I totally disagree with you sir, He was a Nationalist. The Man who invented the Naira, He formed trade union Congress, established NTA, built the 1st Stadium in Nigeria, Most of His Achievement are 1st, 2nd to Non. Awo was I great leader, Nigeria would have experience much development if He had rule
You forgot to mention that he invented tribal politics

All government owned ...that's socialism do u even know what socialism is ?
How do you think a new nation should operate? Without template?
America, e bacon of capitalism showed some templates before turning things over to the privates.
BTW, tell us what the people you consider capitalists achieved in the period

Awolowo was not that man, just like almadu Bello who declined to be the prime minister of Nigeria and choose to be the prime minister of northern region giving the position of Nigerian prime minister to fellow northerner belewa , awolowo only cared about Yoruba, western region more than he did for Nigeria as a nation.
Your assertion is wrong. If Awolowo were like Ahmadu Bello and only cared about Yoruba:

1. He would have joined Biafra in pulling the Yoruba out of Nigeria instead of being of so much value as Finance Minister during the civil war. He had more chance of being the President of a Yoruba nation than being the President of Nigeria.

2. He would not have aspired to be the President of Nigeria or bothered about all that was happening in the center. He would simply have stuck to the Western Region.

The only man who would have changed the course of Nigeria into greatness had he become president.

Unfortunately the country fell into the hand of tyrants, anarchists, clowns, jihadists and terrorists. A people that ought to be great in all areas of life become dissilutiomed citizens of their own country subject to the whims and caprices corrupt men of questionable characters and agents of destructiontion.

Chief Obafemi Awolowo, you are a great man.

On Oodua nation I stand.
Arrant nonsense!!!! The little chance given to Awo, he turned into tribal jingoism.

I think zik was trying to make up for his mistake of not working with Awo and His decision to accept Ceremonial post
otomatic:
Interesting.

But OP, your heading is misleading. Balewa did not interfere. If you check the sequence of events, it was not happenstance. He was just keeping up appearances; doing eye-service, as we say.

In the Chief's own words:
‘Don’t you see that this fellow Balewa is a clever deceiver? Or is he not?’ ‘Indeed!’ she said, and added: ‘Don’t let’s talk about him here.’

Again:
"In contrast, and to his eternal credit, when Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe was installed as Governor General of Nigeria, he personally saw to it that I was given a place of honour only next to the Prime Minister, and my wife was accorded a status second only to that of Chief(Mrs) Flora Azikiwe."

I wonder how people read but cannot comprehend. This Zero critical reasoning is what has landed our country in this present state of affairs.
Disclosure: I am not affiliated to any of the major tribes before una begin shout say Azikiwe na my brother.

The irony of it all is that the same fulani that humiliating these people is still reverenced by them but the Igbos that always extend a hand of fellowship to them is who they see as enemies. Rubbish people!!!

1) Well awolowo indeed wanted to use the biafran situation to pull Yorubas out of Nigeria, in fact even before ojukwu declared Biafra, awolowo visited ojukwu in Enugu when it was clear ojukwu was going to declare Biafra, he requested that, ojukwu should inform him 24 hours before declaring Biafra so he himself can have the time to organize and prepare the Yoruba region for secession

2) whatever made awolowo change his mind was not because he cared about Nigerian unity or anything, but he actually viewed the biafran situation to his political advantage too,
A) it was an opportunity for him to overtake his strongest rival nnamdi Azikiwe politically
B) it was an opportunity to destroy the domination of igbos in Nigeria cause igbos dominated in all sectors

C) he realized just like the northerners that Eastern region which became biafran was sitting on a huge deposit of crude oil which was as precious as gold and allowing igbos to take all that away was something both him and the northerners realized will be the biggest mistake they will live to regret if they allow the igbos to leave with all that wealth
