Open grazing ban in South irreversible, Akeredolu replies Malami


The Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, has tackled the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr Shehu Malami, for faulting the ban placed on open grazing in the Southern part of the country.

The Southern Governors had at a meeting in Asaba last week banned open grazing and asked the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), to address the nation over the increasing rate of insecurity in the country.

However, Malami who appeared as a guest on Channels Television on Wednesday faulted the ban, arguing that the governor had no right to do that.

Akeredolu, who is the Chairman of Southern Governors’ Forum, spoke in a statement he personally signed on Thursday, titled, ‘Our decision is irreversible and will be enforced’.

He asked the AGF to challenge the governor’s position on open grazing in court, adding that Malami’s comments were “unfortunate and wicked”.

Mr Malami is advised to approach the court to challenge the legality of the Laws of the respective States baning open grazing and decision of the Southern Governor Forum taken in the interest of their people. We shall be most willing to meet him in Court.

Same here. However it goes down, Southerners should get informed so we can determine when and how we have been betrayed by our leaders so that we can punish them accordingly.

Clearly we now see that Governors have the power to enforce the ban they agreed on against open grazing.

It will be interesting to note, from this point on, the Governors who show they respect the wellbeing of their people more than any commitment to pleasing Buhari and his ruling cabal. In my head I can only think of Ortom and Akeredolu because of what both have done bravely so far.

The fulanis are missing a great opportunity n inadvertently opening up ways for others which will eventually affects them negatively, nobody Denies the fulanis citizenship but they can't claim ownership of the country's whole land, the fulanis don't have to rear their cows everywhere before they can sell their cows n products nation wide, open grazing is certainly no longer feasible everywhere in Nigeria,yes ranching is surely capital intensive, animal husbandry is no doubt a private business.The fear of most ethnic groups and communities in Nigeria is feelings that the fulanis would eventually take over their lands n dominate them right in their domains and nationally these feelings are certainly not without precedence or can they wave off,so what should the fulanis do?,the fulanis should accept the ranching proposal but request that the states with federal government support should establish the ranches,drow up the rules governing them, provide the amenities and security while they register n use the ranches for payment of fees,just the same way states governments built markets n rent out the shops to traders of all backgrounds,the northern states with fulanis as indeginous population should be in the forefront of the scheme, this way the fulanis shall maintain their dominance of the business,more n better opportunities will come their way n everyone will be happy. But the present quest of having their way by force through clandestine federal support is legally n morally wrong, unacceptable n untenable, gradually a coalition is being built up against them,the repercussions will be devastating, those decieving them that the country can't do without the fulanis should realize that others can rear cattles too it's just a matter of time n will, cattle meat can easily be imported, fulanis are in no position to hold Nigeria to ransom taking away political power,they should think deep before it's too late.

Governors have the power to enforce it. The problem is that the police who will carry out its execution is being controlled by the FG. The police personnel are being ordered from Abuja to sit on the fence while state security groups like Amotekun and co only have the power to arrest and handover suspects to the same compromised police. This is the reason we need state police with relatively absolute power over cases like this.


State and zonal security networks need power to arrest, detain, prosecute, and imprison criminals not the nonsense transfer to compromised federal controlled polce and prison officers.

My guy I wonder oooh. Animal husbandry that has being made a precise science worldwide still has to be practised at the most basic, archaic, disruptive and nuisance level in the biggest black nation on Earth because of Fulanis alone who refuse to change their ways and accept modern practices.

This is the crux of the matter and something all Southerners or well-meaning Nigerians must unite to fight.

Imagine Miyetti Allah directing their members and herders to ignore the open grazing ban of the 17 Southern Governors. What arrogance !!!

The nerve of those people. Clever folks know that if the South does not resist and defy them, as Akeredolu's is insisting, then Fulanis will be further emboldened to behave with impunity safe in the belief they own Nigeria and that Buhari, Malami etal can protect them from anything and anyone to include the laws of Nigeria.

Respectfully you're wrong. As is 90% of everyone commenting on this post which is scary.
Let me explain. Firstly the state governors do not need moral encouragement. They and their legal representatives fully understand the law. The judge was not telling them anything new regarding the grazing ban.

Secondly to quote you "a diplomatic judgement" is no judgement. Because she was playing safe which reaffirms my earlier criticism.

Let me break it down for you and others as to what this case is about.

A law suit was brought by representatives of Southern governors.
The suit was brought about because the grazing ban was ineffective.
The ban was ineffective because herders were not obeying it and security agencies were not enforcing it.
The governors were unable to do anything because they do not control security agencies.
The governors do not control agencies because there is no state police in Nigeria.
There is no state police in Nigeria because the Nigerian constitution made the Police under federal control.
The governors out of frustration had hoped through the law suit would force the president to do the needful.

Instead of helping the Southern governors the judge essentially threw the case out citing numerous errors in legal process.

The crux of the matter is that herders are flouting and disobeying the law. The security agencies are not doing their jobs. The governors do not have the legal powers to force them to do their jobs. The judgement has not helped nor shed light on how this can be resolved.
