NIGERIA SHOULD BE RENAMED AS BIAFRA

Only recently, there was a proposal for Nigeria to be renamed to the United African Republic (UAR). It is trending and has become a source of jokes on social media.

Asides the difficulty in figuring out what citizens of this UAR will be called (UARians, Uraniums or Urines?), there is the disconcerting resemblance of this proposed UAR name to the defunct United Arab Republic that existed in the Middle East between 1958 to 1971.

Perhaps there is no Islamic or Arabic agenda behind the UAR name proposal. Yet with the rising fears of Islamization in Nigeria, the new name UAR seems dead-on-arrival. That is why we suggest a better and more beffiting name: THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF BIAFRA

Why should Nigeria be renamed as BIAFRA?

There are several reasons why BIAFRA is the best new name for Nigeria, chief amongst which is that the "Bight of Biafra" was on old maps of Africa long before Frederick Luggard and his girlfriend Flora Shaw set their feet here.

Secondly, if the Federal Government of Nigeria and Buhari-led administration could officially proclaim JUNE 12 as the new Democracy Day to placate the Old Western region, don't you agree that renaming this country BIAFRA to placate the Old Eastern region will demonstrate fairness and equity?

Lastly, the name BIAFRA will heal the festering wounds caused by the 1967 to 1970 civil war and honour the over one million people who were killed in that tragedy.

We are magnanimous enough, however, not to request that Nigeria also adopts the Biafran flag. We only think it would make sense for the logo of the rising sun on a black background be used to replace the white portion on the current flag to reflect a new dawn.

That new dawn must make room for true federalism, restructuring and resource control if the sun of our country is to shine brightly in the committee of nations.
