Comparing Postgrad Funding Opportunities in the US and UK

While both are among the favourite study destinations for international students, in this video I pit them against each other to compare the general characteristics of their postgraduate funding.

I compared the general quantity and quality of funded opportunities, opportunities to work while studying, average earning of postgrad students, and post study job opportunities.

This is based on my experience having received funding from both countries, as well as from experiences of friends and acquaintances.

Greetings to the members of this thread.

I am a Masters student of Chemical Engineering in Nigeria. I also hold a Diploma in Environmental Engineering. My research area is design of processes that utilize waste as material and energy resources. Right now i'm working on utilization of agricultural waste for energy generation via biomass combustion.
The picture attached is a rough model I tried using palm kernel shell.
Advice is welcomed from these respected scholars in the house

For my machine learning and artificial intelligence research and project works I often use the following depending on size and aim, all gives similar results just depends on computational power, speed and deployment.

1. Python packages (pandas, numpy, Scikit-learn, Matplotlib, tensorflow) via Jupyter note: This is FREE.

2. IBM Watson : I use this mostly for projects which am paid for, example, I got a project to build AI predictive model for Aeroponic Farm grown vegetables and potatoes. So since this has flexible cloud system and I can easily share with the client and add new data without distrupting the already built model. THIS is not FREE I pay some cent per cloud credit.

3. Matlab and neurodesigner

4. I have used Azure Machine Learning Studio (it has free version): Quite good and support all python libraries and packages.

For that particular energystorage device, we had around 560 datapoints, I ran various backpropagation algorithms (see below table) with Matlab (this you can run various propagation algorithms) and I compared the generated models with that produced from neurodeigner (this one has some limitations only few models are allow to be run).

So you can use any of above and obtain same or similar results if all parameters are set the same.

What are you working on ? which platform are you using?

Hi, are you referring to Neurodesigner Editor? If yes, can you assist with the setup file? I have searched the web for it to no avail. It appears they stopped its production.

This is good and well done.

What about CO2 emissions and other pollution as a result of the system you created? The orange colour of the flame indicates that it is not totally clean energy. Are you addressing that or how do you intend to address it in your design?

Have you considered a biomass gasification system that is both commercially and environmentally beneficial?

You can scale your design into a biomass-gasification conversion system for highly efficient power generation or you can design a similar system with some modifications to produce hydrogen gas or directly generate electricity.

Hydrogen Energy's Benefits

It is essentially a non-polluting energy source : When hydrogen is used to make fuel, the byproducts are completely harmless, with no known adverse effects. Hydrogen is used as a source of drinking water in the aerospace industry. Hydrogen is usually transformed into drinking water for astronauts on ships or space stations after it has been used.

Hydrogen Energy is Non-toxic: It's non-toxic and uncommon as a source of energy. This indicates it's environmentally benign and doesn't harm or destroy human health in any way. This distinguishes it from other forms of energy, such as nuclear power and natural gas, which are both exceedingly dangerous and difficult to harness properly.

Use of Hydrogen Greatly Reduces Pollution: When hydrogen and oxygen are mixed in a fuel cell, electricity is generated, which can be used to power automobiles, run an electric motor as a heat source, and a variety of other things. The sole byproducts of hydrogen's reaction with oxygen are water and heat, which is one of the benefits of using hydrogen as an energy carrier.

Take note it has some disadvantages as well mainly storage complications and still new tech.

Now the biomass can be converted to Hydrogen gas (see attached paper) or another type of cooking gas or for direct electricity generation.

I have some personal network files from way back that I would like to like to reload in it and then port to a more modern software. They are for my personal research.

Thanks for the effort. I don't need a registered version. An evaluation version can run for 30 days. That is all I need.

If you visit any university of your choice in the mentioned countries; you will see the minimum admission requirements and that will guide you. All universities often state the minimum requirement which differs from each university and also for PhD there are other things being considered beyond CGPA.

Good day!

This is your supervisor who happen to be human just like you. To be able to work well with any person be it a supervisor, senior colleagues or others; you must be able to talk to them and clear things directly with them.

If you don’t understand your supervisor message; kindly write back or visit your supervisor and let him/her know you don’t understand and ask for exact things he/she meant.

Asking questions is part of learning. Also don’t assume you know something unless is exactly what it means.

Best wishes!

Oh this attitude of these supervisors need to change so as to actually train the students they are supervising.

When I was a student; my supervisor always plan for summer each year for us to travel and he will be the one reminding me all time that we should apply for conferences during the summer.

I remembered we were in Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania one summer; I went back to the hotel I found like 10 bottles of Coca Cola stuffed in our bags. I was like boss why do we have so much cola he said he realized cola is cheaper than water in that location…I just laughed. So the relationship is like friends and that’s make everything possible. When I graduated and got job in the UK; and I told him I will leave, I can see him his face he feels bad. Not because he does not want me to progress but because we maintain good friendship which he feels will get lost with distance. Immediately he told me his wife younger brother is a professor in another UK university that he can convince him if I can work there rather so we can keep in touch. So supervisor relationship should not be a monster-vampire relationship should be someone trying to train or guide a student.

Today my supervisor and myself owns a science-based tech company together in my university. When i told him am developing some conductive inks to some start-up on Canada; Immediately he told me I want to be there during opening speech so I can tell them am your supervisor grin; he likes to show off like this.

For me; both female and male students in my lab we maintain very similar cordial relationships.

I believe that how it’s should be.

Sad this isn't the case with most Nigerian PhD students. Your lecturer is more of a demi-God and you get your degree mostly on how loyal and respectfully you are instead of research..

Your submission here is not true! What impression did you give to your supervisor about yourself? You must have 'charisma',that's an attribute of a good Ph.D student.

Another tip: Don't completely depend on your supervisor for direction. From time to time, make reasonable suggestions onthe way forward, create your connections yourself...Let him be a 'technical adviser'.

Remember, one of the guiding principles of Ph.D program: Candidate must have the ability to do research independently.
