Itsekiris and the Binis had Igbo slaves for centuries before British colonialism.

After the British banned slavery, we were forced to set them free. Some of them returned to Igbo land, others remained with us and gradually formed a new language called ******* (an Itsekiri word which we used to call them while they were our slaves). There are about 200,000 ******* still with us.

(I will not reveal the name of this tribe called *******, because I do not want to offend them, but they are in Delta state)
If they speak, an Igbo person will understand some of what they say, while Itsekiris, Binis and even European Portuguese people will understand them too.

Those of them who chose to return to Igbo land have Igbo names that sound like Itsekiri or Benin names, for example Iweka, and many names beginning with Oba or Iken.
That is how some of our names and also Benin names went into the Igbo lexicon.

We have century old carvings in Ode Itsekiri and Benin depicting Igbo slaves, which we sold to the Portuguese via our ancient pre colonial port called Ogidigben. The grandfather of the present Oba of Benin showed some of these carvings to the world famous British anthropologist, Sir David Attenborough in 1973. The video is on YouTube. When you see the carving, even you will have no doubt that the person is Igbo.

Because of the sheer number of Igbo slaves we sold at Ogidigben, the Portuguese named the town Escravos, which means slave in Portuguese. Till today, many people still call Ogidigben Escravos.

We also sold slaves in another town called Burutu, which the Portuguese renamed Forcados (meaning forced labourer, which is a nicer way of saying slaves).

Obviously, I am not too proud of this history. I wish it never happened. History is not always pleasant. I am only revealing it to you because you are getting the wrong idea of linkages between our two peoples.

We all have a history. Blacks were originally foods for the whites to feast on; sell, use and discard as common items. It does not define us even though it is a part of our history.

The idea that Igbos of old were taken as slaves by the Old Bini Kingdom does not change or mean anything. The Old Bini was formidable and vast. It does not necessarily make them cowards.

Goodness, what is it with mushroom tribes and trying to falsify history? huh

Mushroom tribes never had the guts to enslave the great Igbo race.

The times of war and strife in Igbo countries allowed Igbo merchants to sell other Igbos to foreigners. This is why as far down Igboland, some Igbos had hausa slaves. Not that they invaded hausaland.

It took decades for Europeans with sophisticated weapons to technically 'defeat' the Igbos. Mushrooms trying to do the same would have been wiped out from history.
Mouth action.
The carvings of your slavish ancestors still dey Benin grin

THE FACT THAT IGBO FEATURED MAJORLY IN THE TRANSATLANTIC SLAVE TRADE WAS DOWN TO THE OBA OF BINI AND OBONG OF CALABAR.

THEY REGULARLY CONDUCTED SLAVE RAIDS INTO NEARBY IGBO VILLAGES.

THE OBONG OF CALABAR AND OBA OF BINI ACTED AS MIDDLE MEN FOR THE EUROPEAN SLAVE TRADERS.

I HOPE RENO KNOWS THE ACTION OF ITSEKIRI AND BINI DURING THIS PERIOD WAS SHAMEFUL AND NOTHING TO BE PROUD ABOUT

This explains why the SE is overcrowded. The Ijaws , Bini and Efik used the place like a huge slave farm/poultry for slaves.

When the slave trade ended abruptly there was aglut of slaves much more tan their land could carry
Re: How The Binis Enslaved Igbo People For Centuries - Reno Omokri (VIDEO) by chrisxxx(m): 10:56am On Jul 22, 2021
This could be true. In Ikwerre land we had a lot of Igbo slaves. They were called Owhu. (Slaves) This is not to say we conquered the Igbos, they were bought since they would be carried across Ikwerre land on their way to the Atlantic,
The strong men among them would be brought off by well to do Ikwerre men and other tribes along the coast line.

I agree it's nice to study history, but right now every southerners focus should be on the present. Simply put 2023 will be the most important election in our lifetime. The Fulani are not going to give up power easily. Buhari will either try and engineer a third term or hand pick another Fulani as his successor. The south needs UNITY now more than ever to confront the challenge ahead. Let's leave the past in the past and focus on securing a brighter future for our children.

WHEN THE SLAVE TRADE ENDED, ALOT OF IGBOS BOUND FOR THE AMERICAS, WERE LEFT ON THE ISLAND OF BONNY AND OPOBO.

MANY OF THEM TODAY, IDENTIFY AS KALABARI WHICH WAS DERIVED FROM NEW CALABAR.

THE AREA WAS PART OF THE CALABAR SLAVE TRADE CONDUCTED BY THE EFIK AND AROCHUKWU, WHO ARE MIXED IGBO AND EFIK.

Weak ancestors who could not fight to secure the land for their future descendants. No wonder they always seek validation/support from other tribes before they do something. The inferiority complex is a generational one from slavery.
Just the way Africans feel inferior to whites for conquering their lands.
