The Chief of Defence Staff, General Lucky Irabor, on Thursday met with major-generals, Air vice Marshals and the rear admirals who are members of the Regular Course 36 and senior to the new Chief of Army Staff, Major General Farouk Yahaya.

The meeting was convened with a view to tactically easing out no fewer than 70 major generals, AVMs and rear admirals out of the service, The PUNCH can authoritatively report.

The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), had skipped 29 major-generals and appointed Yahaya who is a member of Regular Course 37, a move which has been generating controversy in the last two weeks.

Irabor subsequently asked members of Course 36 to proceed on courses of their choice and to no longer report at their duty posts.

The Thursday meeting was sequel to a letter marked DH/ABJ/401/38/ADM dated June 4, 2021 which was marked ‘restricted’ but was obtained by our correspondent.

The letter was signed by Rear Admiral AB Adamu on behalf of the CDS.

It read in part, “Ref A (NOTAL) under the cover of Ref B (NOTAL) approved the commencement of annual leave in respect of Maj Gen JB Olawunmi (N/8795) and 28 others who are members of 36RC in the NA. The snr offrs (senior officers) were to proceed on the annual leave wef 1-30 June. However, I am directed to invite all serving members of 36 RC in the AFN (Maj Gen and equivalent) to a meeting with the CDS as follows. Thursday, June 10, 21; DHQ Conference Hall; 11.00hrs prompt.”

It was learnt that Irabor, based on approval from the Federal Ministry of Defence, asked all the members of regular course 36 across the three services to proceed on courses of their choice for the next one year.

A general, who spoke to our correspondent on the condition of anonymity, said, “Gen Irabor made it clear to everyone that because all course 36 members of the army who are seniors of the current Chief of Army Staff, are being eased out, it would be wrong to retain their course mates in other services.

“To this end, all air vice marshals in the air force and all rear admirals in the navy that are members of Course 36 have been affected. They will not be allowed to continue to report at their respective services or at DHQ. The intention is to get all to resign without forcing them to do so.”

The source said some of the generals would go to the National Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies while others would go to the Administrative Staff College of Nigeria on course.

When asked why the military was taking the action, the general added, “The military now has a tradition whereby when a new chief of any of the branches is appointed, all those who senior him, including those who are in other arms of the military, are eased. This was how members of the Regular Course 35 were all eased out in February.”

Update: Majority of you are telling me to ignore this because previous administrations did it. You have no idea how clownish you sound trying to convince me to part with evil because someone else must have done it. That’s the problem. Party affiliations would blind your conscience from speaking truth. I’m not concerned if anybody has done this before. It is wrong and unnecessary. Do you know how many hundreds of millions the struggling economy would have to cough out to compensate these men? When it could ordinarily have been avoided. Buhari campaigned on integrity. Buhari campaigned on changing the “status quo.” Thrice. Just to come and do the same thing others were doing? Do you see how insensible you sound?

Agree with me or not, this is unfair and underserved retirement for this men. No matter what political views you subscribe to, if you’re being fair and reasonable, you’d see Nigeria is facing terrible security crisis that requires all hands on deck. You cannot be retiring Generals at this point, and you all know why these men are going on retirement. A very flimsy and petty reason. You know who’s behind this.

What would it have cost the President to appoint a competent Chief of Army staff from the regular course 36? Ask yourself again. And then you argue that it is to his discretion. But when a person’s choice—when their discretion is causing so much vile and resentment, and public outcry, does it not show something is inherently wrong with the person and inadvertently their ability to make choices?
Currently, I’m yet to see people who trusts the President’s good judgement. If you do, notify me, let me tell you where you belong.

He made a claim on AriseTv, that he only appoints people who he knows. But is the seat of Governance a family reunion? You don’t have to know these individuals. There’s a public service commission. There are individuals responsible for suggesting appointments to you. Appointments generally should be for the betterment of the people. Not to satisfy your familiarity or ethnocentric tendencies.

Do you know by implication, he’s saying all those men do not level up to the substance of the newly appointed vaunted Farouk Yahaya? That’s an insult to men who are older in the force, who worked and served their asses off to a country that does not rate them. Nigeria is sending them off to compulsory retirement simply because of what? The Nigerian “Presidency” is playing with matters of great national security. These appointments are bedevilling.

When the Northerners were getting actively recruited in the military, the Southerners believed that school/education is the way to go, but in reality anything military/defense is a priority and comes first before any other sector regardless of the circumstance. This is one of the effects playing out.

In fairness to Buhari, he made a point that those retired in favor of the new CoAS doesn't have the field experience to manage the troops which is perfectly logical. Theory stays in the head, practical brings experience.

And from yesterday's interview, I saw a man who knows what the country's problem is and how to tackle it but his dementia or whatever sickness he has is seriously letting him down and being taken advantage of ruthlessly by his handlers. He might not be as articulate as we expect a president to be which makes most of his words taken out of context, but a neutral mind will get his points.

The blame should go round and much of it should go to his aides/handlers who I believe constantly lie to the president about the current situation and the citizens who doesn't have the minds of their own. A leader who shouldn't be there the second time is the result.

Let's stop being emotional and see things objectively as they are.

Felixtuta:
Why will a sitting President, a retired soldier skip senior officers only to appoint their junior as Chief of Army Staff?

Our President is indeed our problem. angry and now he wants to retire them forcefully? How do he wants them to feel?

Even with their experiences and years of service, they are treated this way?

No one is safe in this country.

Although it is unfair to retire people forcefully so as to appoint a junior. This has been an extant military tradition in Nigeria. I hope you said same when other Generals were retired forcefully under the the last administration to appoint Azubuike as Chief Of Army Staff?

Afolabimills:
One day soon all this nonsense from this evil tribalistic jihadist hypocrites govt shall come to an end

Some of you folks are just being hypocritical. You call this Government a “Jihadist” Government. Meanwhile, this same “Jihadist Government” appointed Leo Irhabor, a Christian Southerner to become the Chief of Defence Staff. I hope you're aware that this position is the highest in the military? Under Goodluck Jonathan, a “non-Jihadist”, no single Muslim Northerner served as Chief of Army Staff or Chief of Defence Staff. Meanwhile, this “Jihadist” fairly appointed two Northerners and two Southerners as service chiefs.

Just like that, an appointment of one individual to a position of authority will cause over 70 others to be retired prematurely. Is that how they do in other military services in other countries?
