Donald Rumsfeld Dead At 88 by olatade(op): 8:43pm On Jun 30, 2021

Donald Rumsfeld, former congressman and US defense secretary best known for his role in advocating the 2003 invasion of Iraq, has passed away just short of his 89th birthday, according to his spokesman.

Rumsfeld died on Wednesday, surrounded by relatives in Taos, New Mexico.

“History may remember him for his extraordinary accomplishments over six decades of public service, but for those who knew him best and whose lives were forever changed as a result, we will remember his unwavering love for his wife Joyce, his family and friends, and the integrity he brought to a life dedicated to country,” his family said in a statement.

Former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger – himself a notorious foreign policy hawk – once described Rumsfeld as “the most ruthless man” he knew and “a skilled full-time politician-bureaucrat in whom ambition, ability and substance fuse seamlessly.”

For the record, I did not like Saddam Hussein, or the Taliban, but the US should not have invaded Iraq or Afghanistan.

If they wanted to take out UBL, they should have done it codedly. But they did not, and an unecessary war was fought.

If anything, the wars proved that change in a nation can only come from within, not from outside. Japan and South Korea were autocratic nations, today they are democratic. Yes, the US may have intervened, but the people were very willing to change.(us DID naught about SK's oppressive military era.)

One thing I like about Trump...and I find trump distasteful...was his constant questioning of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. In public and in private, Trump has always been asking why the US has been in both countries? Indeed what is the US doing in Afghanistan and Iraq?

Rumsfeld's passing is the end of an era...sort of.
