The U.S. Department of State condemned Nigeria's Twitter ban and its threat to arrest and prosecute Nigerians found using the app in a statement Thursday, saying the policy "has no place in a democracy."

Why it matters: The department requested that Nigeria's government respect its citizens’ right to freedom of expression and reverse the ban on the social media platform, which has been extremely popular in Africa's most populous nation.

Context: The country banned the platform after Twitter temporarily froze Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari's account for violating its "abusive behavior" policy.

Nigeria's attorney general and minister of justice also directed the country's communications regulator and federal prosecutors over the weekend to start charging and arresting people who circumvent the ban through virtual private networks.

Twitter and other platforms are routinely used by citizens around the world to voice their dissent or concerns to their governments.

What they're saying: "Unduly restricting the ability of Nigerians to report, gather, and disseminate opinions and information has no place in a democracy," Ned Price, a spokesperson for the State Department, said.

"Freedom of expression and access to information both online and offline are foundational to prosperous and secure democratic societies," he added.

"We support Nigeria as it works towards unity, peace, and prosperity. As its partner, we call on the government to respect its citizens’ right to freedom of expression by reversing this suspension."

Two-faced nonsense. There NOT banning Twitter there SUSPENDING it. Primarly becuase of Twitters rampant promotion of fake news & mass misinformation campaigning. Especially regarding Nigeria last year where they where literally mass spreading completely made up situations(fake news), half thruths & exaggerated events. The Cov1d situation, the protest, LGBT, vaccinations etc. The fact Twitter's upper management supported that nonsense was the final straw. Africans always talk about taking control of there image from foriegners that don't have there best interest at heart well there ya go. I support this decision at least for now.

It seems, you are trying to defend and justify buhari's decision at all costs. There is always going to be a positif for any decision, indeed people are still arguing today that hitler's policies reduced joblessness to 0% and made transportation fluid.

The fact still remains that buhari is a biggot who just used southsouth money to bring his niger republic brothers closer and buhari made the confession. Devide Nigeria now !

Research about the volume of commerce in the kano-kastina-maradi corridor, there are papers dating back to 2005 on the topic.
South-South money?! Nigeria isn't paying a single naira for that project. Educate yourself and stop making fun of your supposed education on public spaces.

The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), has defended his decision to construct railways and roads extending into Niger Republic.

Buhari said this during an interview on Arise Television which aired on Thursday.

The President said borders were arbitrarily drawn by the French colonialists without taking into cognisance the cultural similarities of the people of Niger and Nigeria even as he revealed that he has first cousins in Niger Republic.

The problem is Nigerian constitution didn't say freedom of speech should be on Twitter. A social media not paying tax to you, not regulated by your laws and promoting fake News and violence.

Come to think of it, who denied the other freedom of speech? Our president was denied freedom of speech and Nnamdi Kanu and other terrorist organizations are free to talk.

Twitter and US are crazy. They should continue paying tax to Ghana as it's more important to them.

The only thing this trainline to niger republic will bring to nigeria is an influx of impoverished buhari's brothers from the sahel.

There is a reason why countries don't make access to their lands easier for poorer and less secured countries. You build a bridge to a country with a sound economy, not a country with no economy, just because "they are your brothers".
This is total nonsense.

All you guys who keep defending buhari's actions, I hope you know this will only lead to war ?

It is very simple: what do you want ?
If you actually want nigeria to continue its existence, then you need to stop being buhari apologists and denounce his actions. Your ethnocentrism will only lead to a breakup of nigeria.

Army Chief's Appointment: Nigeria To Spend N700million To Force 29 Generals Out Amid Recession

The Nigerian Army will be spending not less than N700 million on the retirement of 29 Major-Generals and Brigadier-Generals who will leave the service going by the appointment of Major-General Farouk Yahaya as the Chief of Army Staff.

SaharaReporters learnt that the 29 Generals’ retirement benefits would gulp a large chunk of the money, according to the 2017 Harmonised Terms and Conditions of Service of the Officers and men of the Armed Forces.

Checks by SaharaReporters showed that the 29 Major-Generals are entitled to a brand new Peugeot 508 car, one cook, two residential guards, one service orderly and one service driver.

Chief among the benefits is free medical cover in Nigeria and abroad to the tune of $15,000 annually.

The 29 Major-Generals and Brigadier-Generals have already commenced a terminal leave – the prelude to their retirement – which will end on June 30.

“The brand new vehicles for the exiting generals will cost N464 million while the other logistics and employment of personnel for them will cost N200 million in total. The money will come from extra-budgetary allocations to the armed forces,” a source at the Defence Headquarters, Abuja.

“Some of them are lobbying but the rule is the rule. Generals in Course 36 have to be retired forcefully, since Major-General Yahaya is of the 37th Regular Course.”

SaharaReporters had on May 28 reported that President Muhammadu Buhari bypassed no fewer than 24 top senior Nigerian Army officers to appoint Yahaya as the Chief of the Army Staff, according to a document, Seniority Roll Nigerian Army Officers 2021 (Revised) obtained by SaharaReporters.

SaharaReporters had stated that the President, by appointing Yahaya, hitherto the Theatre Commander of Operation Hadin Kai in the North-East and from Regular Course 37, puts the 24 top army officers from Regular Courses 35 and 36, on the path of forceful retirement.

Military sources had said Buhari might have appointed a less qualified Yahaya, from Sokoto State, based on the president’s usual ethnic and religious sentiments as seen in his other various appointments.

Checks by SaharaReporters on the army’s document showed that most of the officers in line of seniority following the late Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Ibrahim Attahiru, are from the South-West, South-East or Christians.

Following Attahiru are; “Maj Generals J.O Olawumi from Ekiti, J.O Akomolafe from Kwara, C.O. Ude from Enugu, J. Oyefesobi from Ogun, M.O Uzoh from Abia, C.C. Okonkwo from Imo, M.S.A Aliyu from Zamfara, U.M Muhammed from Niger and B.M Shafa from Ogun.”

Others are; “N.E. Angbazo from Nasarawa, Y.P. Auta from Kebbi, A.S. Maikobi from Bauchi, B. Ahanotu from Anambra, S.A. Yaro from Bauchi, J. Sarham from Kano, H.E. Ayamasaowei from Bayelsa, O.F. Azinta from Enugu, B.A Akinroluyo from Ondo, KAY Isiyaku from Niger, AT Haman from Borno, A.M. Aliyu from Gombe, H. P. Z. Vintekaba from Taraba, K.O. The Kadiri from Lagos, and IM Yusuf from Yobe.”

The new army chief, Yahaya, now 55 years, was commissioned into the Nigerian Army Infantry Corps on September 22, 1990.

When Buhari appointed the present crop of service chiefs only in January, no fewer than 20 generals from the three services who were members of courses 34 and 35 were retired to pave way for them.

http://saharareporters.com/2021/06/08/army-chiefs-appointment-nigeria-spend-n700million-force-29-generals-out-amid-recession

Just read the venom of bigotry oozing out from a media personality, Sowore is really sick, Yahaya will be decorated with Lt General rank, why do we need to retire Major Generals?

The legality or illegality will be determined by a court as there is currently no law very explicit about this particular case and there is no past case that can be used as an example. There are parts of the constitution and clauses that can be used to argue for and against it.

Mind you, this is just my own opinion, someone else with vast knowledge of law will be able to provide facts.

Well there's your president. Make your judgment. He might appear upright but I see nothing new going to happen in the remaining two years of his presidency something I've said six months into his administration when I since abandoned ship. And I've not being proven wrong. Was it former President Obasanjo who said to be a successful president you need to be more than just a good person. And he proved it.

President Buhari won't change. Forget it.

Credit to him the money for weapons and for some new infrastructure was not stolen. The country is where we are because GEJ and the PDP stole unprecedented amounts of money.
