This is where our problems lies, read, write and pass exams to celebrate grades. The next thing is CV everywhere. We need to change our institutions curriculum to rank with our counterparts. God
Please help us. Congrat in advance... 2:1 is still cool.

This is our final semester here in school. Today, I was in a deep conversation with a group of my course mates, and we were talking about our performance and grades so far in school. Being their best student they were shocked to hear me tell them that I'm actually on a 2:1 and not a 1:1 and specifically within the range of 4.25 to 4.3 cgpa. Their Shock also shocked me lols grin. Like what were they thinking? And somehow they were disappointed too.

As for me I don't care about their thoughts or opinion about the subject matter, I'm not from a rich home perse, so most at times I spend my time on things that will put money in my pocket rather than books to survive here in school. I even barely read my books, but I'm a very fast learner when I grab a book.

They couldn't fathom why I couldn't make a first class even when they considered me a genius. Anyways, that doesn't matter, maybe some other time in the nearest future things like this won't matter any more. I simply wish myself the very best in life. Graduating top of my class is not an easy feat and I thank God for that. If any of those 1:1 students embark on 10% of
the thingss I do in campus to survy, they will find it difficult making a 2:1 not to talk of a 1:1. So I'm really proud of myself. Glory be to God. Amen!

What's the bragging about?

Finish and enter the real world, na there we go know where ya 4.sh will take u.

And before any idiot vomit trash here, I am successful in all ramifications that you will be even scared to dream about.

is your school in Nigeria? If yes, 1st class is useless in this part of the world, atlest you have better chance with 2:1.

Trust me my brother after a while it won't matter much. It would just be something in the distant past. Like someone else said, so many things determine success in life. Time and chance happens to us all. Currently, the most successful of us all in our set is not a first class graduate. In fact I don't know where two of our first class graduates are now. Their trail have gone cold. The last one is doing fine, but not spectacular like someone still in school would naively think. Another 4 pointer finished school and started selling gas. Though people's words towards him later made him stop and seek for other jobs. The rest "proud" 4 pointers have all gone cold. So guy forget.

One thing you need to learn is how to stop making excuses for yourself when you come short of expectations in life.

There are people who went through hell in school, and still finished with a first class degree.

I finished with a first class degree, but I was not the best graduating student. The best graduating student of my set was over 30 years old. He was the one sponsoring his own education. He would teach WAEC lessons, go to Moniya to do okada, depending on his shift as a security guard. He also had younger ones whom he was sponsoring. They all became orphans very early in life and he has been a provider since he was a teenager.

So, stop making excuses for yourself. Rather, accept your fate.

First class degree is good. It gives one bragging rights. But it doesn't give information on who is a genius or not. It doesn't say that someone has more potential than another.

A person with a third class degree may have better problem-solving skill than someone with a first class degree. This means that some people with third class degrees are more employable than some people with first class degrees.

Truly, I admire your level of sincerity and open mindedness. People often have the habits of placing huge demands & expectations on others without knowing what maybe their burden privately. I had similar experience. But in all, I like the fact that your interest is already on what will bring money to the table because at the end, that is what matters. Especially now that paper is useless in the Nigeria labour market.

You are absolutely right on this. The guy that graduated with a third class in our class is one of the biggest boys among us. This guy stood as a financial sureties for 2 of our classmates to study abroad few years ago. To note, he was not a fraudster or into shading business. He dusted himself and went to study something else. That is how he made it in life.

Our first class product was even teaching in a secondary school at a point. The guy shamefully went to India to do his post graduate study.

Life is a mystery.

From what I've seen, 1:1 or 2:1 is practically useless if you don't have any proof that you can work in the real world (certification/skills) or connects if you want to limit your job hunts to Nigeria.

A third class with several certification has a better chance of getting employed/self-employed than a la cram la pour first class graduate with nothing but "my lecturers taught me..."

Let me give you my experience. I graduated 16years ago with a 2.1, in my class i was the third best graduating student at that time. My brother the first shock i had in the real world was when i was laid off from the bank in 2009. I was thinking with my class of degree e go easy bros na lie oooo. After school it is when you realise that the grades don't really tell if you would succeed in life. My advice get hands on certifications and gather experience to increase your chances of being employable.

Lol. Your story is a complete replica of mine. I made a 2,1 and most of my ex class mates expected a first class since I topped my set back in the days.

But my drop was due to some perculiar reasons though. I had the best CGPA in the school during my first year in the school (4.92) but got an F (missing result that was never found) in a 3 unit course and a C in a 4unit course (completely due to typist error) that dropped my CGPA to 4.2.

Despite having all first class (semesterials) in all but two semesters, I barely graduated with a 4.43.

The thing is as long as you are a first class at heart, do not worry about grades because anything above 4.00 is fantastic. I have enjoyed 3 undergraduate scholarships, overseas PTDF for masters, worked for one of the big fours, and currently working in a good company.

Baba it is what is in your head that counts. I say this with confidence because of my own experience. I have beaten first class graduates in aptitude tests, interview and scholarships (but I have equally met first classes and even 2,1s that were also “intellectually superior” too so it is a balance). Truth is if you are good...you’re good. It doesn’t matter your grade. Only that some very few scholarships require first class grade but then there are other, or perhaps, even more superior scholarships that don’t segregate against grades. For instance, I was just as you are, worried about not making a first class because I was eyeing Presid-scholarship during GEJ’s tenure that was meant for only first class graduates but I eventually got PTDF scholarship that had better perks than it

Guy,

One thing I know and have experienced in life is that you will get to where you're destined for whether you have a 1st class or not. I also was the best student in my class and even made a 1:1 till I got to early 300L, eventually we had only one first class student in the final year who came in through DE so on average he beat me since he didn't have to aggregate non-existent 100L grades.

Recently after almost 17 years, a classmate was gisting with me that he still didn't understand why I didn't make a 1:1 but then I told him that at this point in my life the 1st class would make no impact since I am at the top level in my career path, I also reminded him of some 1:1 students we know who never amounted to much that we expected after school.

So my advise to the OP is to focus on your career, pray and the best options would find you 1:1 or not. Truth be told, making a 1:1 in a public Nigerian university depends much on the lecturers and at times has nothing to do with how smart you are, e.g. if the lecturer no like you he go just dey give you B where you suppose get an A. So why limit yourself based on what is at best man's biased assessment of your talents? God pass dem all and he's got your back best believe!

It isn't really easy graduating with 2.1sef. I remember when I gained admission in the university,I promised myself that I would graduate with nothing less than a first class but after my first semester gp was released and I made 3.25 I became discouraged,my 200l was the worst I made 2.27 since then I no dey take school matter serious,I enter business to dey see money.
By the way I must confess that women were the reasons I had a low cgpa in my 200l. I was always going around campus during lecturing hours pursuing girls and taking them to the best canteens with money meant for my handouts(I too mumu back then) and this ladies no dey even let me touch them.
But I thank God now for my life, after spending money on years to improve my approaching skills, I laid my hands on "ultimate guide to give extraordinary female orgasms" and it changed my life,it taught me how to speak to ladies to put sexual thoughts in her head and her to hit her hard in the bedroom. Now I have ladies at my beck and call. Check my signature to get a copy.
I need call sukirat, better cold dey.

Please do not subtly downplay the importance of excellent grades!

Graduating with excellent grades just makes things easier for you. It grants you access to incredible opportunities. It provides the platform you need to explore limited opportunities.

So please by all means, go for excellent grades.
