Coming to work 24.7 does not assure productivity. A lot of companies (particularly multinationals) are now adopting the "work from home" concept.

Using myself as an example, I only go to the office on Mondays and the days I go to the office are the days I am least productive. Cos whenever I'm working from home, I start working before 8am and stop working like 6pm since I'm not concerned about how I'm going to beat the Lagos traffic.

Nigerian employees should become more flexible. At the end of the day, result is what matters. Just put in place key performance indicators and mechanisms to monitor your employees performance

Very simple.

Use a clocking device that workers are supposed to thumbprint when they get to work.

At the end of the month, any worker that is absent is deducted more than they would have earned for that day if they were punctual.

That is how my organisation does it.

I read through all the points and as an employer, I can tell you that number 3 is the only point that works for Nigerians. I had a staff that started work and in two days, she took a permission to attend a birthday..yes you heard me. I thought maybe the birthday was very important and I let it slide...but before the next 30 days, this lady has missed work for 5 days with silly excuses.

So for her 2nd month, I told her I can only continue with her if she will sign an undertaking that will permit me to deduct 3k from her salary for each day she didn't come to work...

She accepted and signed the undertaking...believe me, she didn't miss work again till we parted ways.

The most proven factor discouraging absenteeism is only when time sheet/attendance serves as a basis for the payment of workers salaries and wages.

This does not work for all job functions
