My observation:

All these foreign elements would bark at weaker countries, especially African,in the name of human rights. But they dare not do same to super powers like China and South Korea.
Is Nigeria the only country restricting the excesses of Twitter?

What is wrong in a temporary ban to register displeasure with a foreign information platform? Is Twitter the only means of communication in Nigeria?

When Twitter suspend your account due to violations, what happens to UN chatter on human rights?

I may be twitting secretly, but I stand firmly with my country's leadership on this.Let those foreign elements mind their business.

Can Nigeria dare interfere in any internal policy of these foreign countries? Are they all perfect on human rights?

Yes, the white do have a say in this . People should please stop comparing Nigeria to countries that are far independent and have earned global economy respect.

A lender will always be a king unto a borrower, you can't flex muscle when you are always a begger as a country .

I bet you, it would only take 3 month to decimate Nigeria economy or country as a whole with international sanctions too. Only if the white really mean us for evil.

Nigeria economy is struggling very badly with zero basic standard infrastructures. It citizen's are now feeling the recoil effects . This condition will directly always incite violence, hatred and nepotism among it's people.

May God save Nigeria.

Beneficiary of the decadence. You deserve current Nigeria, but my kids do not. The country will either change for the better and benefit everyone regardless of tribe and creed or we go our separate ways.

It is absolutely ludicrous that the beneficiaries of the rot will think their hegemonic and lopsided domination will continue forever. Even the caucacian colonialists and neo-colonialists have since realized that the oppressor just has to loosen the grip on the neck of those they oppress, if the oppressor wants to breathe easy too.

The Fulani and pro fulani hegemonic structure is too reluctant to loosen the grip on the neck of the South. We know our 'founding fathers' in the South led us into servitude, but slavery has expiry date o!

You mean North Korea. South Korea doesn't do this, as they're a democracy:

https://www.socialbakers.com/statistics/twitter/profiles/south-korea

And nowhere in this life has North Korea come anywhere close to being a "super
power"

And yes, both China and North Korea have been widely recognized as fascist dictatorships with numerous human rights abuses, and sanctions have been heaped on both of them. The same sanctions that will destroy Nigerian citizens and make life even more miserable for them. The same sanctions that have further crippled North Korean citizens on top of the dictatorship they're suffering from.

Doyin2:

Africans think!
What does a private company deleting an ill-advised tweet on their own platform that violates their agreed-upon TOS have to do with the "UN charter on human rights"?

They not only deleted the tweets of, but also outright BANNED a sitting president of the United States, and neither the US nor the UN did anything to them because they realized that this is a platform from a private company in which Trump clicked the checkmark on their "terms and agreements" page when he signed up to use their service.

The same thing Twitter has done to millions of their users around the world who also have violated their TOS.

Did either Twitter or the US come and arrest Buhari?

Did Twitter attempt to kill Buhari?

Was Buhari not still free to tweet again after 12 hours?

Was Buhari bigger than Trump?

Was Buhari's money or Nigerian money used to set up Twitter?

Did Buhari not use Twitter for free?

Did Buhari not agree to their TOS when signing up to use their service?

Haved this very Nairaland that you're posting on not banned people violating their rules and deleted their posts?

Did Facebook not also delete Buhari's posts? Is Facebook also going to be banned as well, and Nigerians using it prosecuted and thrown in jail?

Is Twitter owned by the US government or is it a private company?

Does a personal issue arising from ONE user violating a private company's TOS require dragging 200 million million Nigerians into it?

Buhari only had his tweet deleted and not only was he free to continue living his life, but he was even free to continue using the service afterwards. Meanwhile, because of this, not only has Twitter been completely banned for 200 million Nigerians (including those who depend on it for their livelihood), the government (a GOVERNMENT, not a private organization) is even trying to arrest and prosecute anyone using the app. Is THAT not the human rights violation? Is this what we're supposed to call "African thinking"? huh

Who did worse to Nigerians in this situation: Twitter or Buhari?

It is either you lack the understanding of the international politics you mentioned or you are so myopic to to see extent farther than your nose.

Is it about how the citizens of African countries relate with the “other countries” or how the African leaders relate with the “countries”?

How can you explain a family whose father only depends on the activities, loans and gift from another families for the survival of himself and his homes?
Who would the children of such home see as the reason for their existence, their father or the fathers in other homes who their father having be running to and begging for what they need for survival?.

I won’t ask more than that for now to test your intellectual reasoning.
The essence of public discuss is not an intellectual contest, only childish persons do that, it's essence is bring enlightenment and shape decisions.

That being said, while we've depended so much on the outside world for sustenance and survival, it does not mean we should relegate our sense of being as a people, or condone with being slighted upon.

Am I in tandem with Buhari's administration, no way on the economic and security front. However the stunt by Twitter seeks to put a dent on the highest office in land and by extension Africa, people who do not seem to understand our culture or the challenges bedeviling us, equally they made sure Africa remain like this, and you want us to condone with slight?

Are you aware that the Ajeokuta steel plant was delibrately frustrated by the west, bkos it's development was significant to continent, making us to compete on par with the west on that front, are you also aware of the structural adjustment program enforced in the 1980s to cripple African economies on the devaluation of their currencies to make sure the countries remain beggarly?

Your continent has been pillaged but you seem not be aware, African leaders who seek to bring monumental changes to their countries are assassinated, point in case Thomas Sankara amongst a host of other, that time will fail me to mention.

There will also be a requirement to remove and limit the spread of terrorist material suicide content and child sexual abuse, which they would need to report to the authorities.

Those companies which fail to do so face hefty fines from regulator Ofcom which can also block access to their sites.

https://www.reuters.com/technology/uk-unveils-law-fine-social-media-firms-which-fail-remove-online-abuse-2021-05-11/
To start with, the UK crying and shouting in support of twitter just put up their own social media law that threatens to shut down Twitter for the same thing Nigeria shut down Twitter for, the spread of terrorist materials.

Accountability is the consequence when you don't obey laws or respond to government warnings and that consequence is what the British government just proposed, a total ban, exactly what Nigeria did.

So, is the UK primitive per their social media laws (The same social media law that you lowly and backward thinking Africans in Nigeria rejected) that stipulates the same ban for the same violations twitter got banned for here in Nigeria.?

Low self-esteem and inferiority complex people like you think when the white man does it, they are civilized, but when you poor Africans do the same thing, you are all of a sudden barbaric.

You try to sound intelligent, but you actuallu sound ignorant and unintelligent.
Re: US, UK, EU Envoys Reject FG Position On Twitter Ban After Meeting by plaindealer: 8:52am On Jun 08, 2021
Online companies must start taking responsibility for their platforms, and help restore public trust in this technology,” Prime Minister Theresa May said in a statement.

The measures would apply to social media, file hosting sites, chat forums, messaging services and search engines.

Companies stand to face tough punishments under the proposed policies if they do not comply. “We are consulting on powers to issue substantial fines, block access to sites and potentially to impose liability on individual members of senior management,” the government said in its statement.

https://time.com/5565843/united-kingdom-social-media-regulations/
Grand hypocrisy of the white man.

When they draft their social media laws with stipulations to ban social media platforms, it is not censorship, it's not barbaric or against freedom of speech, but when they do the same thing in Africa, it's all of a sudden a violation of everything under the sun.

Sadly, poor Africans especially the ones in Nigeria feel so inferior that they can not even draft the same kinds of laws to protect their own country and citizens, this is why the developed countries stay developed and poor and backward thinking African countries stay underdeveloped.

This government is the most useless and irresponsible government I have witness. They are not active in solving insecurity and social economic issue that has brought the country to his knee. Killings in Nigeria is known to be like bread and butter. They just killed about 15 to 20 people in Igangan in Oyo state instead of he soldiers to go comb the forest and arrest the killer they were preventing the people from moving into the forest to pursue the killers. They were like defending the killers.

Thank God you know this and stop being hypocritical. Cos I wonder what it means to say someone you don’t know doesn’t have the understanding of international politics.

That being said, while we've depended so much on the outside world for sustenance and survival, it does not mean we should relegate our sense of being as a people, or condone with being slighted upon.
Can one imagine this?
A continent relegates her sense and ego, dropping all its ancestral, local and mental resources to rely on chunks dropping from the table of other continents. If you really understand what sense is, would that really happen?
A continent relies on other continents for survival and still runs to them for solution on a little problem which could be solved at home. What else could that be likened to be if not mental slavery?
What moral justification has Buhari to force patriotism on us, when all his children could not study in Nigeria, even to study and learn photography?
Even a slight headache, London is the destination for treatment

Am I in tandem with Buhari's administration, no way on the economic and security front. However the stunt by Twitter seeks to put a dent on the highest office in land and by extension Africa, people who do not seem to understand our culture or the challenges bedeviling us, equally they made sure Africa remain like this, and you want us to condone with slight?
First of all, Was Buhari mandated to open a twitter handle?
Twitter is someone’s personal business, free entry and exit and not a monopolized media of information transportation.
If you are not satisfied with their terms and conditions, take your exit.
Buhari didn’t bring Twitter to Nigeria, so he can’t take it away from us. What we are experiencing is a show of ego.
Twitter is housed in US, it deleted the tweets of the then US President, Donald Trump and also banned him from posting, Trump didn’t hammer twitter cos of that. All he thought was getting an alternative platform to convey his information.

How did the issue start?
President Buhari made twitter posts which some Nigerians felt offensive and threat to their existence and they launched a great protest for the post to be deleted, it was deleted so what is bad in that?

Are you aware that the Ajeokuta steel plant was delibrately frustrated by the west, bkos it's development was significant to continent, making us to compete on par with the west on that front, are you also aware of the structural adjustment program enforced in the 1980s to cripple African economies on the devaluation of their currencies to make sure the countries remain beggarly?
Imagine!
This is why Africa will never develop. Daily wailing against the West and developed countries.
Please erase this you just posted. It makes us in African appear senseless.
A project was started by a civilian administration and the military toppled the government, took over and abandoned all the project set in motion by the toppled government for a long time, yet you still blame the West.
I understand that even if you can’t impregnate your wife in Africa, it is the West.
In life there are forces which work for and against the development of matters, it depends on you to find a way around the forces against

Your continent has been pillaged but you seem not be aware, African leaders who seek to bring monumental changes to their countries are assassinated, point in case Thomas Sankara amongst a host of other, that time will fail me to mention.

In life if you don't define how people should treat you, you'll be doormat.
Everyone is able to point to Thomas Sankara cos he died prematurely. Many African leaders with premature death were so lucky to be considered heroes and heroines cos they didn’t have the long term to exude their flaws.
If Buhari wasn’t given the chance to rule again, many Nigerians will still be of the opinion that he was never given the chance to develop Nigeria, thinking he has the ability to do so.

The growth of Africa doesn’t lie in the ability of the leaders to oppose the West or stand against anything White, but the utilization of the local potentials (human and natural) and bilateral trade (not “indebtable” loans or charity from the West or Orients) with the west or whosoever to technically and psychologically fend off the West from her affairs.

"Stunt"?

You mean the same "stunt" (or even worse) they did to Trump?

Did the US government consider that an attack on the US? Did the US ban Twitter?

The same "stunt" they (a private company, not a government or government organization) have done to millions of their other users (including Africans) around the world who have violated their TOS? Outside of the likes of North Korea and China, which have banned ALL foreign social media (and even foreign websites in general, not just Twitter) for the purposes of information control on their population, cracking down on their citizens, cutting their citizens off from the outside world and propaganda, which of the countries containing all of those millions of TOS-violating users banned Twitter?

Facebook also deleted Buhari's posts. Was that also a "stunt"? Will Facebook also be banned?

When the mods here on Nairaland delete posts and ban people for violating rules they agree to when signing up, is that also a "stunt"? Is Nairaland trying to put a "dent" in Nigerians and Africans when doing so?

So African leaders bear absolutely no responsibility for the current state of Africa? So what is the purpose of them seeking political office?

Right now, our leaders want to arrest and jail people for using a simple app. An app some were using to provide financial opportunities for themselves that the government never provided them. Is that not putting a "dent" in Nigerians?

If our leaders in Nigeria use this, of all things, to try flex muscles on these countries, then exactly what standing or grounds will they have to go back running to these same countries doing and taking advantage of the below? (And you KNOW they will continue doing so):

KRSWon:
your leaders travel outside of the country to utilize those countries' healthcare industry instead of fixing the broken healthcare in this country (reminder that the NHS in the UK is not only world-class compared to whatever's in Nigeria, it's also FREE ), they purchase their luxury cars from those countries (while the ordinary citizens purchase their tukunboh busted hand-me-downs from those countries), they purchase weapons and military equipment from these countries, they purchase iPhones from these countries, the electronics they and you use come from these countries, Nigerian airlines purchase airliners from these countries, Nigerian businesses and schools purchase their software from these countries, the social media platforms you and they use come from these countries (including the very same Twitter that the people who came up with and implemented this ban are STILL using), they beg for foreign aid from these countries, the the money they embezzle from Nigeria and Nigerian taxpayers go to offshore accounts in these countries and are used to purchase real estate properties and luxury goods in those countries, instead of fixing and investing in education here they send their children to go school in those countries, they import medicine and vaccines from these countries (and then sometimes hoard them), the search engines you use to browse the Internet come from these countries, and they and you are using the global network that AMERICANS created to post online right this minute (the Internet, created by Tim Berners-Lee and DARPA).

I understand your position, and in no small way we have myriads of fundamental problems as a continent, and especially as a country.

Offkos, African leader's are the champions of our problems even though we might have had external interference in our governments. These countries capitalize on their greed for political positions, and they end up selling the continent short.

It now behooves on those us who are young to change the narrative, in the no distance future, I wrote an article as regards that.

However, while Twitter is a private entity, it should learn to apply diplomacy in dealing with governments, the Buhari and Trump scenario are two different examples, Trump encouraged violence, something a person of his office shouldn't do. Buhari spoke in harsh terms, which is subject to different interpretations, when issues like this come up, let seek to know the motive and be objective.

I can read multiple meaning to any statement you make, but if your motive and objectives is closely looked, we could get your true meaning. The statement was, "we will treat them in the language they understand" I watched the video but didn't read the tweet, from that video, he was citing the police killing (people who are bread weaners to different families), burning down of infrastructures (which we barely have as a country) before he arrived at that statement while speaking about Unknown Gun men, judging from that, does that place a slight on any ethnic group, objectively speaking?

I have extensively studied the civil war, I mean it's bad and there was a lot of injustices, but taking discussions out of context, is a crime, in my opinion. Buhari has not made a brilliant leader, but pls don't tell me Twitter understand our difference in this country, equally those who promoted the sanctions on the tweet had there own intentions, and remember Buhari has never been a fan of that region, equally the region don't seem to be captured by his fancy, but as the president you are for all, and you should be mindful of how you speak, bkos different inference can be made from one statement.

Long story short: Africa should learn to define her future. Simple.
