Why You Should Probably Drop Out Of A Nigerian Uni And Learn To Code. by ReactJs(m): 5:48am On May 28, 2021 |
After going through this thread https://www.nairaland.com/6572647/thinking-dropping-out-college-focus , I realized that in the coming years, there's still going to be a large % unemployed and ignorant youths. I have never seen a group of people to afraid to take risks and generally pessimistic in my entire life! How do you people not know that times have changed and even in this country, especially the emerging tech industry in Nigeria, you DO NOT NEED a Bsc to work. I dropped out of 2 federal universities because i realized very early in my life that there's a difference between schooling and education and that a time will come that society is gonna need actual EDUCATED people. I'll leave you to figure out what it means to be educated cuz it seems like a lot of you guys really think you're educated. You're being Schooled that's why we're where we are as a country. if 60% of the youths are actually educated, Nigeria will probably be a better place. First uni, I studied biochemistry and 2nd uni i studied zoology. I saw that all of these courses didn't align with the trajectory i envisaged and i took a conscious decision to change my path. it wasn't easy but here i am today. A friend that didn't even bother going to university at all. He started learning immediately we left sec school in surulere. i recently met him in victoria island and he's a goddamn big boy. A complete senior developer at his workplace. All of my friends back then in school are doing one thing or the other just to make ends meet and only just a few are doing relatively well. I am not mocking anyone but a lot of you just really need to stop viewing life in binary terms. Before i got a job, i interviewed with about 3 companies in this Lagos and not one, not a single one made mention or even asked me about a Bsc. I've interviewed with firms in Brooklyn and Amsterdam, they never asked me for a degree. You people really need to wake up o. I've been an instructor for over a year at a well-known bootcamp in lagos. Majority of my weekend students were bankers, accountants and all other types of people looking to get into the tech ecosystem. Times have changed and you people better understand this. 13 Likes 2 Shares |

YouTube is a better school than our universities. A reorientation is needed starting from our parents. 11 Likes |

javaguru: No word of a lie boss. it was just really infuriating seeing a lot of people kill that guys confidence cuz they don't know any better. If i had gave in to fear and what people said then, I'll probably be teaching in a school or working in bank or just a profession that's not scalable. no disrespect to people working these jobs though. but if you know better, you just have to do better. 1 Like 1 Share |

Op I don't believe in the university like you but dropping out is a foolish decision especially for a Nigerian. Don't allow yourself to be deceived that degree is important even if it's a third class degree. No one cares about your grade just have a degree. You can take the risk if you plan to stay in Nigeria working for max 300k a month or some remote jobs but if you want to leave Nigeria via means of work you can't bypass any developed country's immigration without a degree. It doesn't matter what your degree is in or what grade you have. Just have a degree. 17 Likes 1 Share |

Bad advice. First you can learn to code while studying whatever course in the university, and second, being without a university degree in this country will rob you of countless opportunities, don't let anyone deceive you. 5 Likes |

tensazangetsu20: That’s a big lie boss. A very big one in fact! What are you even saying. Bro i have 2 friends in Frankfurt and Berlin. They both got jobs from here and i know them personally they do not have degrees. I trust you know HNG internship right? A top guy there that i know personally is also in Germany. He left Ambrose Ali. These jobs with options to relocate literally take care of everything for you. 4 Likes 1 Share |

Either a degree is useless or not. It doesn't hurt if you have it. Besides there's a satisfaction that comes with having a degree than not having one. It doesn't stop you from learning programming. 3 Likes |

ReactJs:Yeah bro, I quite understand that coding falls within the tech industry, and opportunities in this area are usually dependent majorly on competence. But what do you do when you find yourself competing someone else with the same skill set in addition to university degrees? Sometimes you may not even get to be shortlisted without the necessary paper qualifications, especially in this country. What I'm saying in essence is, if you have the means and opportunity to get the degree, do not ignore it. A graduate/postgraduate programmer will always be respected and paid more than an SSCE holder programmer anywhere, except you develop your own apps or set up your own company. 3 Likes |

I too dropped out of BioChem. Just began a small soap business. I prefer low level coding and C is my prefered language. I will tell my future self....don't drop out. It's not easy learning the advanced math on your own coupled with a nagging father. My PC and Mobile is due for replacement, but i don't want to kpai kpatakpata financially. I hope my soap biz grows so i can further my programming. Bottom line....if your people no gallant, this is a very bad idea. 2 Likes |

Excallibur: I mean!! I really don’t get these narratives that a lot of people push here that and education (even if it’s a Nigerian education) is useless. How? For what? Are the only roles in IT, programming roles that the whole of Nigeria should drop out and learn to code? There’s Technical writing that a graduate of English can excel in. Remote coding roles aren’t the only remote roles available abeg! Be excellent at what you decide to study and the jobs will come. How many people are fortunate to get the so-called remote roles? Are they easy to get? Abeg if you are in Uni or planning to get into Uni, go ahead! Learn other skills on the side (especially now with ASUU giving you guys “free” time). Don’t let the few “successful” remote workers derail you. Any employer will pick a competent graduate over a competent secondary school holder. It’s all about value addition. Good to be back after a few days of absence 9 Likes 1 Share |

GrantIkenna: Facts and I’m a living witness. I know I have a reputation in these NL programming streets. But many people don’t know I was a drop out. Dropped out of a foreign Uni sef where I was studying Computer Science. My mum (God rest her soul) NEVER accepted that. Dragged me back to Naija and put me in a Nigerian Uni. I was in my mid twenties when I went back to school (Private Uni). I was at least 10 years older than my coursemates! But that singular act of getting a degree opened a lot of doors for me. My first job was because I was a graduate. I was more mature and more focused as an older student so by the time I was graduating at 30 I already knew where I wanted to go. I also had a family that you could say had the means. We weren’t rich but could afford more than the basics. That already put me at some advantage. I could afford to get a raspberry pi as far back as 2014 to play around with. Having that kind of “luxury” meant I could learn a lot of stuff on my own without worrying about hunger or a roof over my head. I could afford to spend hours experimenting. DONT DROP OUT OF SCHOOL. Please do not. Discipline yourself and go through the process. You’d be a better person in the end 12 Likes 2 Shares |

Another day, another thread selling people the pipe dream that tech is the solution to all problems while simultaneously sh!tting on every profession that powers the world. Quite the thread in the middle of the US stock crash and multiple layoffs in thousands in the tech industry. With speculations of the tech bubble bursting and all the tech money going down the drain If you're in school, get a degree! if you want still want to learn to code do so while getting a degree. You pay next to nothing getting a degree in Nigeria, so why the hell are you skipping on one. Also, the tech industry is so much bigger than just developers, for christ's sake make una try branch out into other stuffs Finally, getting a remote job is really hard. Ask those who have tried getting one, most of them are remotely locked to the EU or North America and those that aren't will have you competing with on a global scale. It's not as easy as people here make it seem. From experience though, people no dey hear word, its better y'all get to experience it yourself 8 Likes 1 Share |
