tegrianonigltd:Btw, pretty much same with Lee’s Singapore (perhaps to a slightly lesser degree). Lee was often quite criticized in the West and internationally for his brutal methods, including forcibly relocating and demolishing poor and rundown neighborhoods and dislocating indigenous residents from their ancestral homes and even burial grounds. Growing up as a kid in the US, I distinctly recall an infamous case of a young American student visiting Singapore who was publicly flogged for a minor environmental infringement. In fact, people used to be publicly flogged and fined for what may seem to the rest of us as “minor” offenses such as disposing of chewing gum and spitting in public places. In contrast, then military ruler Maj-Gen Buhari’s War Against Indiscipline (“WAI”), from before many of us on Nairaland were even born, that subjected people to things like frog-jumps (and I think the occasional koboko whip) for public indiscipline, is still being referred to till the present-day as the “infamous WAI” and generally condemned as barbaric. Prince001:There’s NOWHERE in the world that all roads requiring rehabilitation/rebuilding are fixed in ONE month… Lagos has over 3000 roads, its terrain is mostly swampy, and it’s a developing economy with limited resources…. It spends reportedly spends over 60% of its capital budget on road transportation (and there’s still healthcare, education, security, etc.). Btw, LASG projects has signage THANKING taxpayers for making it possible… Nonetheless, there is absolutely NOTHING wrong with Positive Reinforcement! Even employers will pay bonuses and give awards to employees for good work - even though they are being paid salaries for it. Even Obama or Biden (in fact, ANY AND ALL political leaders) get praised for good jobs - even though that’s what they were elected to do! > |

Prince001:And I was born and raised in the world’s richest and most advanced nation, until I fell in love with Nigeria… The US relies entirely on the taxes paid by its citizens (although it is also the world’s BIGGEST debtor nation). Meanwhile, most Nigerians outside of the civil service and PAYE withholding do NOT pay taxes and LASG THANKS those who do… It’s called PERSPECTIVE and we have to compare like with like. Lagos is DEVELOPING economy and basic infrastructure is CRUCIAL for us. PS: Btw, Biden was praised for signing the Juneteenth public holiday bill - that’s hardly “crucial”! ![]() > |

tegrianonigltd:What are you going on about? ![]() You seem to completely miss the point. 36 years later, Nigerians are still moaning about how KAI used to make people frog-jump on the streets for indisciplined behavior, but Lee’s government used to publicly flog and fine Singaporean citizens and residents for even lesser offenses. The point is if you want to be like Singapore then you have to do what Singaporeans did, including not only behaving as well-disciplined Singaporeans do accepting without complaint governmental actions and impositions (including demolitions and public whippings). Nigerians cannot derive the benefits of Singapore without the sacrifices of Singaporeans. APPLES AND AGBALUMO! > |

tegrianonigltd:I don’t really pay much attention to these sorts of “parachute” rankings… ![]() Without seeking to compare Apples with Agbalumo myself, I was born and raised in New York City and it was as stressful a city as any. In fact, it used to be said that one of the things New Yorkers enjoyed the most about NYC is COMPLAINING about it, and we would miss it whenever we left the City ( ). I was in Chicago over this past weekend and there were 45 shootings over just a 24-hour period. There were over 55,000 gun-related deaths in the US last year, more than deaths from Boko Haram and banditry in Nigeria over same period. So, let’s try to have proper PERSPECTIVE, Lagos is a DEVELOPING economy, and accordingly most of the complaints and “stresses” of the city are bound to be alleviated if the government continues to do the things it is doing (including building, rehabilitating and/or expanding roads). For example, when the (admittedly interminable) Light Rail becomes operational and more waterway routes are developed, it will greatly relieve the “stress” of traffic listed in the rankings. Development is a PROCESS and not an event! > |

9jaRealist:You didn’t grow in Lagos, then. You will love. New York City stress, developing since when , when Lagos, Nigeria was the big brother even dubai, China looked up to in the 70s and 80s, so what should be developing in 2021, even as the 4th largest economy in Africa as at now with its population and mass wealth, you still call Lagos developing economy, funny you, do you know Saudi king and family used IBADAN TEaching hospitalIn the 80s as their hospital?, now our big men fly there, how pathetic grace to grace, when Nigeria airways was the wave of the moment, Uae had none, China was still gasping for breath, Brazil was crawling, Nigeria was the envy, Question is this greedy bastards, you can’t compare New York stress to Lagos street, you haven’t been to whole of Lagos, I have waka all The loops , I have been to New York also, Lagos is a mess, really mess.. |

tegrianonigltd:Quit comparing Apples with Agbalumo… New York City is a couple of hundred years old and had tax revenues of over $82 billion in 2020 (despite the pandemic). That means that NYC has more revenues coming into its treasury than ALL OF NIGERIA’s revenue (Nigeria only collected $32.6 billion from oil revenues - that is $50 billion less than NYC collects just from taxes). Thus, yet again, getting Nigerians to fully and timely pay their due taxes cannot be overemphasized. So many Nigerians have this weird notion of rights-only citizenship, but the reality is that rights and responsibilities are inextricably intertwined. I still pay US taxes from here in Nigeria, because the US levy taxes on WORLDWIDE income. PERSPECTIVE is always necessary for meaningful discourse. Just NYC’s Metro Transit Agency has a budget of $17 billion, compared to the entire Lagos State budget of about $2 billion, and yet we still moan about transit problems and bottlenecks in NYC but you expect Lagos to fix all of it 3000-plus roads in one month and still take care of security, healthcare, public education (where the 1.6 million pupils in Lagos’ primary and secondary schools is much more than the 1 million in NYC’s public schools - the BIGGEST school district in the US), etc. > |

tegrianonigltd:Btw, I can assure you NOBODY in Brazil or China was “envious” of 1980s Nigeria… Growing up in the US and UK, Nigeria was viewed as an UNDERDEVELOPED (and developing) nation. A lot of the misleading nostalgia from Nigerians about the Nigeria of a bygone era (some Nigerians even call for the return of colonial rule) is, with all due respect, largely based on IGNORANCE (as the saying goes, ignorance is bliss), which has now been largely shed with the advent of globalization, the Internet, social media and an interconnected world where events thousands of miles away are “viewed” simultaneously in real-time across the globe. Nigeria of the 1980s (and I would guess 1970s) was a relatively poor DEVELOPING nation with more breweries than universities, and which on the back of booming oil revenues which Nigerians themselves had nothing to do with (with production by foreign oil companies and prices determined by OPEC’s actions) IMPORTED virtually everything, from canned beer to hair pins! That was always going to be UNSUSTAINABLE, and not real “development”. It was the veneer without the substance. For some perspective, Nigeria was the world’s SECOND-LARGEST importer of cement in the 1970s and 1980s (and beyond), second only to US, costing billions of dollars in foreign currency reserves. Today, thanks largely to Nigerian companies like BUA Cement and Dangote Cement, Nigeria is not only self-sufficient in cement but an EXPORTER of cement, saving the nation BILLIONS in scarce foreign currency reserves but also earning foreign currency from exports and creating TENS OF THOUSANDS OF JOBS IN NIGERIA FOR NIGERIANS! That’s real progress and the sort of direction Nigeria should be focused on, instead of importing everything and thinking you live in a “better” country that others are envious of. Even in oil production, Nigerian companies are presently reportedly responsible for about 30% of Nigeria’s oil production from ZERO percent in the 1970s/80s. So in many ways today’s Nigeria is MORE DEVELOPED than in the 1970s/80s. Meanwhile, for further PERSPECTIVE, the Saudi Arabia that you cite produces over 11 million barrels of oil daily (and that’s even after it’s cut its production from over 13 million barrels to firm up prices) for a population of about 30 million people, while Nigeria produces less than 2 million barrels daily (when Niger Delta militants are not blowing up pipelines) for an estimated population of over 200 million people. Dubai has an indigenous population of only about 400,000 Emirati, and thus has been built, managed and run virtually by foreigners (and of course constructed by foreign SLAVE LABOUR). These nations not only simply have tons more wealth and resources than Nigeria, they also are ONE ethnicity (Arabs) and thus do not have to wrestle with the bickering of Nigeria’s 200-plus diverse ethnicities which often detracts from real development (with things like quota systems, federal character, creation of unviable states, etc.). Nonetheless, signing more and bigger checks is not necessarily an indicia of ‘better’ (or more enlightened) leadership or development. APPLES AND AGBALUMO! > |

9jaRealist:I repeat Lagos is the 4th or 5th largest economy in Africa, the pride of Africa in the 70s, 80s the big brother even to the Southern Africa which was troubled, Brazil was developing when Nigeria was fast developing, uae and co studied Nigeria development as at then, go look and read history thoroughly not just mere sentiment, Nigeria natural resources is enough for 1 billion people, Dubai DONT have natural resources, just tourism, AND ABU DHABI IS THE ONE WITH THE OIL , and 80% of landmass, Malaysia don’t have half of what we got, even China focus on their population and using it to their advantage, I went there and saw little TECH boys in Tongji, ALL WE DEY ARGUE HERE IS THE LEADERS ARE USELESS, TINUBU, ATIKU, BUHARI, ETC ALL OF THEM, visionless With our coal, mineral resources, limestone, palm kernel, etc, 53 out of 58 we got it, Nigeria is a mess, elderly ones who have struggle to train their kids have to depend on their struggling kids to feed in return, no payment from government, my kids can go to school here in the uK for free from 4, they don’t have what we even have, blessed country Nigeria, with useless leaders and people who support this hooligans |

tegrianonigltd:Citizens fully and timely pay their taxes in the UK… ![]() Nonetheless, public elementary and secondary schools are FREE in Lagos, even with much less resources. Meanwhile, for PERSPECTIVE, the UK’s education budget was $70 billion last year… That’s about TWICE all of Nigeria’s ENTIRE earnings from oil (and 35x Lagos’ entire $2 billion budget)! tegrianonigltd:And just for the record (although it wasn’t really the point)… Dubai was developed with oil money by the late Sheikh Al-Maktoum. See it from Dubai’s own OFFICIAL history… https://www.visitdubai.com/en/articles/history-of-dubai To its credit, it had built upon that development with tourism… But it’s mostly been “checkbook development” designed, executed and managed largely by foreigners! > |

9jaRealist:The boom of present day Dubai (1966 to present) With the discovery of oil, the late Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum began the development of Dubai. He began transforming the city from a small cluster of settlements near Dubai Creek to a modern port, city and commercial hub. Rashid Port, Jebel Ali Port, Dubai Drydocks, the widening of the Dubai Creek, and the Dubai World Trade Centre were few of the major projects completed at the time. Leadership and vision allowed the UAE to push ahead with ambitious building and social projects. In the space of just half a century, Dubai exploded in growth, building modern wonders such as the Burj Al Arab and Burj Khalifa, which are now very closely associated with the metropolis. As part of the city's efforts to consistently expand, explore innovation and create opportunities, Dubai continues to plan landmark projects to attract tourists and business alike. Taken from the website, my point na vision of this bastard leaders, these hoodlums, these fools in power seeking additional 700 billion naira plus for security after so many trillions fighting insecurity, the blood suckers, those parasites , those antelopes in human form, those craze men like Tinubu and co ruining the future of the nation, making Nigeria handicap, even Ghana can go Southy, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Jamaica etc visa free, who rate that passport. Omo I no follow you argue this visionless men again, 22 years under a vision and practical man would see Lagos a top spot, a vision man with practical doings would see Nigeria envy of Africa. These men no get vision, these men no animals, you the supporters same too. Buhari and him support, atiku, Jonathan, babangida, all men who have sat at the corridors of power and ruin that country, plus you the supporters giving me link, with 22 years of Tinubu, and Lagos economy, Lagos would be so beautiful, but na lie, smelling Lagos |

tegrianonigltd:Vision is one thing, but LOTS OF MONEY is what actually allowed Dubai to push ahead… And yet even their “leadership and vision” still relies on Oyinbo to plan, design, execute, manage and operate their projects! Meanwhile, if you think that “visa-free” status is the goal of development, then we never had anything to discuss in the first instance… Development is a PROCESS, not an event. And perfection shouldn’t be the enemy of doing better. Doing better deserves acknowledgment. EKO O NI BAJE! ![]() > |

Making Nigerians travel by road to Libya to cross to Europe, every body wan run, pathetic, in the 70s and 80s, Nigerians went abroad and came back now they go and never return, average Nigerian youth ask them, them wan japa, something is wrong they don’t know, see if any better country pack ship say make Nigerians enter within 24 hours, some go die for stampede I swear, it would be massive.
