Although true he said that, but I feel punch is emphasising the sensational part over the economic reason he provided which is a fair point.

Niger has no access to the sea and if Nigeria gets its act together infrastructurallyn, we will be the preferred route for Nigerien oil (and uranium). Imagine the attendant jobs and revenue that will accrue to Nigeria as a result of this. Not to speak of the geopolitical influence.

China is currently reviving the ancient silk road that connected East Asia and Southeast Asia with South Asia, Persia, the Arabian Peninsula, East Africa and Southern Europe through road constructions, seaport development, railways etc. in central Asia countries, Pakistan, Iran and even Europe (read about it)

If Nigeria were to get her acts right we should be reviving the ancient trans-Sahara trate routes strategically building influence in the countries that currently occupy those routes (Timbuktu, Agades, Tripoli etc) non of these North African countries or middle eastern countries would have "nothing on us". But we are to busy fighting ourselves to see the potential in ourselves
Punch is not being sensational. Rather, they are discerning. If you think Niger will leave Benin Republic ports which are far more efficient than Nigerian ports just because we built a rail then you must have another one coming.
Besides, the route from through Benin is shorter than Nigeria for Niger. So there's no benefit for Niger using Nigeria's port except you have a plan to shutdown Benin Republic ports.
Secondly, the trans-saharan trade does not favour Nigeria in any wise. The major proponents are the Arabs and there's nothing historically or presently we have to offer them in terms of trade. We are better served by the trans-atlantic trade.

Stop trying to defend nonsense....if FG want to create an economic bilateral relationship with Niger then the expenses to create the locomotives for such regards should be made bilateral and not put the burden on the unsuspecting citizens of Nigeria.
Do you know how far half of that amount can do to our ailing Medical Sector or Electricity Generation sector? SMH @how you are trying to defend incompetence.

That's not valid in any form unless the Niger FG also shares part of the costs, we citizens are paying taxes unjustly because of some personal sentiments...very lame and useless excuse.

Exactly my grouse with all the hardship and after completing they'll keep looting the proceeds if there'll be any though..because I don't see how Nigeria will gain from such even Benin Republic as industrious as they are gain more from us because of the differentials in population!

A young visionary leader will not be a bigot because good and exemplary leadership looks out for a bigger picture and think out of the box.

We need young visionary leaders.

@Seniorwriter
This is same denial of reality since pre-independence that has put middle-belt and Southerners in their precarious situation today.
You systemically try to downplay the major impact of culture, tradition, religion, education, tribal loyalty and sentiments in effective and competent leadership.

Your president unfortunately doesn't understand Nationalism. He is actually no better than IPOB.

If the borders don't make sense then call for a referendum so borders can be designed on tribe affiliations. IPOB also think the borders dont make sense.

Without nationalism, I am much closer to the Yorubas of Benin republic than to my fellow Nigerians of fulani extraction in Kano.

Do you have railways in Nigeria? You give out when you have enough and have means to control it's effect.

Good enough

For your imaginable standards of 'intelligence', yes.
Providing international infrastructure that is not functional in your country.
Like going abroad to buy an aircraft or a sea going vessel when you donot have an airport or habour.

You will have thought the normal way to development will be to build capacity first.
Waking up from the grave you will think all the commercial and industrial hubs in Nigeria were linked by rail lines and a spur to Niger was to male a stronger web.

But alas, what do I know.
Perhaps the criteria for electing the President will be that he does not come from within 30 miles of any border town so that we can get our resources where it matters most to US NIGERIANS, presently swimming in poverty and destitution.

Eight years of the 'Personalisation' of Government.
This is the result.
We will see the 'wonderful' economic and commercial figures from that glorious enterprise over the next decade.

The West African map

See the crevice between Nigeria and Benin. And remember that the oil is not at the border between Niger and Benin.

Between Nigeria and Benin, who takes goods to every part of Niger? And it is passing through all the way to Lagos.

This is ordinary economics o.

The oil in Nigeria is in Agadem (the part I cycled blue), not at the border between Benin and Niger. And we all know that the shortest distance between two points is always a straight line (mathematics).

Most people talking don't even know the detail. Amaechi has been saying this thing everyday, but people have made up their minds on what they want to hear.

Please study this thing, and forget the political noise for 2023. This is reality.
