True all you said however that is just one way of looking at things.

Another way is to critically analyse the failures of the first republic. The fact is most politicians are weak men often driven solely by their unquenchable thirst for more power. Just imagine what the Western region could have become if Awo had simply focused on it alone as opposed to running for the centre.

If we readopt the 63 constitution, it will still be same of same for the most part. Northern elements will still have sway over parliament and the opposition will be willing to dine with the devil if it means getting power.

I say we take away the centre permanently and let us all within our own various enclaves find a way to build a sustainable future country that we can truly call our own.

This is another angle to look at things and you made a good point.

However, something is constant in both scenario and that is the greed of the people (politicians ) in this case.

Even if we all have different countries, that doesn’t guarantee that we don’t still have these greedy politicians starting all over their power play and corruptions in the new country. It’s an African problem.

—pre-1963 constitution, a good constitution but politicians are corrupt but yet the system is still manageable. Northerners only exploited the power a bit but not much structural input from them coz the system is somehow solid.

—post-1963, not so good system that can be easily exploited, politicians embezzle and even with crude oil proceeds, Nigeria keep decaying. Northerners perfectly exploited the system.

— A new country, the Northerners won’t be the factor here coz every country will shape her own destiny. But you will still have politicians to contend with. Although this might turn out better than the 2 above but it’s not immutable to bad government.

Things were not better. More people were poor, we did not have the infrastructure we have now, many of the highways we have today were non-existent or dirt tracks, and there was no Niger bridge

Plus, today, we no longer produce the things we produced in 1963. And even if we did, our populaiton has quadrupuled since then. So, what we produce won't be enough for us

Most villages and towns did not even have power at all

Plus, everyone wants states, not regions. People even want far more states

Things were not better under regions. It is a myth you people tell yourselves.

Nigeria can only develop by becoming industrial, not by relying on oil or anything else.

And under what system of government will the industrialisation takes place?

Definitely not under this present northern dominated inept, corrupt and undefined governmental contraption.
Re: Constitution Review: Akeredolu Backs Return To 1963 Constitution by PDPGuy: 4:31pm On May 26, 2021
I completely agree with Governor Akeredolu’s submission. This 1999 constitution (as amended) must be discarded and a new one put into place to take effect from 2023..

The new constitution must allow states (or a group of states) to establish their own police forces, and allow states to earn no less than 50% of the export proceeds of natural/mineral resources from their domains.

The new constitution should also do away with the NYSC because that program, as laudable as the initiative may have been when it was introduced in the 1970s, has outlived its usefulness.

Furthermore, instead of compelling the president to appoint ministers from every state, the new constitution should only require a president to appoint ministers from every geopolitical zone. The number of ministries should also be limited. This should help in reducing the cost of running the government.
In the same vein, the current bicameral federal legislative body should be abolished; in its place should be a unicameral National Assembly comprising between 6-8 members/state.

Last but not the least, so-called Sharia law and courts must be abolished if we truly believe Nigeria is a secular state.

you can say that some part of Nigeria were underdeveloped but not south west,as at then west was prosperous and things really make sense then, not the noise pollution we have all over the west now,and mind you, going back to regional govt won't stop us from being industrious,it would only encourage every state to work towards being self sufficient and stop being a leech

I agree we should go back to 1963 constitution because it's the only legitimate constitution since independence and the only constitution we made that brought prosperity to the regions. Other constitution pre-independence brought prosperity but were done by Britain

birafra people are against it right from 1963 . they still believe NIGERDELTA should be under them. they believe regional govt will not favour them without southsoth

And did it take place under all the Southerners that have run us.?

The reason why we are not industrialized is because you Nigerians think that the economy is a national cake that should be shared.

Also, the biggest business in Nigeria is importing stuff and selling

And finally, you guys refuse to pay the money we need to fix power because 'we are too popor'.

And if Nigeria is underdeveloped because North...how about most African countries too that don't have Northerners ruling, yet are not as developed as Europe? It is because of the above reasons.

We have economies that are based on selling raw materials and importing things with the revenue. And we don't control the price, and we look down on technical educaiton...which is needed for industrializaiton to work. We all want to work in office, or be dealers in imported stuff

That is why we are not industrialized.

The 1963 constitution predates Biafra so say what you know! Besides we are talking about adopting that constitution but replacing the regions with states. Any state that know they're not viable should merge with a neighboring state

cheesy

Please don't make me laugh.

You Nigerians love a good myth...North, South, West, East.

Most parts of the SW did not have power in the 1960-66 period. Most of the roads were bad. Apart from urban areas, the rural areas were underdeveloped...and from 1965...the roads were unsafe and dangerous (go read about Operastion wetie).

Real nations and regions rely on using their resources to develop their industries....not sell raw materials and import stuff with the revenues...which is what the SW, SE North, Middle Belt and all Nigeria has done since independence.

Look, I am not just adressing this to you...I am adressing all Nigerians because I am tired of our constant fighting over nothing.

The only places where Sharia have been imposed have been Muslim majority states. (And yes, I am opposed to sharia...especially as wee are a secular nation. )

Finally, if you want development, support leaders who will get us industrialised, not return to regions./

We don't even produce enough to satisfy one region self.

Prodruce enough to support one region?
How do u mean, atleast not in my region pls we produce enough that other regions steals ours.

We play too much in this country. How is going back to a 1963 constitution the best for Nigeria in the 21st century? Going back to that constitution may address basic national issues and policies, but would never address the present realities of a country in 2021 that wants to develop and compete with the rest of the world. A lot of social archaicness that needs to be abolished or upgraded is still in that 1963 constitution. If going back to the 1963 constitution is the best we can think of, then we are nothing but jokers.

Give us examples of what and what are archaic in it sir.

It won't.

To challenge pour security problems, we need to start by acknowlediging that our police and armed forces are poorly funded, and they need more funds

And going back to regions won't solve that. The regions, as things stand, if they are reconstituted, cannot raise enough funds for their upkeep. Nigeria is not the same nation it was in the 1960's...especially as the UK being our guaranteed market for most of our raw materials virtually ended in the 1970's.

We can change our nation now, instead of waiting for 'circumstances to change'.

Back to secuirty....short term funds can be raised by rasing our tax to gdp ratio, mid term by remving subsides completely, long term by industrailising.

Zane2point4:

How do u mean, atleast not in my region pls we produce enough that other regions steals ours.

Which leads to another issue...none of the regions are producing enough to sustain themselves...meaning there would still be a big fight over oil revenues.

This is not 1963...WHEN we had cocoa, cotton, etc etc...and when we were among the top 5 producers of all those stuff...and in some cases (eg columbite) no 1 worldwide. This is now, when our agro capability is messed up, when our solid minerals are not quite enough, and when most people prefer to go into business...importing. And where we all rely on oil.

Go back to 3 regions, and two would be flat broke, and the East would be using oil to paper over the cracks...plus there would be a fight over who controls the oil between the oil producing bits, and non-oil producing bits (And in the old regional system, there was already agitation for resource control then)

We have to be realistic.
