We are a bit like India in this regard...we have one popular sport that everyone wants to be associated with and everyone is interested in......meaning that most of the government and private sponsorship goes there.

When a private sports secondary school was set up in Kwara over ten years ago...of the first intake of 116 students , 115 opted to specialize in football.

It is not really anyone's fault. Football offers a quick route for most from poverty to riches. Other sports are not like that. Basketball in particular...it is harder to get into the NBA for a young Nigerian than it is to get into a lucrative European league.

Game Management is a problem for us.
Look at the 3rd Q...... Nwora (though our best in this game), could have allowed the time run out...but lost a 3-pointer, on the rebound, they tied with theirs.

We have a restricted number of talent. 1.Friendly matches are not matches where you bring your A game. Everyone is playing to avoid getting hurt before the big tournament.

2. Plus, coach is probably giving opportunities to the weaker and inexperienced players on the side to get some game time and game experience

Nigeria's soccer dream team 1 in 1996 played a 1-1 draw with a Nigerian local team before winning gold at the Atlanta games later that year. They were very dry in that match. Take both reasons above into consideration, and you will see why.

Everyone wants to play football.(One of our old top track athletes had to be talked into taking up track , because na football him like pass when he was young).

Once there is lack of interest, then there is lack of sponsorship and lack of government funding. (Private companies prefer to back a winning horse, plus governments prefer to fund sports that have a chance of winning something..yes, and that includes developed governments.)
