming? There is a level to which passion can drive you to, at some point na inner power.

If so, do you have enough time dedicated to study?

You can still continue your technician job only if it is frustrating you.

You do not have to pay or DM anyone for information, you can use only these two websites and you would be fine.

I laugh so hard when I see this. The internet as me and you use it is not even up to 30 years old. All the major tech giants are less than 28 years old so how is it saturated. Have you thought of what will happen when the whole world has the same internet access the west has. You cant even imagine what will be built and with everything moving over to the cloud the demand for web developers is through the roof now.

Web development is very broad. You have frontend. HTML, CSS, Javascript and Javascript frameworks. Things like web assembly are coming up that enable you build full scale web applications. You have the backend. You have platforms (Salesforce, Servicenow, Magento, Wordpress et al). I laugh when I hear web is saturated. Do you really think data science is easy to get into. How many companies need data scientists compared to web developers.

I think what most people think about web development is it involves downloading nulled wordpress themes on torrent websites and set up a 10k naira blog for clients. grin

They don't realize that web developers write codes.

Hello nairalanders, I'm working currently as a laboratory technician, but my parents wants me to further more for medical laboratory science course in university.

Seeing the way technology is moving, I've decided to go into IT, which is the reason i want to use the money I'm supposed to use to study MLS to go into programming, instead of using 5yrs studying MLS, that's even if ASUU did not extend it to 6 or 7years, i want to dedicate this 5-6yrs of my life into programming( web development and other parts of programming maybe application software development also).

I've also decided to go to teach myself first online, and later go to IT school for certificate and meeting with other IT gurus sake so as to gain from them.

So is programming worth sacrificing this career for? Please advise.

No Begin to study how opensource LMIS softwares are written. In time you may find yourself as an expert in that vaccum.

It generally takes 6-7 years to graduate with a Medicine degree in Europe. Where did you see 2 years Lol.

@Op think about tis, with your current job, do you think you will ever need to hire a programmer in ur life? But i can bet you that you will be needed by a lot of programmers in your life. That's the beauty of what you do that a programmer can have, your skills will always be needed as a lab tech. Nd like someone pointed out, programming will be a trash job soon, just watch. Any dick nd harry can learn nd master it with an internet connection and a lot of free time. Gate is open to everyone, soon the damn compound will be flooded with programmers.

Another thing, don't you love what you do? Is it not something you enjoy? Do you really think programming will make you any happier?

The best I can tell you is to go for the MLS and still hold unto you programming.
After my degree in chemistry, I went into programming. I am still learning on udemy. I recently took a very hard decision for myself, it is a decision to follow my passion. I'm going back to school for a degree in medicine. I am seeing an opportunity there for me as a programmer.
You can learn programming while in school. I assure you that before you graduate, if you've got the zeal, you will be a programmer and an ML scientist!

The future is programming but you need to develop the skill of the future.

Learns how to program on blockchain as this will be the technology of the next three years.

AI/Bigdata programming skills are very useful in all industries especially in the healthcare and finance sectors, your lab technician background will be very useful in developing an analytical program for monitoring vaccine usage and the impact of pandemics.

Genomic is one of the hottest industry today.

Hi Bro,

I studied MLS but i will kindly advise you to switch in to IT only if you are motivated and passionate about the IT field. After completeing my Msc in immunology, i have to abandon my certificates and lab experience to start an entry level job in IT which i will be forever gratefull.

But i will warn if you really wants to work in IT especially in Nigeria go for Bsc computer science then skill up with industry certifications. Since most companies used that as a part of the job requirements. If you find your self abroad, better arm your self with industry certiifications and start from entry level.

My advice to you is to do your medical course and be learning either data analysis, data science or basic programming on your own. Every field needs one good in one of these insights. As an engineer, I can apply some coding in analysis machine sensor data to learn the data and derive insight. When you specialize in something, it gives more substance to using the data science knowledge to be more updated. If you choose to rely on certification and be a specialist, it's still okay but you can still do with your medical studies. And who knows, if you try to apply for a foreign schools you could get a PHD sponsorship from foreign profs, not requiring any Nigerian connection but your own strategy on reaching out to profs directly in foreign schools, because medical studies always have funds in foreign schools. Think locally and plan globally as you make your decision. Good luck!!

PERSONAL OPINION:

Initially I use to think this was the case until I analysed the career path myself and discovered that it would take nearly 30 years for programming career to be saturated.

Programming is just one area of tech, that being said, It is very wide and you can choose to learn or use only one technology till you retire at 40.

Take a look at this break down, this isn't even up to 50% of what programming has to offer. Imagine learning only PHP + Laravel, you can be a PHP Expert just for only Laravel and stop there. Now imagine all the other areas left for people to fill? Think about this.

I even omitted UI/UX - this one is blood money for those who understand.

Please how can one make money from UI/UX. I have been learning it for some while now I'm averagely good but I don't know how to navigate into the market

Programming is not for everyone,
Can u stay indoors for 24hours coding ?
Can u enjoy sitting in front of a laptop for extended periods,
If no then don't waste your time with it
They don't know nah. They think its regular 9-5 thing
Re: Should I Sacrifice My Laboratory Technician Career For Programming ? by goso39: 6:06am On May 19, 2021
OK bro let me just tell you the truth....
If you have passion for programming, and you know programming and so will give you the kind of life you need then fine go for it.
And also being a clinical scientists is awesome cause I have friends for are scientists, good pay etc.
They are also the highest employers of science students after school, be it biochemists, microbiologist, zoologist, science lab tech etc.
They are the only ones that have the license to own a lab and without their licence a Hospital that owns a lab cannot function.
It is less saturated compared to other health professions.
We in medicine are told we can work in the lab as pathologists.
Why do you think we doctors are fighting them in the lab because we know that 70% of the money generated in the hospital comes from the lab people.

Focus on lab tech ..programming is good but the pace it's running is something else. You have to keep updating your ability on IT.
Programming or IT have been saturated like wise most jobs.. In the future or even now you might consider studying abroad and focus on Lab tech. It's one of the high paying jobs abroad. Infact anything in medical line.
It's upto you to choose but I would encourage you to focus your energy on lab tech. One day you might get offer abroad could be in middle east, even some west African and African countries are searching for lab techs.

Don't try it at all. Programming only favors the exceptionally good ones, to be exceptionally good takes loads of hard-work and sacrifice. Not everyone can put in the time and patience. Get a degree first, then code alongside.

With the current level of influx this profession has seen, in a few years the number of programmers will far outweigh the number of available programming jobs, this will in turn crash the value of the coding profession as only the creme de la crème of programmers will be sought after

There are other IT skills you can opt for, some, even more profitable and marketable ( job security) than programming, but it's all up to you.

You need to register at Upworks, create a professional profile, apply for jobs even if it's cheap jobs for a start. You aren't doing it because of the money but the experience.

Sometimes you need an internship to get you started. Search for DevCenter Slack Channel on Google, join and let people know you are into UI/UX and you need a job.

If you say you are truly good, then get some portfolio. Upworks is just a temporary place to get experience and not a lifetime plan.

Believe it or not, UI/UX guys are the highest paid in programming. They earn double of what programmers make in top tech companies.
