Six Reasons Boko Haram Have Not Been Defeated by budaatum: 8:53pm On May 17, 2021
The phrase that Nigerian militant group Boko Haram had been "technically defeated" is ringing increasingly hollow.

Seven months into his first term in 2015 President Muhammadu Buhari coined the term, but the group and its offshoots have never gone away.

The military has managed to retake territory and dislodged the fighters from some of their hideouts. But a recent spike in deadly violence, focused in the north-east, where the Islamist group began its insurgency in 2009, has led many to ask what is at the root of the authorities' failure.

Already this year there have been nearly 100 attacks, according to one estimate. A number of military bases as well as towns, including Geidam and Damasak, a hub for aid workers, have been overrun. Hundreds have been killed and weapons, food and medicines have all been looted.

There are six main reasons why Boko Haram has not been defeated despite the government claims, experts say.

1: Root causes not addressed

Why are we spending careless money fighting boko Haram that wants Sharia when in the actual sense governor of many northern States have adopted Sharia law.

Please restructure Nigeria so that people can practice their religion as it pleases them and Sharia will be for only Muslims

Go to Northern Nigeria to see the numerous Northerners who do not want Sharia law imposed on them and perhaps you would have sympathy for the oppressed Northerners instead of assuming all Muslims want boko haram type Sharia law.

Why should a Muslim reject Sharia law or accept only the part that favours him.

Every northern Muslim must accept Sharia only christians should be exempted

With no intention of insulting, please educate yourself. Every Northerner does not accept all Sharia just as not all Christians obey Christian laws.

Some laws are just used to oppress. An example is the cutting off of the hands of petty thieves but not the hands of those who steal millions, and the stoning of adultrous women but not of adultrous men.

By your reasoning, all those all over Nigeria that voted for Buhari must support boko haram too because they must have supported what Buhari supported for them to vote for him.

Do think a little now before you quote a response.

Simply implementing Sharia is not their goal. They have become crusaders for the establishment of a new type of society were their own interpretation of the Quran is law and it means the abolishment of everything else, including all the things you think of as basic human rights.

That will not happen. Bokoharam is not after a reform of the current system, they want to impose their own system so no matter how much improvements you make they will not be deterred.

You are speaking as if is an automatic thing. The way reform will help to rid us of Boko Haram is if the reforms allows for a swift and concise dealing with of the problem. The way you phrased it you seem to be saying if reforms happen, we will just sit back and Boko Haram will just disappear. If that is what you mean then it's a pipe dream.

It is the duty of the government of Nigeria to spend money protecting all its citizens, some of whom live in Northern Nigeria and are being terrorised by boko haram.

If you allow boko haram to conquer the North of Nigeria, boko haram will win that war and then be able to focus their resources fighting you.

At the moment, boko haram is fighting ISWAP for control of the North.

Nigerian intelligence officials have told reporters that Shekau and some of his fighters were surrounded on Wednesday by fighters from the Islamic State’s West Africa Province (Iswap), who attacked in dozens of pickup trucks equipped with heavy weapons. According to the officials, after killing many of his bodyguards, the Iswap fighters demanded that Shekau swear an oath of allegiance to Iswap’s leader, Abu Musab al-Barnawi.
