The writer may or may not be a paid agent but makes salient points. People who argue against right sizing are not putting alternatives on the table. The crux of the matter is the wrong approach taken by El Rufai.

First of all, he should have built a sound case for right sizing, presenting relevant data like paying 50,000-100,000 workers (2-5% of Kaduna State population) gulps 80% of revenue to the detriment of other sectors and needs of remaining 95%. He should also have presented other cost centers apart from staff salaries, including number of govt political appointees, wasteful spending in security votes, bloated estacodes, maintaining services that add no value etc. Then he would have proceeded to rallying everyone around the vision of what he aims to do, how much savings will be made, how he will use it to better the lives of citizens etc. In that discussion, the unions will be a natural front line stakeholder.

After that, he will design a transparent process and start first from pruning political appointees and cutting govt wasteful spending by say 50% for example. After demonstrating good faith elsewhere, only then can he come to workers, working with the union to agree on process of choosing those to be impacted and how much they will be paid off. Then an implementation timeline is agreed.

This is how it should have been done with citizens massively supporting a rather painful set of steps. This is how most private sector organisations do it. You will not find a serious organisation that doesn't right size from time to time, why do we expect something different with the public sector? Until we start approaching issues in this country with a business mindset, we will keep scratching the surface of our mess. If we in this generation can genuinely sacrifice to make future generations better, then we would have done a good thing but many are more interested in themselves and the now.

His decision to sack now untimely. A state that's facing security challenges and you're planning to sack 45k workers, there's no way you won't breed more criminals.
The problem in Nigeria is that we don't give holistic approach to issues.
1. Economic development should not be centered around local, state and federal secretariat, it should be centered around people. Get rid of insecurity, and you'll see businesses and investors triving because a man's environment is his first concern at anytime. That woman that sells fried plantain will soon think of adding fried fish, fried yam, fried chickens, she will expand and do well because it's natural that when the mind is at rest, you think of growth and think straight.

2. On redundant staff, he can easily harness their other strengths. There is a federal college in my area, when anew provost came, he noticed so many redundant staff in service. He sent out a form that they should fill in their skills. Few months later he(provost) came up with entrepreneurship center idea and these set of redundant staff were further trained and used to train the college students on entrepreneurial skills and they charge outsiders a little amount of money. The college went into full production from there and began to generate extra money by packaging the products with industrial machines.
The problem is that, most people want a government job because of job security(because we don't have a favourable labour law, and this is another failure of the government, the foreign business owners treat us like trash in our own land) and when they get there, they are not relevant, it's not as if they are useless, since the government makes a mistake of employing them in the first place, therefore, the next thing will be to harness their skills, and if you plan to lay them off, pay them, or else you'll have more criminals.

This article has a biased conclusion. If reducing the number of Civil servants is the solution, how about the redundant political office holders and also huge salaries paid to political office holders in the state?

A single politician's salary per month including all those unnecessary and sick allowances can pay over 30 Civil servants' salaries. We are just not being honest in process as this. Politicians live large but the masses get to bear all the negative financial impacts from the government.

It is high time politicians stopped this view of cutting cost of governance through mass sack of workers. For their to be genuineness and acceptability of such policy, the entire public spending of funds on contracts, both imaginary and inflated, must be exposed. All the claims of political appointees, both reductant and imaginary, must be exposed also. I know a number of persons who are SA, EA, SSA to a state government, who receive salaries, yet do practically next to nothing, except steal votes during election year.

Also remember that the govt is not very people friendly in terms of feedback when sharing your solutions .

Nigerians want change but often are unwilling to make the sacrifices that it demands.

Every informed person understands the strategic importance of El Rufai's actions to the drive for development. The man is making the hard decisions and hopefully, it will reverberate through out the country and the federal civil service.

The civil service across the country is a canker worm that needs to be cleaned out and repositioned for effectiveness.

Until this is done, no government policy would achieve it's full mandate.

you are spewing this gibberish because you were not the one being sacked. How can a governor in his right senses just wake up one morning and decide to sack a whooping 45 thousand people that doesn't solve any problem rather it compounds it because unemployment rate has definitely gotten higher which will ultimately lead to more crime

U can't sack a worker since 2018 without entitlement.

Re: El-Rufai: The Pathfinder And His Unpopular Idea (Politics Nigeria Editorial) by ShaqFu: 8:29am On May 21, 2021
First things first, how did the redundant civil servant get employed in the first place? Also, how did the governor know they are redundant?

If the governor of Kaduna state really spend 80% of revenue on salary, we should ask him what he's currently doing to create other source of revenue, because it's now a known fact, it is never prudent for any individual or government to depend on just one source of revenue.

Then also, I'm pretty sure El Rufai sacking those workers won't make any damn difference. It's not today we are hearing about such nonsense. If El Rufai really wants people to take him serious, let him first cut the salary of political appointees, political aides and members of the Kaduna state house of Assembly.

Beside, these states saying they can't pay the 30,000 Naira minimum wage, we should ask the state governors how come they can't pay when we see and hear how funds are being looted from such states. Lol.

What a well structure write-up by a well paid person or someone seeking to be recognized by the Kaduna State governor/government.

I can see a favour seeker who do not think of those who have died of high blood pressure just for losing their job and source of income.

This guy is the brand new idiots and wicked soul that have emerge in Nigeria.

Tell your governor/government to cut down the benefits of politicians and stop stealing public funds to reduce cost of governance.

First... We can have this conversation without resorting to personal insults.

Second... Where did you get your figure of 45 thousand workers being sacked?

To correct you, the government is right sizing for efficiency and just about 3000 workers would be affected.

As someone about has rightly said, for Nigeria to work, we have to move from operating government as an NGO to a business.

Nigeria needs to move forward from this hand to mouth approach.

Our cost of governance is very high. Granted there are lots of other issues but many solutions would not see the light of day if we don't do this.

No government the world over operates like this. As we lean up the civil service, so would the same cascade to all part of government.

The fact is that Elrufai is popular oppressors of masses. From time immemorial, he always championed unpopular agenda ruthlessly. The labour union shouldn't have fought him because he is ruthless and has no regards to human right. He always won such fights. The labour union should have deployed more of negotiations than applying industrial actions. History and posterity will always remember as an oppressor of lower class.

Let's see how this will end.
Do you even know what oppressor is?

Do you?!.

I do not in totality support El Rufai's current decision, but I think he should have negotiated
more.
But there's nothing logically and economically wrong with his decision.

What modality is used to measure it?

When did sacking political appointees start to be an issue?

Is there any law that empowers governors to sack redundant workers? Nope

Never knew politicsNigeria is also a government PR wing

Very shameful
Can yourself keep employees who does nothing all day and keep getting salary?

It is an open truth that most civil servants are doing nothing in the office.

For anyone who has been following events across the state, it will be obvious to the blind that El Rufai is a bad leader. Since his days as BPE chair to FCT minister and now to being a governor. Give it to him he knows how to have his ways with words but obviously, this won't work all the time.
Very soon, you will start getting to know the real reasons for the mass sack and you will be shock that the finance ish is a hoax.
Yes, government is broke but, there are various ways to use this same people you are sacking to generate money, please don't tell me they are useless unless you are telling me their employers in the first case is stupid, then, we ask which system made them so.
You don't cure a sickness by treatment of the symptoms, the civil service is not the problem, the politicians that corrupted it is.
Solve the problems with politicians and discover Nigeria had no problem!

Most of our leaders including the State Governors lack initiatives & resource management ideas.
They depend so much on revenue allocation from source & all they do is to award contracts to cronies & pocket security votes without caring about the security & welfare of the masses.
In their desperation to stay in office they fund & arm miscreants. The result is what we're facing today: insecurity, poverty, lack of employment opportunities, infrastructural decay etc.
If workers are unproductive, there are ways of to disengage them or boast their productive through training & capacity building.
Retrenching workers now is barbaric & counterproductive. The Covid-19 pandemic has brought untold hardship world-wide & funds meant for palliatives were diverted by a lot of Government officials. Reforming the civil service now is untimely & will not guarantee industrial harmony.
El-Rufai should listen to wise counsel & avoid creating additional economic hardship to the people of Kaduna State & Nigerians in general .
