I never believed in absolute free speech because words hurt... Both twitter and Buhari's government acted out of order. Something of both actions been stupid.

In essence you admit its a wrong decision to mute the voices of 200million people and trample on their fundamental rights because a tweet was deleted?

I've seen several celebrities delete their social media accounts when they feel they have been offended or their rights violated.

In a democracy would it not have been more sensible for the presidency to delete his account and order his ministers to follow suit in protest rather than ban a whole platform from innocent Nigerians

So what next? Ban CNN and BBC when they report news unfavorable to the government? Why doesn't the government register their complaints on the behaviour of Twitter with the US government instead and ask them to intervene

Let's be calming down please. Yes the government has every right to express their displeasure but this could have been better handled.
There are less than 2million Nigerians on Twitter (including duplicated Account). That's less than 1% of our population.
When an international organization becomes a law unto itself (sentimentally and hypocriticlly determining what is right or wrong with double standard) and a willing tool in the hands of terrorist and purveyors of hate and fake news, then the government is left with no other options than to maintain law and order.

It looks like only self-proclaimed activists are criticizing the Nigerian government for suspending Twitter, cos from the tweets I have been reading online, especially those of Non-Nigerians, people are not happy with Twitter at all.

Bruno Maçães, for example...

lol look at the mediocre road side nameless council manager called politician they are brandishing meanwhile more important notable world renowned politicians have condemned the preposterous inglorious disgraceful ban .. but no those don’t give them erections ..

I just they laugh..

Maintain law and order by trampling on the fundamental rights of Nigerians over the deletion of a tweet? Could this not have been better handled diplomatically? This is just akin to throwing the baby away with the bathwater.

No fundamental human right was trampled upon, if there's any, it's the right of the president of the largest black nation that was trampled upon, by deleting his "arguably harmless tweet" while leaving the field open for terrorist and enemies of the state to peddle their false and propaganda thereby inciting people to take up arms to kill and destroy...The use of twitter is not a right, and the right to freedom of expression does not start nor end with Twitter. Before Twitter Nigerians expressed themselves and after Twitter Nigerians will still do as we are doing on this platform.

Only a person with no brain will subscribe or support this foolish statement. If Buhari and his foolish officials don't like Twitter, they are free to deactivate their accounts. It is illegal banning Nigerians access to information and ability to express their freedom of speech.

Am sorry if American collectively disrespect their president it's their choice not a standard.
What they did is wrong pls don't allow your dislike or hatred cloud our judgement.

You have the traditional "African" mentality that dates back to the pre-colonial era of seeing our leaders as ennobled beings sitting on their thrones and entitled to respect, like our traditional kings/monarchs/rulers.

A president in the 21st century is a public servant, or at least ought to be, and the utterances of a public servant should not be inflammatory or be capable of being interpreted as promoting genocide/human rights violation.

To suggest that the Americans should become more like us in the standards they hold their presidency to is profoundly ignorant. If you want to apply ancient African standards, then remove all the vestiges of Western-style governance - stop calling the head of state "president" and choose a title like Emir or Sarduana, abolish the constitution and stop holding elections. That way we know we have a traditional king who deserves to be "respected" by all and sundry and who can say what he wants in any medium.

Freedom of association was and is enshrined in the constitution. Whether the tweet was harmless or not is open to debate. I've seen BBC describe it as genocidal but that's neither here nor there. So what if tomorrow BBC posts an opinion or news story not in the government's Favour, will they also then ban BBC?

This morning I saw a post somehere that the first lady Aisha Buhari deleted her Twitter account why has the government and president not followed suit Why drag innocent Nigerians into it? Many Nigerians make a livelihood via Twitter by advertising their products on the platform. What becomes of them?

Brother this is a democracy let's try to resolve issues by dialogue as much as possible.

Truth be told I really don't disagree with what you wrote,it may actual b the solution to our problem as we are trying to fit oursef to a system that basically n obviously not working for us.
Anyway Nigeria govt has every right to regulate whoeva operate witin it's space. Twitter has its policies as well

See another myopic one here. So, Michelin, Solgas, Dunlop, UAC, PZ, Wilbros, Amazon, Nigerite etc are all USA companies or licencees too? Was it USA that said they should relocate to Ghana and dump Nigeria? Shamefully, these great companies still send their products to Nigeria to sell. You'd even be worse than buhari if you had the opportunity of being on the corridor of power. Now I concur on the lazy youths he called your likes.

Baba needs to close that border again, imagine Ghana closed their border to stop Nigerian drinks and bottled water from coming into Ghana.
I know this because I'm into African tourism business.
The government of Ghana is protecting their local industry, they are protecting the few available jobs.
Nigerian yourhs don't know simple economics, imagine Nigerians wants to import virtually anything into the country and still want jobs.
Now industries that are supposed to be expanding and employing more workers, are either down sizing or closing down because of unfair competition.
I'm really sorry for this country, this is why I support the disintegration of this country.
The level of stupidity here is sine qua non.

it was accumulated exodus from the PDP days. It was only worse off during the apc administration. Just yesterday, a couple of uk firms threatened to leave Nigeria unless forex becomes available to them by the govt. Tell me if you need proofs of this or you need a list of companies who left between 2015 and 2020 alone and I'd provide the list. Those who left during the last administrations were a tip of the iceberg. What this administration promised was to woo investors and create enabling environment rather, investors are leaving en masse and the environment isn't secure for investors to operate.

Bring the list.

And Buhari also hold the right to determine what's best for Nigeria by suspending Twitter indefinitely in his domain. We can all be mad together.
If a single man (jack) can unilaterally determine what's permissible or not with his brazen double standard and hypocrisy then a government of over 200M people (voted into power by over 15M voters) also possess the right to kick their ass off.
If they ban Nairaland, nobody will read your comment.
