Living Cheap In Lagos by Jamestown123: 11:28am On Jun 08, 2021
We all know Lagos is the most expensive city to Live in Nigeria, and also one of the toughest city to survive in Nigeria. Of course Lagos is a mega and glamorous city to Live in, because of it's endless opportunities and connection's, which makes everybody wants to move to Lagos. Lagos city has a population of over 25 million or even more, it's estimated that an average of two persons comes to Lagos in every minute, and 80% of them never goes back. Surviving in Lagos is really tough, especially when you don't really have a meaningful job to do, most people in Lagos survive on an average salary of 20,000 naira per month and 240,000 naira per year, which exchange for 40 dollars per month and 489 dollars per year. Now you will be very surprised and might be wondering how do people live on this kind of money in a big and expensive city like Lagos? Well as someone who has experience or has passed through that stage before, I would say it's really tough and also exciting, because you get to learn the habit of saving and spending wisely. Well living in a city where everything is expensive except for transportation, did someone just exclaimed transportation?? Yeah transportation in Lagos is cheap compared to other cities Nigeria, because with 300 to 400 naira I can take a bus from Anthony village in mainland to Ajah around the island, compared to taking a bus from nsukka town to Enugu city for 500 to 700 naira. In anyway to check it, transportation in Lagos is cheaper than other cities except for Ubers and taxis.

Renting an apartment or a room in Lagos is very though and expensive, because you will have to compete with at least a million people seeking to also rent a place to call home. Now how will someone with a salary of 20,000 naira rent a room in Lagos? Rents in major neighborhoods and areas in Lagos for a single room cost around 50,000 to 200,000 naira a year depending on the area, street and house. Before renting a room in Lagos, you will have to go through an agent who will take an agency fee of 10 to 40% of the rent, and then another 10 to 40% for his commission. You might start wondering how then I'm I going to rent a room with a salary of 20,000? As someone who has gone through same experience, always find a partner to split the cost with. Sometimes 3 or 4 people can pull resources to gather to rent just a room of 60,000 naira. And if you feel you can rent it alone with a salary of 20,000 naira then it will have to take you about a whole year to rent an apartment of 50,000 naira, except you came into Lagos with enough cash to start afresh. Areas you can rent a room for 50,000 to 200,000 in Lagos, around the mainland, we have Ikorodu, ketu, mile 12, ojota, Anthony, yaba, onipanu, fadeyi, agege, oshodi and other areas within. If it's around the Lagos island, we have Ajah, obalande sangotedo, cms and environs.

Food cost. Food stuffs in Lagos are expensive, and fund consuming you don't plan well. With someone collecting an average salary of 20,000 to 30,000 naira in Lagos, your best bet is to always buy your own food stuffs and cook at home. They are a lot of big markets in Lagos to buy food stuffs from, from mile 12, to ketu,to oshodi down to Ikorodu they have big markets to always buy foodstuffs around the mainland. Cms, idumota, obalande down to Ajah have bigs markets that are always open 7 days in a week. You can always split the food cost with your room mates to make things easier. Whatever you do, always try and save, because Lagos is not for the faint hearted.

Anyone can adds their own contribution to help others. Tell ours how you are surviving in Lagos with a salary of 20,000 naira to 50,000 naira. We will also be talking about where to buy clothes and wares from, areas to stay and look for a job, and most available jobs in Lagos.
